💥 10 tips to save money for my travels:

1. Cancel all useless subscriptions. How many do we have running ourselves that you actually hardly ever use. Subscriptions like Netflix can easily be shared so that the price is also reduced.

2. People who take public transportation often stop for a coffee along the way (guilty!). Now if you fill up your thermos from home you will again save extra costs on this one. A coffee easily costs 4€, multiply this by 5 days a week and 48 weeks in a year (taking into account 20 days of vacation) and you quickly have a plane ticket to the other side of the world. I admit that while a Starbucks coffee is always nice, keep it for special days as a reward. Trust me you will enjoy it twice as much!

4. Leave your car aside and take public transportation. This is not only more economical for the wallet, but also for the environment. The real die hards can go hiking. Not only will you save the biggest transportation cost, but you will also get fitter so you can get rid of that expensive gym membership. Win-win if you ask me.

5. Sell unnecessary stuff. You'll soon find that you don't need much when you travel around the world. After all, you only take with you what fits in your backpack so why not sell some of it now so you can do fun things with it while traveling. A memory is much more fun than all that stuff lying around in the closet, isn't it? Vinted is great for selling clothes and on facebook marketplace or second hand you can easily sell stuff you haven't touched in years.

6. Find an extra job. Hospitality is a bottleneck profession so easy to knock extra hours and earn an extra penny.

7. Quit smoking for smokers. Okay I admit I have failed here, but if you calculate that 1 pack a day costs 10 euros then you know that you will soon save 3500€ a year. Okay in Asia or South America it will not be as expensive, but believe me the quality is also proportional (I was convinced I was going to die when I smoked some cigarettes in Laos) not to mention that in Australia you pay 35€ per day per pack. Has your bill been made yet?

8. Do you really need that latest Iphone with that expensive subscription ? You can also easily buy a refurbished phone with just a phone plan can't you ? Saves you already easily 25€ per month so still another 300€ per year. An additional tip here is to pause your subscription while traveling or convert to an E-sim. That way you keep your number for 5 euros a year and you are not stuck with the monthly fee.

9. Buy the things you really need second-hand or ask family for them. After all, it is many times nicer to get a necessary birthday/ Christmas gift than junk you do nothing with.

10. Make lists for when you go to the store to avoid those impulse buys. Cook in larger portions and freeze. This is not only time-saving, but also saves you some money. Those bulk purchases always work out cheaper believe me! Limit those dinners with girlfriends or do them at home. After all, you have a goal and saving money is the biggest one.

When I travel, I use Trail Wallet to keep track of my spending. It's a nifty app that tells me how much money I have left and keeps everything organized into categories like transportation, food, and accommodation. Sadly, you can't download it anymore, but there are lots of similar apps available. Take a look at TripCoin or travelSpend to find one that suits you!

1. WorkAway or WooFF: Do a little volunteer work during your trip in exchange for free accommodation/meals or excursions. Perfect for really getting to know the culture and you'll save a pretty penny in the process. Worldpackers.com, freevolunteering.net, helpx.net, staydu.com are some other opportunities where you can trade your services for food and/or free accommodation. Be careful with volunteer work that requires you to pay hundreds of dollars. Firms claim that the money goes integrally to the organization, but it usually disappears into their own pockets. It is okay to pay a few euros in membership fees, but certainly not hundreds or thousands of euros.

2. Couchsurf: Sleep on someone's couch for a change. Not only is it free (except for the app fee), but you also get to know the locals. Always nice to get insider tips from someone who knows the city immensely well. It's so nice to exchange stories because most of the time your host are couchsurfers too. It's a community that is taking care of each other.

3. Work a few hours in a hostel in exchange for free accommodation. Win-win if you ask me. Some hostels even give you a free meal a day in exchange. Another option is Au pair. Not in a hostel but at houses in exchange for free accommodation and meals and maybe an extra bit of extra cash.

5. Compare compare compare compare. Tours are sometimes cheaper to book through the website of the provider itself (not always) nevertheless it is always good to do your research. With the euros you save here and there you can then do something else fun.

6. Consider camping. In some countries you pay nothing for this so many cheaper than those expensive accommodations. It is also much more adventurous and you come around the most beautiful places.

7. Teach! Whether you are good at a language or you want to pass on your cooking skills, teaching online is always something you can earn pennies from anywhere in the world. Superprof.com is the ideal website for this.

8. Consider to rent out your Apartment/room if you have one. Better that someone pays for your bills then that you have to pay for it while you are not there. Another option is to house swap. homeexchange.com is the ideal website but you have to pay $220 for the membership. Take a look on facebook for the free alternative there are many of groups where you can post this without breaking your bank.

9. Travel during the off-peak season: Consider visiting popular destinations during their off-peak seasons when prices for flights, accommodation, and attractions are generally lower.

