Markets are distant lives

Markets are distant lives

I love visiting markets, whether they are fresh markets or flea markets. It allows me to experience other people’s lives and times past. In this list, I include the markets I’ve been to as well as my personal experiences there. I will also list other markets that I have not been to but plan to visit. (So if you have any unknown gems, please let me know in the comments!) This is a free guide and I will be updating it very slowly. So save it and check it out as soon as you arrive in your new city!

Mercat de Santa Caterina
@hortusquaerens
Tucked away in the charming El Born district of Barcelona, Mercat de Santa Caterina is a hidden gem that beckons with its authentic Catalan charm. A delightful departure from the more tourist-heavy markets, this market offers a genuine taste of local life. The atmosphere here is more relaxed compared to some of the larger markets. The vibrant colors of its undulating, mosaic-tiled roof set the stage for a leisurely stroll through its aisles. Locals gather here to shop for their daily provisions, creating an inviting and genuine ambiance.

Paris

Marche Maubert
@hortusquaerens
It's a farmer's market half the week, but I've come across antique furniture, home accessories, jewelries, books and maps for sale here more than once. That's even more interesting. If you're in the neighbourhood, don't forget to stop by and check out!

Houtplein, Haarlem
@hortusquaerens
In the warmer months, Houtplein in Haarlem occasionally hosts flea markets. I stumbled upon one on Instagram and decided to check it out—it was a great experience, with very reasonable prices. You can find the market dates through the IG link attached to this location, so be sure to check before planning your visit! I also highly recommend exploring Haarlem’s city center. It’s close to Amsterdam but much quieter, and easily accessible by train or bus.
