When I moved to here in 2015 as a nanny, I discovered the cultural activity called "gouté", which is what the french call the afternoon snack. For kids after school this looks like a pastry from the boulangerie, some chouquettes (in this guide), or chocolate wedged between a baguette. Basically anything baked and buttery with chocolate qualifies as a gouté.