10. Use flexible travel dates to your advantage by comparing prices for different departure and return dates. Sometimes, flying a day or two earlier or later can save you a significant amount of money.

I typically carry only a small amount of cash, around 250 euro/dollar, for emergencies. Nowadays, most places accept card payments or have ATMs available for convenient cash withdrawals.

Apply for your cards before booking your flights, accommodation etc because sometimes they come with a lot of benefits like free travel insurance or cancellation insurance and some offer extra miles that you can then use to book "free flights/accommodation."

Personally, I rather take the safe approach and travel with multiple cards. You never know what will happen. I make sure my cards are spread out so I'm sure I always have one on hand should anything get stolen/lost. Furthermore, I also make sure they are all linked to my Apple Pay and PayPal.

I always travel with my regular bank card that allows maestro (don't forget to put it on worldwide), a master-credit card and an American Express card from Brussels airlines that allows me to collect miles so I can save for "free" flights. This card also includes travel insurance (read the small lines because it is only if you made the transaction with the card). Note that Amex is not worldwide accepted but a little tip is to attach the card to your PayPall so the problem is solved. You even insure your belongings twice as both have these service provided.

Furthermore, I travel with 2 debit cards: Revolut and Wise. Both allow you to block your card in the app or create a card for one-time transaction to prevent fraud. Wise allows you to withdraw up to 200€ without extra fees and can convert currency into 40 different currencies with limited fees. Revolut uses the same principle. This card has several plans that allow you to withdraw between 200 and 2000 euros without paying the extra fees. You can even convert to crypto valuta with this card. Some plans even extra insurance for renting a car and many more.

An onward ticket is a proof of your intention to leave a destination and continue traveling to another destination. It is usually required by airlines or immigration officials as a way to ensure that visitors do not overstay their visa or travel illegally. For some countries (for example: Thailand, New Zealand, Philippines and many more) it is mandatory to show this onward, but what if you only booked a single ticket because you don't know what your next destination is yet? Don't panic I'll explain to you how to get around this. After all, you can book a fake exit ticket or onward. This ticket is a real ticket but is cancelled within 24/48 hours so you can easily show it to the airline as proof and still be allowed into the country you want to travel to. Some airlines allow cancellation free of charge within 48h or you can just make one yourself. I had no bite, it smelled okay and it costed me only one tenth of the less effective product I bought in my homecountry.

💥 Do you take Malaria tablets or not ?

Now, onto the topic of malaria tablets. Here's the deal: For me and many other travelers I've met, the answer is a big fat NO. Why? Well, for starters, those little pills cost a fortune. And here's the kicker - they mess with your head! Not in a literal sense, of course, but the dreams I had while taking them? Let's just say they were like taking 10,000 trips all at once. It was wild, but not exactly enjoyable.

But here's another thing to consider. In countries where malaria is a concern, they know what's up. They've got the resources and know-how to handle it, way better than we do in Europe. Take my experience in Indonesia, for example. When I got super sick, the docs there immediately knew it was a kidney pelvic infection. Just like good ol' Doctor Google already told me, But to be safe, they also did a malaria and dengue test. Thankfully, I had insurance 'cause those tests ain't cheap. Meanwhile, back in Belgium, nobody's ever asked me for those tests. And even my friend who's a flight attendant in Africa has to remind the docs there about the possibility of malaria. So, bottom line? If you do get sick in those kinds of countries, you're actually in pretty good hands. Better off than you would be in Europe, believe it or not! So, that's my two cents. Check with your doc, of course, 'cause they're the real experts.

But remember, sometimes it's okay to skip the meds and just go with the flow. Safe travels!

I've never thought I was going to put this on the list until I got bitten by a monkey in India. Totally out of the blue so the danger is real guys! (no worries, I am still alive when writing this and I was treated, but it was a logistical pain in my ass. Rabies is a viral disease that affects the central nervous system of mammals, including humans. It is primarily transmitted through the bite or scratch of an infected animal, commonly dogs, bats, raccoons, and foxes. The virus travels from the site of the bite to the brain and spinal cord, causing inflammation and damage. Symptoms of rabies can vary but typically appear within a few weeks to a few months after exposure. Initial signs may include fever, headache, and general weakness. As the disease progresses, individuals may experience anxiety, confusion, hallucinations, and difficulty swallowing. In the later stages, individuals may become hypersensitive to light and sound and may develop paralysis. Rabies is almost always fatal ( 99% ) once symptoms manifest, making it a serious public health concern. However, with prompt medical attention after exposure, it can be prevented through a post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) treatment. This involves a series of injections containing rabies vaccine and immunoglobulin. Think about altitude sickness pills for Nepal, not that I used those or the antibiotics they subscribed me in Thailand. Those were exactly the same as I got from my doctor. The only difference was that they didn't cost me anything as the insurance paid and they were still in good shape as they haven't travelled half the world in a backpack.
