This is a backpacking guide for hiking the island of Madeira, Portugal in 8-10 days. The island, located 1000 kilometers from Portugal in the Atlantic ocean, is often referred to as the Hawaii of Europe with its rough interior mountains and steep cliffs. The route includes all the highlights of the island including all it's types of flora: from the wet coastal forests in the north, the magical Fanal forest up the plateau, some of the tallest waterfalls, the tallest peaks and the rough coastal cliffs. The hike passes through dense rain forests, across the arid peaks and through several tunnels of the island famous water canals (levadas). For my boyfriend and I, the budget for flight tickets is a maximum of 250€ for two people (only in Europe). In general, we pay less than 150€. For hotels, it is less than 100€/night. Two years ago, when we were students, the hotel budget was about 90€/night maximum. In a few words, travelling isn't impossible for a low budget. Highlights: 🚋 Trams - The Lisbon tramway network is a system of trams in operation since 1873; it presently comprises six lines and has a length of 31 km with 63 trams in operation (45 historic "Remodelados", 8 historic "Ligeiros" and 10 modern articulated trams). Tram 28 is famous because happens to go past many of the city's most significant landmarks in districts like Alfama, Baixa and Estrela. Because the route also uses some heritage-style tram carriages, it has become a popular tourist attraction in the city. 💠 Azulejos - is a form of Spanish and Portuguese painted tin-glazed ceramic tilework. Azulejos happen to be one of the most distinctive art forms in Portugal and are found on the interior and exterior of churches, palaces, ordinary houses, schools, and nowadays, restaurants, bars and even railways or subway stations. 🧼 Soaps - Oprah Winfrey said they're one of her favorite things, so the world is now also a fan of Portuguese soaps. But they're not recent products. They've been made since the 1800s and are 100% natural. They've maintained beautiful Art Deco and Art Nouveau packagings from the 1920s, and have become one of the favorite gifts to take from Portugal. 🥮 Pastel de nata - is a Portuguese egg custard tart pastry, optionally dusted with cinnamon - looks like a cross between a custard tart and a cake; created by monks in the Jerónimos Monastery, a major tourist attraction today and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. 🍲You also have to try these traditional dishes: Bifana, Sardines, Caracoletas & Prego na Pao, Alheira de Mirandela, Queijadas. 🧉Ginja - also known as ginjinha. This sour cherry liqueur is a tourist favorite but has sweetened locals’ palates for a long time too. There are establishments in Lisbon entirely dedicated to selling this sweet beverage made with Morello cherries, a variety of spices, and plenty of sugar. Nowadays, ginja is also served in edible chocolate cups. While you may choose among white chocolate, milk chocolate and dark chocolate, dark chocolate does indeed pair beautifully with the super sweet, almost syrupy drink.

This is a mini guide to Sintra, Portugal. I HIGHLY recommend spending a night or even two in Sintra instead of just passing through on a day trip. Sintra, Portugal is a magical place. It is the town where royalty spent their summers, and it shows! The fact that it is just about 45 minutes from Lisbon makes it even better, it is so easily accessible. I have been to Sintra twice and I still haven’t seen it all. The first time I went, it was just a for day trip and just wished I had more time. The second time, we stayed overnight and I still found myself wishing I had more time! I would advise spending a night or even a weekend in Sintra. The town of Sintra itself is charming and easy to walk around and enjoy. During my first time there, I didn’t even get to explore the town because we got off the train, grabbed lunch, and immediately started walking up to the Pena Palace. It was like a tease to only be able to explore a small portion of this gorgeous city, so for my second visit to Sintra, I didn’t make that same mistake. We enjoyed spending our time walking around and checking out all of the pastry shops, little bars, cute stores, and restaurants. We spent 14 days in Portugal and I can tell you that there is no better choice we could have made in our life. Its wild beaches, the cliffs that will take your breath away, its villages populated by medieval houses.. Discovering Portugal by camper or car is an experience that will make you discover your spirit of freedom or above all reach all its wonders, even in the most remote places! But before traveling you need to carefully plan your itinerary and I want to show you mine! Oh Porto 🤍 The brilliant weather, stunning architecture and azulejo tiles, vibrant colours, amazing food, beautiful views…it’s all so good. I just loved this city and can’t wait to visit again soon. Especially for more port and pastel de natas 😍 These are some spots and activities that I'd recommend - and others I ran out of time to try but am so keen to do one day!

We loved Lagos! Lagos felt like the perfect mix of authentic culture and also was touristy enough to keep us very entertained! It was wonderful to be able to walk to so many beaches, and hiking along the coast was one of our favorite things we did during this trip. We loved the food and the kindness of all of the people we met. Even the streets in Lagos were creative and decorative. The great thing about this area is that if you have a car you can access SO MUCH within an hour of Lagos. I will not list anything in this guide that is beyond an hour. MOST things in this guide you can do entirely without a car, but I will list some things in which a car will be required. I will split the guide into two sections.. with and without car. Believe me there is PLENTY to do here either way! This guide will include all of the things we did while in Lagos. It will include our favorite beaches, places to eat, and things to do. It will also include things I would LOVE to do if we had more time in this beautiful town!

That's why I though that, as a local in Lisboa who has explored everything this city has to offer, I can make things easy for someone planning to visit it by creating a single source of information with all that. 86 places split into categories to make navigation and priorization easy: 1. Tascas are the heart of Portuguese cuisine. They’re the lifeblood. They’re the no fuss, local joint, people watching, grandma’s cooking type of place. You can’t leave Portugal without going to at least one tasca for lunch, ok? And I’ve made it easier for you because these are the best: Btw, order a plate of the day. Don’t ask the waiter what’s best on the menu because it’s all good. Maybe the dish will be out of your comfort zone but isn’t that what traveling is all about? * A plate of the day (Prato do dia) usually comes with a main course, dessert, and coffee ** Bring cash with you just in case they don’t take card! Bom apetite!

What is Fado music? 🪕🇵🇹 Fado was born in Lisbon in the 19th century during the urban revival where many people would meet in taverns, cafes, and even brothels (mostly in Bairro Alto or Mouraria) to sing about the ups and downs of life while invoking a sense of longing/nostalgia for a person, place, or moment. Fado has changed throughout the years depending on the location (mostly Lisbon or Coimbra) but it’s traditionally sung by a fadista, accompanied by a Portuguese guitar (which has 6 orders of 2 strings) and a viola. The music still exists today and was nominated by UNESCO as a Intangible Heritage of Humankind in 2011. So, here’s a short of list of where to hear Fado music in Lisbon: Highly recommend RESERVING a table for dinner in advance! Most of the time you have dinner + there’s a wonderful fadista to accompany the meal! Enjoy :)
