[Free] Ultimate Copenhagen Food Guide

[Free] Ultimate Copenhagen Food Guide

In the past decade, the Copenhagen food scene has really exploded. From the high-end food scene, to the cozy cafés selling the local BMO (scroll to find out what it is!) - you definitely won't leave this city hungry. But you'll probably be a little bit broke. In this guide, I've saved all my favorite places (plus in the bottom, I added if they have additional locations/branches) - and I'll also continuously add any new spots that I try.

Good Things To Know

Book ahead: Most restaurants require reservations a few weeks in advance, and you won't have much luck with walk-ins. If you do, it's probably a tourist trap.

Party size: If you're more than 8+ people, you may need to pre-order your food in some cases.

Water: Regardless of if it's still or sparkling water, most restaurants will add a per person surcharge for water. This can range anywhere from 10 DKK to 50 DKK. This is often in replacement of a tip.

VAT: Taxes is already included in the price of your food and drink. You'll see it listed on your receipt as "moms" and the rate is 25%

Tipping: While you'll have to pay for water, tipping is not customary or expected in Copenhagen - but nonetheless always appreciated. There is no shame in clicking past the "Add Tip" on the POS machine, but if you the service was extra good - you can always round up.

Breakfast Cafés, Brunch, & Coffee Bars

Copenhagen has no shortage of cafés and coffee bars. In recent years, an obsession with BMOs (Bolle Med Ost) or a "bun with cheese" has taken the city by storm, and even the smallest of coffee bars typically sell this (as well as all the bakeries). There are plenty of mainstream cafés/bakeries (Espresso House - Wannabe Starbucks, Emmery's and Lagkagehuset - Both bakeries, but also serve some simple café fare), but I would encourage you visit the independent cafés splotched throughout local neighborhoods, and occassionally having 1-2 other branches.

Andersen & Maillard
@deguzstation
This used to be my go-to breakfast spot before work. Again, get the classic BMO + a soft boiled egg. They've also got a wide array of amazing pasteries. They're known for their croissant and the viral pastry cube with pistachio cream. This is the original location, and they've since branched out opening spots in Nordhavn with seating and a little shop in the city.

Wild horses Sydhavn
@deguzstation
This used to be my local café - and it is still an absolute favorite of mine. The café is run by Dane from Australia, and serves excellent coffee. Get their BMO, seasonal yogurt bowl or toasties. The Sydhavn branch is bigger, and features a mini art gallery. The Vesterbro is perfect stop by for a quick coffee.

Cadence
@deguzstation
My favorite place for brunch in Copenhagen, BUT make sure to book a table well in advance. An Australian-style café on the edge of Carlsberg Byen. They've got delicious seasonal hotcakes, a variety of savory dishes (think turkish eggs or marinated mushrooms on toast). If they're fully booked, you can try their sister cafe - The Sixteen Twelve on Nørrebro.

Kafeteria SMK
@deguzstation
It's a little bit weird... but the best pancakes in the city are at National Art Museum. You don't need a ticket to the museum to eat here.

Coffee Collective Godthåbsvej
@deguzstation
Probably the most popular coffee in Copenhagen, and while most people visit one of their more centrally located spots in Torvehallerne or Nørrebro - the original location in Frederiksberg is the perfect place to start a low-key and quiet morning. Oh and come summer - don't miss the coffee soft serve at some of their locations!

Kaf
@deguzstation
I haven't actually eaten at Kaf, but I've their cakes numerous times. This all vegan café is a Nørrebro staple, and loved for their vegan brunch and cheesecakes.

Grød
@deguzstation
Danes love their oats. But Grød takes it to the next level. Stop by for breakfast, lunch or even dinner. These creamy, delicious and rich oatiness. Don't miss the caramel sauce as a topping. This is the original - but they've popped up all around the city, and I've added all the other locations at the bottom of the guide.

Bakeries

Copenhagen is a city of pastries - and I highly recommend that you visit at least one (if not two, or three!) of it's premier bakeries while you're in town. Here are a couple of my favorites. P.S. Additional locations listed at this guide!

Hart Bakery
@deguzstation
This is the original location on Gammel Kongevej - but in the past 12 months, they've really expanded all across the city. The pastries are delicious. Get the spandauer (sometimes they'll have season ones with fresh fruit on top) and cardamom croissant. If you're feeling extra, get the basque cheesecake which is my absolute favorite.
Add to
Details
Københavns Bageri
@deguzstation
It's been called Denmark's best bakery. This little spinoff from two other cafés/bakeries has been a hit ever since it opened. I would recommend to get the traditional Tebirkes. It's my favorite. But everything here is to die for!

