My FAVE Bakeries in Paris

My FAVE Bakeries in Paris

Tamara Budrow
This is a food map of where to get my favorite sweets and pastries from different bakeries in Paris. When I moved to here in 2015 as a nanny, I discovered the cultural activity called "gouté", which is what the french call the afternoon snack. For kids after school this looks like a pastry from the boulangerie, some chouquettes (in this guide), or chocolate wedged between a baguette. Basically anything baked and buttery with chocolate qualifies as a gouté. If you find yourself in Paris and want to partake in this cultural daily tradition, or just want to have some of the best baked goods you'll ever have IN YOUR LIFE, save this guide and check out the places below.

For the BEST eclairs in the oldest bakery to still exist in Paris:

Stohrer
@discovereveryflavor
The oldest bakery in the entire city of Paris! Just seeing this place is worth a trip to Stohrer, but if you come in, you MUST try the eclairs. Hands down, the best eclairs I've had in Paris, and nothing else has come remotely close. The filling is light and the top ganache is rich and decadent. They have 2 different flavors of chocolate, coffee, and salted caramel. Honestly just get one of each for your trip. Let's face it, you might be back for more anyway!

Stohrer is the oldest bakery still standing in Paris, and dates back to the 1700s 🤯 Located in the 2nd arrondissement on an old walking & open market street called Rue Montorgueil, this tiny bakery is worth visiting for both its history and its eclairs. I never really was a big fan of eclairs. Inside the boulangerie, I found many other sweet treats to excite me more. That was until a friend and I were having lunch on Rue Montorgueil one day years back, and instead of getting dessert there he told me we had to get eclairs from Stohrer. My first bite into the chocolate eclair felt like a scene from Ratatouille. How was it so good?! It's worth the 5€ price tag and the journey to see the historic spot, but I have a hot tip for you! The chocolate shops, A La Mere de Famille feature Stohrer bakery items, so if you have one of those near you, you can get your hands on one of these babies when the craving hits (because it will).

For the BEST custard flan:

Jeffrey Cagnes Paris 17ème
@discovereveryflavor
One of three bakeries by Jeffrey Cagnes. Notably known for their babkas but my favorite item here is the flan. It's got a sugar coated crust and the custard is perfectly sweet. Their more "fancy" desserts are also insanely good. Try them all if you have the space in your tummy.

The flan that changed the game for me is at Jeffrey Cagnes bakeries. The one noted here is in my neighborhood (dangerous to be that close) and chosen between the other 2 locations also for that reason. The part of the 17th arrondissement known as Batignolles is a very quaint, vibrant, boutique-y neighborhood full of young and wealthy families. Anyway, back to the flan! It's not a dessert I typically seek out anywhere, but here? OMG. Let me tell you.. The custard is perfectly sweet, not baked but put into an already baked, sugar coated crust. It's kind of like a mix between a creme broulée and a pie. You must try one! You can take a few things here and walk to your next location below.

Scoop Me a Cookie - Legendre
@discovereveryflavor
A cookie shop featuring nothing but insanely gooey cookies. What else could you ask for?? With over 5 locations, you can likely pick up one of these decadent sweets from your neighborhood, or trek to mine for this location. Either way, you get your pick of your favorite cookie and trust me, it will be hard to choose.

For the BEST praline roll:

La Fournèe d’Augustine
@discovereveryflavor
My local bakery, but without bias, the best bakery in Paris. They have a praline roll that I have not found anywhere else and some of the best almond croissants too!
Add to
Details

We're still in my neighborhood for this one, but for good reason because I have not found this treat in any other bakery than my local one. It's a praline swirl/roll or "rouleau praliné". You've probably seen the raisin ones in many bakeries, but this one is pink inside the swirls and like nothing you've had before. I highly recommend you try it here. There are some excellent coffee shops just footsteps away too, or you can be Parisian af and just get the café from the bakery "en emporter" (takeaway).

For the BEST jewish treats:

Sacha Finkelsztajn - La Boutique Jaune
@discovereveryflavor
In the heart of the Marais on a very historic street (Rue des Rosiers), this is the best and only jewish bakery you need to try. I love the mini babkas the most. Some of their cakes and other desserts are priced by weight. You can also get savory jewish style bagel sandwiches here.
Add to
Details

If you find yourself wandering around the Marais (which most do since it's such a lively part of central Paris), make sure you peep the historic street Rue des Rosiers. You can get a jewish kebab here, but be sure to get some sweet treats from this little old-school bakery. Let your eyes order for you and don't be shy. Or just get a huge bag of little chocolate babkas which are my personal favorite.

