Eat, Drink & Be Merry in Porto, Portugal

Eat, Drink & Be Merry in Porto, Portugal

Over the last 2 years, I have spent three and a half months in Porto, Portugal. That's a ton of meals! 😆 I love trying new foods and restaurants, and here are some of my favorite spots in and around the historic center of Porto! Most of these places I've just found in my research over the years, some I've been lucky enough to just stumble on, and others have been suggested to me by the locals I have met along the way. But most importantly, I've actually been to every one of these places personally (some more than once!). I've tried to provide a mix of budget, moderately priced and a few splurge meals. I hope my personal recommendations can help you plan your culinary journey around Porto! What's included in this guide: 🔹9 Coffee/brunch options 🔹19 Lunch/dinner options 🔹3 Dessert options 🔹9 Bar/nightlife/cocktail options 🔹3 Food/drink related activities

Coffee + Brunch

Confeitaria do Bolhão
@adventuresofcricket
A local tour guide told me this was the best place to get a famous pastel de nata, the popular egg custard tart pastry of Portugal. I'm still doing independent "scientific" research to come up with my own favorite, but I have to say this place is definitely in my Top 5! Tip: You can order and eat at the counter, or head straight to the back for table service. Once you are finished, take your ticket to the front register and pay on your way out.

Manteigaria – Fábrica de Pastéis de Nata
@adventuresofcricket
After a LOT of taste tests, I think I've finally decided that Manteigaria makes the best pastel de natas in Portugal. They are the perfect balance of warm and creamy in the middle with a flaky, crispy crust. Pair it with a coffee, or try their hot sipping chocolate. Decadent and rich, but a nice treat!

Lunch/Dinner

Mercado do Bolhão
@adventuresofcricket
This market could be listed as a "sight to see", "entertainment spot" AND a "place to eat and drink!" After being closed for almost 4 years for renovation, it reopened in the summer of 2022 and is more beautiful than ever! In addition to the wine, fish, meat, cheese, bakery and produce stalls, Bolhoa Market now features restaurants and shops on its upper levels. And you never know when you will stumble on some live music or entertainment. It is definitely one of Porto's many fine gems!

Great spot right on the Douro River. On a Saturday or Sunday afternoon, this is a great spot to sit with a glass of wine, sausage and cheese plate and admire the view of the bridge!

Gazela
@adventuresofcricket
If Anthony Bourdain says you have to eat here, then you have to. Right? A beloved spot for hotdogs since 1962, this place is a must for a quick, cheap but delicious bite. There are 2 locations very close to each other, but I am partial to the smaller cervejaria. Spots at the counter are limited but the line moves fast. Enjoy a cachorrinho, served on a crispy baguette with sausage and cheese. It is then topped with spicy oil and sliced into small pieces. The fries are hot and the beer is cold. Don't miss this spot while out & about in Porto!

Pregar
@adventuresofcricket
This is my go to spot for a steak sandwich ("prego"). You can order it with or without egg, and their horseradish mayo with lime is a nice accompaniment! Tip: depending on the time of day/year, it can fill up fast (it's small), but they do take reservations. There have been some days where I've walked right in though.

Il Pizzaiolo
@adventuresofcricket
Located at the base of Clerigos Church and around the corner from Lello bookstore. I would consider this a mid-range priced Italian restaurant with many options and great service. If you are craving a good pizza with quality toppings, this place fits the bill! ⭐️ Tip: Pasta dishes are only available during dinner service, which typically starts around 7:00. ⭐️ Tip: weekends are busy; reservations for dinner encouraged.

Café Santiago
@adventuresofcricket
Cafe Santiago is a popular place to try the famous Francesinha ("little French girl"). This sandwich consists of bread, bologna, sausage, beef steak, ham, cheese, & sunny side up egg, which is then smothered in a gravy-like sauce. It definitely lives up to its nickname, "heart attack on a plate!" ⭐️ Tip: grab a stool at the counter and you will be amazed to see just how many Francesinhas these guys can crank out!

McDonald's
@adventuresofcricket
Yes, McDonald's Imperial made the list, not necessarily for its culinary prowess, but for the historic building it is located in. Known as one of the most beautiful McDondald's in the world, it's worth stepping inside for a peek at it's beautiful stained glass and crystal chandeliers. Plus it's always fun to see different menu options at McDonald's around the world. This one serves soup and beer!

Cantina 32
@adventuresofcricket
Located in the center of it all on Rua das Flores, Cantina 32 does not feel touristy at all. They offer quality Portuguese dishes, mixed with a good variety of meat and seafood options. I feel like this is a great dinner choice for a mixed group of people. Tons of options, and they encourage sharing! The decor and ambiance is really quaint and unique. ⭐️ Tip: They do have one table available for solo travelers! My advice is to get there about 15 minutes before they open and chances are they will seat you. Otherwise, reservations are highly encouraged. ⭐️ Tip: Don't skip the salted banana butter and bread. So different, but delicious!

