Madeira is located in the Atlantic, off of the coast of Morocco. This means that the seawater remains fairly cold throughout the year, however the climate is mild and the vegetation is lush.

It was originally discovered by Portuguese sailors in the 15th century and became an important stop along Indian and African trade routes. Because of the Madeira climate, sugarcane production thrived here which in turn fueled demand for enslaved Africans.

Madeira wine (with a distinct flavor due to its aging process) became popular all over Europe and was beloved by the Founding Fathers of America.

Now, Madeira thrives off of the booming tourism industry. If you're interested in beautiful landscapes, hikes, surfing snorkeling and good food, this is a wonderful island to visit, especially in the summer months and September.