For the BEST cream puffs:

Dunes Blanches Chez Pascal Paris Marais
@discovereveryflavor
Specializing in cream puffs, you must try these little "white dunes" if in the Marais. This is the only place in Paris that I have found chouquettes filled with cream and they are the only way to enjoy them IMO.
Add to
Details

If you're already in the Marais thanks to the last rec, then you must get your sweet tooth over to Dunes Blanches for their cream filled chouquettes. You read that right, I said "cream filled". What are chouquettes you may ask? They are tiny little puff pastry bites which have a crunchy white sugar on top. The puff pastry ends up being hollow, so they typically use larger ones to make profiteroles by cutting them in half and placing a scoop of ice cream on them before sandwiching them back together and pouring hot fudge over them. I digress... the chouquette is a mini version of the puff pastry, but without anything inside, they can make a good little afterschool snack, but lack the bang of some delicious "chantilly" or whipped cream. At Dunes Blanches it's all they make, so you know they are good.

For the BEST IG content and treat in one:

La Quéquetterie
@discovereveryflavor
One part funny and silly, other part delicious. This little sweet shop serves up stuffed pancakes shaped like genitalia and covered with chocolate sauces and toppings. You can get a pic for the gram, a good laugh, and also hit your sweet tooth at La Quéquetterie (the weenerie in French slang)
Add to
Details

This naughty bakery serves up pancakes shaped like genitalia. La Quéquette is french slang for weenie.. you know which one I mean. It's not weird unless you make it weird! This place very often has a line out front, which deterred me at first. I thought ,who would wait in line for a penis shaped cake? Then one day I passed by and there was no line. So I let that be my opportunity to see what the hype was all about. They have tons of flavor combos to choose from, but for the most part these are just decoration preferences. Make sure you get a picture with your treat for the gram and then dig in. These are decadent and way too delicious to be so silly. Honestly, I want one right now.

For the BEST meringue:

Aux Merveilleux de Fred
@discovereveryflavor
For the best meringue dessert you could ever dream up, go to Aux Merveilleux de Fred! Translates to the wonders of Fred, these little cakes of many flavors have a base of home-made meringue and whipped cream. IFKYK. They have many locations and you can almost always watch them make these little treats when you're there. They also come in different sizes, so you can taste many or get a bigger one for a special occasion.
Add to

Idk about you, but when I think of meringue I usually think of pavlova. I don't usually think of cakes, but at the wonders of Fred, they've made cakes based off of home-made meringue and whipped cream. If you've tasted whipped cream in France, you've probably figured it out by now that it is something special. The little cakes here come in different sizes which is great for sampling many or going big on your favorite. I love the one with chocolate shavings. They have many locations but I've chosen the one here because it has a huge hanging chandelier and are right by the Moulin Rouge and Montmartre. Another cool feature is that they have an open kitchen plan for their locations, so you can see them making the cakes once you're inside. How fun!

For the BEST donut:

Boneshaker Donuts
@discovereveryflavor
An American baker gets her baking credentials in France = the best donuts! Boneshaker is the best and OG donut spot in Paris. You won't find many average flavors here. You're gonna get elevated options like maple bacon, creme broulée, and even vegan options.
Add to
Details

Whenever I get a visa or accomplish another overwhelming and complicated administrative task with the French government, I always make my way to Boneshaker. It's a funny thing to treat oneself with such an american delicacy in France, but sometimes you just want what you want. Boneshaker is owned and ran by an American woman (yes!) who went to pastry school in France. Crossing the best of both worlds, her creations are really really good. Like really. Donut shops have popped up to take their share of the donut interest, but none have come close to the quality and unique creations at Boneshaker. When you pop in, ask if any have just come out because I've learned this is the best moment to try any donut. Under these conditions is when I tried their cinnamon sugar vegan donut...warm and orgasmic.

For the BEST everything French

Du Pain et des Idées
@discovereveryflavor
Easily one of the best french bakeries in Paris for trying everything you possibly can get your hands on.
Add to
Details

Notably one of the best bakeries in all of Paris. The selection here is out of this world and they supply so many of their pastries, bread, and desserts to many of the great restaurants nearby such as the famous brunch spot, Holy Belly. I suggest grabbing as much as you can/what they have available at the time you go and take it to the canal Saint Martin (if the weather is nice of course) to enjoy your baked goods while watching boats go by.