Chama
@adventuresofcricket
I have been lucky enough to visit CHAMA twice, and they offer one of the most fun & unique dining experiences I've ever had. Think Michelin star quality but at your best friend's kitchen table. The dishes are inventive and fresh, and the staff are so kind and attentive. The menu is chef's choice every night, and I promise you won't be disappointed. And the best part, you'll get a 6 or 7 course meal for less than 40 Euros per person (alcohol not included). ⭐️ Tip: They typically reserve a month or two out, so email them early!

I tried the chips & beans appetizer, shrimp tacos & a Modelo (€20 total) and it made me very happy! 😊 (Good) Mexican food is sometimes hard to find in Portugal, but I’ve found my spot in Porto!

Gelataria Portuense
@adventuresofcricket
Gelataria Portuense is a traditional gelato shop where you can taste gelato produced by one of only two Effe machines in Portugal, the revolutionary machine invented in 1927 by Otello Cattabriga, an ingenious and talented Italian inventor. The owner, Ana, trained in Italy for a year learning how to make gelato, then opened her shop in Porto in 2016. She uses local, seasonal products, and her flavors rotate often. I've been to Italy several times, and dare I say that her gelato is honestly the best I've ever had! ⭐️ Tip: favorite flavors (so far) are pistachio and strawberry cheesecake

Amorino Gelato - Porto Carmelitas
@adventuresofcricket
Amorino is a chain gelato shop found all over Europe, and their flavors and quality is pretty consistent. Known for their unique "rose" shaped gelato cones. ⭐️ Tip: It may seem counterintuitive at first, but when you enter the shop, make sure to queue and pay at the register first. You'll then hand your ticket to the staff behind the gelato counter, where they will prepare your order. ⭐️ Tip: a bonus about Amorino is that you can choose as many different flavors as petals on the flower. They base the price on the selected size, not number of flavors.

Porto is my favorite city in Portugal (and quite possibly my favorite city in Europe). I've spent over 3 months here in the last two years, which has given me the unique opportunity to fully experience all Porto has to offer. But I also know what it's like to only have two or three days to try to see & do it all, and why I have created this guide for you. I've highlighted all the best spots, and added in some local favorites, to help you maximize your time in this incredibly vibrant city! Rather than have a rigid, scheduled checklist of places, I've tried to group locations together that would make sense if walking around the city. If you start the day where I've suggested, you'll have many options along the way from start to finish. Use the map icon to toggle between the guide and the map, or use the directions tab in each location description to link you to directly to Google maps. This guide includes: 🔹Suggested sites and activities for 3 days in Porto, thoughtfully & geographically grouped together to help maximize your time in the city. 🔹A mix of the "typical" spots to see, as well as some less-traveled places to add something different & unique to your experience. 🔹Tips and insights given are from my own personal experiences from spending over 3 months in this amazing city. This is not just a generic laundry list of an itinerary! And obviously you'll take lunch, wine (!!) and dinner breaks along the way. I didn't include restaurant options here, as I have an entire guide on just food! You will definitely want to check it out, so I'll link it below! ⬇️

One man's trash is another man's treasure 💙 Artur Bordalo, also known as Bordalo II (pronounced Bordalo Segundo), was born in 1987 in Lisbon, Portugal. He is famous for using street garbage and discarded materials to create stunning animal sculptures. His underlying message is about excessive consumerism and waste, pollution and all types of endangered species. His works, which can be found all over the world, are referred to as "trash art." This free guide includes: 🔹52 art installations of Bordalo II in & around Portugal, broken down by region 🔹Interactive map with tagged locations (use the map icon below to toggle between the guide and full map) 🔹All but a few are found outdoors (some are in restaurants as noted), and free of charge to view! This is not an exhaustive list by any means, and not all of his pieces are permanent exhibits. But hopefully it will help you keep your eyes open for Bordalo's work while traveling around Portugal. His art pieces are really unique and I hope you enjoy spotting them in the wild as much as I do! ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Hi! I'm Christie, and I actually love to plan and research trips! Over the last 25 years, I have travelled to 30 countries, with a large focus on Europe. Since February 2022, I've spent a total of 15 months slow and solo traveling around Portugal, and would love to share what I've learned along the way. Slow travel has given me the unique opportunity to really get to know a place, immerse myself in the culture of the local community, and experience some off-the-beaten-path adventures! If asked about my travel style, I would consider myself a semi-budget traveler. I LOVE a good deal (and travel hacking with points & miles), but I am more than willing to spend money on a delicious meal or an unforgettable experience. I am a big fan of the "loose itinerary." I appreciate experiencing the top things to do in a city, but I have found that the ability to stay open-minded and flexible can often lead to some of the most memorable travel experiences! So if you are feeling overwhelmed with planning and research and details, you are in the right spot! Let my experience help you take the guesswork out of travel planning and let's design the trip of your dreams! Happy travels!