Juno - The Bakery
@deguzstation
You won't see the bakery first. You'll see the queue. They are famous for their cardamom buns. But again, nothing really disappoints.

Andersen Bakery
@deguzstation
Not to be confused with Andersen & Maillard - this is a Japanese bakery known for their fabulous pastries and their baguettes. I'm not joking... once I ate 6 pastries from here in 3 days. They are that good.
Add to
Details
Bageriet Brød
@deguzstation
Get a pastry. Get a toast. This is just a super solid Copenhagen bakery, and located at one of the best spots in the city. There's no real seating - so get your things to go and take a seat at Enghave Plads (directly outside) and people watch.

All-Day Cafés

Here's a couple all-day(ish) cafés that are great for breakfast, lunch or a late afternoon bite. Bang & Jensen + Beyla are also open for dinner.

Bang & Jensen
@deguzstation
This old apothecary turned all-day café serves up a classic breakfast plate with bread, an egg, fruit and yogurt + granola. They've also got a variety of food for lunch + dinner, and turn in into a casual bar in the evening.

Beyla
@deguzstation
Part of the Ark Collection, Beyla is the latest addition and located in Carlsberg Byen. Come here for their all vegan menu - get brunch, get lunch or stick around for dinner. They also do happy hour on Fridays, and they are famous for their 'Korean style' gochujang fried mushrooms!

Cheap-ish Eats

I called this category cheap-ish eats, because Copenhagen really isn't that cheap. But all of these places are great for a casual weekday and weekend bite alike - and you'll be satisfied with a main course for approx 120-150 DKK.

Slurp Ramen Joint
@deguzstation
Craving ramen? Then get in line - because this is the place to go. No bathroom, no bookings. So come early or get ready to wait. I am a sucker for their vegetarian mushroom & celeriac based ramen. They also do seasonal sides that are always fantastic.
Add to
Details
Kate's Joint
@deguzstation
I'm never sure how to explain Kate's Joint. They primarily make Asian inspired food (but also some Lebanese, Caribbean dishes - anything with lots of spices essentially). It's down-to-earth. It's low-key. They've got a small kitchen, so not every dish is served every day. You'll know which ones are/aren't available based on red dots on the menu. Vegetarian friendly with lots of great dishes to choose between. I love the sambal eggplant. In the summer, it's lovely to sit outside and people watch!

Poulette
@deguzstation
I'd recommend this spot for lunch. Get their spicy tofu or spicy chicken sandwich. One spice level - so be prepared.

Broens Street Food
@deguzstation
Haven't booked a table? Got picky eaters? Want to enjoy the nice weather? Then Broens Gadekøkken is probably the best place to go. A bunch of different stalls. Something for everyone. It is a bit touristy, but one of the few places local still enjoy. No need for cash - all the places take card.

Mid-Priced

Again, it's so difficult to categorize the wide array of restaurants in Copenhagen. But I've called this mid-priced. Many of them offer some kind of set menu with a wine pairing, but also à la carte.

Den Lille Fede
@deguzstation
I've been here countless times and never been disappointed. Quintessential Copenhagen indulgence, and the name translates to "The Little Fat One". Get the 5 course or 7 course menu, and corresponding wine pairing.
Add to
Details
Saji
@deguzstation
Samuel Tobing and Jimmy Orlando were originally working at a little fusion takeaway across the street, but I was so pleased when they opened their own Indonesian restaurant in CPH. Homemade sambal, pandan ice cream - they seriously bring the South East Asian flavors to CPH.

Propaganda Kitchen
@deguzstation
Trendy Copenhagen wine bar meets Seoul fried chicken. Come here for a great selection of wine to match fun twists on Korean dishes. Tteokbokki, claypot rice, cold noodles and of course... Korean Fried Chicken.

POPL Burger
@deguzstation
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the noma team opened up the burger pop-up and all of Copenhagen gathered in long queues to give it a try. Now a permanent Copenhagen fixture in the form of POPL Burger, it is still one of my favorite places to eat. The veggie burger is based on fermented quinoa and one-of-a-kind, and they do lots of seasonal dishes and cocktails that takes the elevation of burgers to a whole new Nordic twist. Again, book a table if you want to be sure to eat there. Otherwise, you can get takeaway and sit by the canals and enjoy.

Donda
@deguzstation

@deguzstation
It doesn't get more Nørrebro than this. Hip. Delicious. Multi-course servings. Lots of natural wine to pair, and at the heart of Ravnsborggade. Pop over to Kølsters Tolv Haner for a drink before or after. During the summer (and when the weather is warm), get a table outside and soak up the last rays of sun on those long summer nights.

Italian & Pizza

I gave this it's own category due to the great influx for wonderful pizza places in CPH - and then decided to throw in a few other great Italian places.