For the BEST croissants

La Maison d'Isabelle
@discovereveryflavor
Bustling bakery with incredibly fresh croissants. Easily one of the best in Paris and winner of the best croissant 2023.
Add to
Details

This no-fuss no-frills bakery has the freshest and best croissants that you absolutely have to try. You'll know you've made it to the right place when you see the line. Don't worry it moves fast. As a general rule, if you see a line anywhere in Paris, that's the place you want to try.

For the BEST chocolate-pistachio roll

The French Bastards - Saint-Denis
@discovereveryflavor
Bakery selling pastries and desserts. Must try their chocolate-pistachio roll.
Add to
Details

This is one of many locations across Paris, so you have no excuse not to try! I like this location the most because it's central and near a lot of other great places to try, so you can do your own little food tasting tour. They sell a lot of baked goods but their chocolate pistachio roll is the best and unique to them IMO.

For the BEST bakery in Montmartre

La Bossue
@discovereveryflavor
Super tiny but cute bakery that also does brunch. The best in the Montmartre area by far.
Add to
Details

If you're up in Montmartre you need to know where the best bakery is. It's this one, La Bossue. Get all of your treats as a reward for the hike up the hill towards Sacré Coeur and enjoy them with a view over Paris.

For the BEST cinnamon roll

Roll in Paris
@discovereveryflavor
Strictly cinnamon rolls and coffee. The best in Paris.
Add to
Details

Believe me when I say that there is no other place in all of Paris that does a proper cinnamon roll. I found most of them in France to be a bit dry and lacking frosting and sweetness. The ones you'll find at many cafés are more like babkas, but not here! Roll in does just cinnamon rolls and coffee. Plus it's women owned, yay!

For the BEST cupcakes

Besties Bakery
@discovereveryflavor
Cake and cupcake bakery that's not just cute but also really good and reasonable
Add to
Details

When this place first opened up I thought it would be overhyped and not worth it. I was wrong. Their cupcakes make not only the perfect little gift to bring to a birthday or meetup, but they are also super good and worth treating yourself too! They also do big cakes if you have any kind of event. I did one for my birthday and it was not just good but it was also STUNNING.

For the BEST gluten free treats

Boulangerie Chambelland Oberkampf
@discovereveryflavor
The best gluten free bakery in all of Paris. One of 2 locations
Add to

For the BEST babka

Mamiche
@discovereveryflavor
Bakery serving up lots of soft and delicious baked goods. Try the babka, it's the best in Paris!

For the BEST praline brioche

Pralus
@discovereveryflavor
BEST brioche in Paris, get the praline one! They also have really good macarons.
Add to
Details

I can't remember who told me about this bakery some years ago, but I went immediately after he described it to me. They specialize in brioche and make a praline one that is literally to die for.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Tamara Budrow
Hi there! If you've found me here, it's likely that we have a lot in common when it comes to travel. Perhaps your bestie/cousin/colleague sent you my way. PS, tell them I say "hey!" 🙋🏼‍♀️ About me: I've been living in Paris & working in the food and tourism industry for almost a decade. In 2015, after what seemingly was a burnout (but didn't know it at the time), I relocated my whole life from the US to France to be an au pair and just BE in the city that shook something awake in me in 2012. I went from working 3 jobs/80 hour weeks to a verrrry casual 16 hour/week babysitting gig after school. Needless to say, my years in Paris since then have been spent exploring the hell out of it, every day, like a palm reader might know their hand. Paris is a place that changes (for the better) every single day. It's something that feeds my flame and makes my passion for discovering this city more of a driven purpose. In addition to sharing my love & expertise of Paris to the world, I also independently run my own luxury picnic service. My clients come from all over the US and other anglophone countries but have one thing in common. They want to experience Paris the best way possible: With little fuss and once in a lifetime experiences. My picnics are what make my clients trust me completely with their future itineraries and food recs. I love Paris but, like you, I also want to explore the world through travel. When it's not picnic season, I'm usually away traveling as much as possible. My travel style is a bit spontaneous and laid back, and GOOD FOOD FOCUSED. The only itineraries I keep are based around markets and reservations. I'm willing to dish out some $$ when it's WORTH IT! This is mostly what you'll find here. So if you love to explore the many flavors that different countries have to offer on a serious foodie level like me, then we're soon gonna be best friends 👯‍♀️
