The Merlion is an iconic symbol of Singapore, representing a mythical creature with the head of a lion and the body of a fish, symbolizing the city's historical connection to the sea and its original name, "Singapura" or "Lion City."

This Tang-styled Buddhist temple was designed by the temple’s Chief Abbot Venerable Shi Fa Zhao, inspired by the Buddhist Mandala, a symbol of Buddhist culture that represents the universe. The built cost S$75 million.
More info on the 3 levels of temple below.
Embrace the local food culture. Here you'll find a lot of good food (you can identify places like that if you see a lot of elderly, their tastebuds are hard to please).
It is generally a crowded place, hosting 260 stalls. I'd recommend going early, around 8am - 10am. Lunch time gets crazy and the good ones sell out early.
There are a lot of food to try in Singapore, so eat all the small-portion type (like tapas) to avoid getting full too quickly.
I've linked a list of 15 food reccos below. Here’s my shortlist:
- 2 - Vegetable roll (Popiah)
- 3 - Rice noodle rolls (Chee cheong fun)
- 7 - Chicken rice, national dish
- 12 - Old School Ice Dessert (Chendol)
- 13 - Soup Noodle with meat & fish paste (Yong Tau Fu) // It is customary to customize, you choose the type of noodle (I like thin noodles: beehoon), the meat, vege and soup (I recommend clear soup: qing tang) you want
Kampong Glam is a historic district in Singapore known for its vibrant cultural heritage, featuring colorful streets, traditional Malay and Arab architecture, and the iconic Sultan Mosque.
The mosque holds great significance for the Muslim community and is considered the national mosque of Singapore. It was designated a national monument in 1975.
More history info in link below.

In the past, Bussorah Street was known as Kampong Kaji (Pilgrim Village), as it was where many pilgrims undertaking the haji to mecca would gather.
Hailed as Singapore’s first outdoor art gallery, with about 30 artworks by local & international artists graffiti work across the back alleys of Muscat Street.
A nostalgic old-school mall where I spent my teenage years with friends shopping for cheap outfits, bags, etc.
Great place to buy local snacks and try tropical fruits from the stalls at the end of the street.
Apart from clothes, there are tattoo shops on the 2nd floor and cheap (for Singapore) beauty services (nails, brows) on the 3rd floor.
I generally don't like Capsule hotels because of how claustrophobic it looks, but this one looks more like a dorm.
~ SGD 50+/night
However, they don't have a booking.com link. Agoda link is below.
Free entry, photo-taking is allowed.
Step into one of Singapore’s oldest Hindu temples. Dedicated to the goddess and destroyer of evil, Sri Veeramakaliamman or Kali. Many Indians who prayed at the temple worked in lime kilns in the area.
Dress code:
Dress conservatively. Cover up your legs and shoulders. Make sure you remove your shoes and store them around the entrance in the designated area.
Built in 1900, the former house of Tan Teng Niah is the last surviving Chinese villa in Little India. It embodies an often overlooked story when small Chinese businessmen operated in this area.
Now it mainly serves as a landmark.
Tekka Centre is a down-to-earth local wet market, foodstalls, and textile shops.
Reccos:
- Classic Indian breakfast: Roti prata plain / Roti prata egg (first photo)
The Serangoon Road area was never designated by Raffles as an area for the Indian community, unlike ‘Chinatown’ or ‘Kampong Glam’.
Nonetheless it has developed since the mid-1800s, into the heart of Singapore’s Indian community and is now the main venue for public celebrations of important Hindu/Indian festivals such as Deepavali and Pongal.
Walk along the street to discover:
- traditional businesses like goldsmiths
- Indian restaurants and coffee shops
- saree shops
- stalls selling garlands and sweets
- boutiques and souvenir shops.
A unique 24-hour market style shopping experience. You can find all sorts of products at low prices here, from watches to souvenirs to food.
The mall is 2 department stores joined together with goods sold under the Mustafa name and streamlined by type.
You can consider getting some local dry food or souvenirs here!
Very near to all the spots I've pinned here as you can see. Walking distance to 3 MRT is such a plus. The blue (Downtown) line is connected to all major attractions, so it's very convenient.
~ SGD 100/night
The price is pretty worth the value considering:
- the space of the room based on photos,
- a lot worse options with bad reviews in this area (strangely as compared to the other two areas I've researched)
Recommend it if you have the budget. There is only Agoda link, see below
It's slightly further from the pins I've listed but still very walkable, around 20-30mins. This way, you also get to explore the non-touristic streets of Little India.
~ SGD 50/night
It is the best hostel option I can find for this area