Bæst
@deguzstation
Christian Puglisi's Bæst is famous for their beastly pizzas and fresh mozzarella that they make daily. Again, it's all about farm-to-table, and they've got their own farm, aptly named Farm of Ideas, where they source many ingredients. Again, make sure to book in advance. If you can't get a table - then Mirabelle next door is also always worth a visit.

Details
SURT
@deguzstation
You haven't tried a Margherita pizza until you've had one at Surt. A giant Italian woodfire oven in the center of the chic Carlsberg Byen location. Lots of Italian wine, and nothing but the best pizza. My personal favorite is the Shrooms with blue oyster mushrooms, buffalo mozzarella, garlic, micro rucola. Don't miss out on their other dishes which are great to share!

Pizzeria MaMeMi & Wine Bar
@deguzstation
Another great Italian pizza place in Copenhagen - this time Roman style. Very thin and crisp. Did I mention they're in the top 25 pizzas in Europe? I'm sucker for mushrooms, and like their Funghi with garlic emulsion.

Paesàno

High-End Dining

This category is called high-end dining, and while some might break your budget - I also put Høst and Kødbyens Fiskebar in here for a more affordable alternatives, but with exquisite food.

Restaurant Koan
@deguzstation
If you're ready to spend $$$, then book a table well in-advance at Koan. Run by Kristian Baumann, this restaurant catapulted it's way to not one, but two Michelin stars. Inspired by his birth country of South Korea, Baumann has masterfully fusioned the New Nordic food scene with Korean flavors.
Add to
Details
Høst
@deguzstation
While it doesn't have any real Michelin acknowledgement - I do always put this on my fine dining list as it's a good intro to New Nordic dining. It's refined, but still accessible. Coming in at around 1,000 DKK per person including wine - it is also one of the most affordable upscale menus in the entire city. I recommend you book well in-advance, and recommend that you book a late seating to ensure you don't have another group coming after you.
Add to
Details
Noma
@deguzstation
Three Michelin Stars and led by super chef René Redzepi who basically sparked the transformation of the Copenhagen food scene. Haven't been yet - but will report back come August 2024, once I've more than likely fallen into the full hype.
Add to
Details
Punk Royale
@deguzstation
Again - a little bit of an odd one in the fine dining category. But the food and wine stack up, and the experience is out of this world. Punks will call you names, force feed you and make you drink wine through plastic syringes. It's a show. You've got to be open and ready for everything. Oh, and don't show up late. They may be punks, but they're very punctual.

JATAK
@deguzstation
After stints at both Noma and Relæ, Jonathan Tam opened his own place - JATAK - with a focus on fusing his Cantonese roots into modern cuisine. A few months later, he had a Michelin star. Wine Bars

There's no shortage of wine bars in Copenhagen. Some do really excellent food too - while others just do snacks. Copenhagen wine bars are all about the natural wine, and you'll find orange wine on the menu just about everywhere. If natural wine is something that is new to you - make sure to let them know so that they can guide you into the funky (& amazing) world that is natural wine.

But it's equally charming in the winter when it's packed with coats and the buzz of everyone trying to stay warm and cheery.

Cocktail Bars & Breweries

Gensyn - Frederiksberg

Restaurant Groups

Cofoco: Short for Copenhagen Food Collective, they've got a wide range of restaurants across the city. A couple of my favorites include Høst, Delphine, Oysters & Grill, Llama and Jah Izakaya. I haven't tried Donna yet - but it's high on my list to try!

Madklubben: Translating to "Food Club", Madklubben had restaurants across all of Denmark. They've also recently taken over the restaurant at the Carlsberg Brewery, which serves up some traditional Danish smørrebrød for lunch - and Carlsberg beer of course!

Pluto Group: Check out their flagship Pluto, but they've also got several other restaurants including Barbba, Bottega Estadio, Gorilla, Maison, Retour and Propaganda.

Norrlyst Group: They've rapidly opened several restaurants and earned Bib Gourmands. Check out Norrlyst, Theo, Odette, Gabrielle, Gemini, and most recently Abigail.

Cleo: Mentioned earlier in this guide, Cleo, also has other sister restaurants: Grimal, Frank, and Polly (a great place for brunch!)

South Harbour Café

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Hi there! I'm Jasmine - a foodie based in wonderful Copenhagen, Denmark. I love exploring different restaurants - and I'm the go-to person for restaurants recommendations amongst my friends & family. I also love travelling, but especially love the planning phase to make sure that I don't miss out on hidden gems + optimizing your time! I'd love to help you explore Copenhagen + Southern Sweden. Feel free to follow me on my food-stagram where I post my favorite meals here in Copenhagen, as well as during my own personal travels: @deguzsation
