🇵🇹 Tasting Portugal: Lisbon
Lisbon is one of the smallest European capital cities, but it packs so much in! It’s a great destination if you want beauty, architecture, great food, or history. It’s also crazy cheap for a Western European city, which is a nice bonus.
Portuguese food resembles Spanish food, but with different spices. This is because of their long history of exploration in both the eastern and western hemispheres!
Foods to look for:
Definitely try as many pastéis de nata as possible! While you can find bakeries that only make these, they’re amazing almost anywhere you try them as long as they’re freshly made. Top with cinnamon - there’s always a shaker right by the cash register!
Seafood is king here! Eat at much as possible. You’ll find plenty of places that have fresh shellfish.
Bacalhau shows up a ton, in a bunch of different ways. It was popularized because it was such a seafaring culture, and salted cod keeps for long journeys. I like it best in croquettes!
You’ll also see tons of places offering sardines - canned year round, and fresh in summer. Even if they’re not your favorite food, go look at the colorful cans in the shops!
