The vibrant city-state of Singapore is nestled at the tip of the Malay Peninsula. This tiny island nation is a harmonious blend where tradition meets modernity. Singapore has a captivating history and rich cultural heritage that is celebrated through its diverse blend of ethnicities, languages, and religions. 

Singapore was once a small, old fishing village on the edge of the jungle. It went through an incredible transformation and turned into the bustling metropolis and the global economic powerhouse that it is today. Despite its futuristic architecture, Singapore's history is preserved throughout the city such as its lush green spaces, colonial black and white bungalows, and Peranakan shophouses. 

Singapore has so much to offer. The world-class Changi airport, immaculate cleanliness, vibrant street food culture, efficient public transportation, low crime rates, and strict governance (most famously, the chewing gum ban) to name a handful. The only downfalls I can think of are the insane heat and humidity as Singapore sits right on the equator. 

So why local-ish? I first visited Singapore when I was 6-months old. My dad was born and raised in Singapore. Funnily enough, one of my mom's brothers has lived there for 30 years and we've had a handful of other family members (on both sides) live there over the years too. I've lost count of how many times I've visited but it's definitely one of my favorite places in the world and feels a bit like home.

If you've never been to Asia before, Singapore is the perfect destination to start with. It's like a stepping stone to the rest of the world. Here are all my recommendations on what to do, see, eat, and drink in Singapore. Scroll to the bottom for an overview of everything you need to know before booking your trip to the Lion City.

A Local-ish Guide to Singapore

This is the ultimate 7-day itinerary for when you visit Singapore. Focused on Jewel, Orchard, Somerset, Bugis, Marina Bay Sands, Clark Quay, ChinaTown, Sentosa. 

There will be a lot of walking under the hot weather (cause its Singapore, so make sure to check the weather report often) So i tried to keep this itinerary simple yet enjoyable. Which means you get to walk around to enjoy Singapore and still have some energy left, will not drain your energy or end up with leg pain.

For the ultimate Singapore experience with a glamorous twist, use the historic and opulent Raffles Hotel as your base. Retire to the intimacy of The Writers Bar for pre-dinner drinks and put dinner reservations in the hands of your personal butler. 

With Natureland Reflexology and Massage a 1-minute walk away, spend your mornings shopping and exploring and your afternoons reviving your tired feet in the cool comfort of Natureland.

If antique shopping is on your agenda, venturing to one of Singapore’s junk stores can be thrilling. One of the best is Tong Mern Sern on Craig Road; it houses three floors of antiques which will please even the most discerning collector. 

If you love handmade ceramics, Mud Rock Ceramics is where high end restaurateurs source their plates and where those in the know shop for one-of-a-kind hand moulded pieces with beautiful glazes. Ceramic Loft also has a unique range of handmade and bespoke bowls, plates, vessels, decor and art pieces and Thow Kwang Pottery Jungle is known for their huge range of plates, tableware, baking dishes and outdoor pots in the Peranakan style.

If shopping and exploring leaves you in need of a cool down, head to Rempapa chef Damian D'Silvas favourite bar, No.5 Emerald Hill which he says is the only bar that still retains the nostalgia of Eighties Singapore. In his words, "It may not have the most creative cocktails, but the moment you walk in, you feel comforted and relaxed, and the beer is cold." 

For the ultimate cool down, return to the hotel and take an invigorating dip in the rooftop pool. Lose yourself in a holiday read or indulge in a light meal with a cocktail or an icy beer as you watch the sky momentarily cloud over for the inevitable tropical rain shower.   

Dining out is a way of life in Singapore and it is truly a foodlover's paradise. You can indulge in a Michelin starred affair at Cloudstreet one day and enjoy the buzzing energy and authentic flavours of chilli crab, chicken rice and satay at the Lau Pa Sat or Maxwell hawker centre the next.

Gardens by the Bay

Gardens by the Bay is an incredible horticultural and architectural project. Symbolizing the city-state's commitment to urban greening.

- Garden Rhapsody. Free light show at Supertree daily, 7.45pm and 8.45pm.

- Visit one of the two AC Domes if you have time. Cloud Forest is a good one with the World's Largest Indoor Waterfall in it!

Gardens by the Bay is the main attraction in Singapore! Is a showpiece of horticulture and garden artistry that presents the plant kingdom in a whole new way, entertaining while educating visitors with plants seldom seen in this part of the world, ranging from species in cool, temperate climates to tropical forests and habitats.

In the movie, the Supertree Grove is the lavish location of Colin (Chris Pang) and Araminta (Sonoya Mizuno)'s wedding after-party.

Don't miss the free Garden Rhapsody light and sound show every night at 7:45/ 8:45 p.m. Would also recommend checking out the Cloud Forest and Flower Dome (ticketed).    

This is a fantastic tourist spot in Singapore that you won't want to miss. The variety of plants and the unique displays are truly amazing. The Cloud Forest section is particularly impressive, with its treetop walk and stunning indoor waterfall that is a favorite photo spot for many visitors.

If you have seen the movie "Crazy Rich Asians", you are probably familiar with Gardens by the Bay. This place is huge and offers really pretty gardens and beautiful scenery. 
Do note that if you want to go inside the buildings, such as the Flower Dome, you do need to pay.  

The super tree light show is at 7:45pm and 8:45pm. If your room is close to level to the trees that is a better view point, otherwise you can walk among the trees or watch from the lookout point on top of the Marina Bay Sands.

Absolutely loved the Gardens by the Bay! I highly recommend you get tickets for the Cloud Forest, Floral Fantasy and the OCBC Skyway. In the evenings you can watch a free Light Show at the Supertree Grove at 19h45 and 20h45.

Start your day at this iconic park. Roaming the park is free, but attractions like the OCBC Skyway and Supertree Observatory are worth the fee. 

Consider booking tickets online to skip the lines.

This is the time when you get to see everything colourful on one hand and lush green on the other. Enjoy Flower Dome for flowers and Cloud Forest to see some AVATAR scenes.

In the evening, head over to Gardens by the Bay, where you can explore the stunning Supertree Grove and enjoy a free night-time light show, daily at 7:45 PM and 8:45 PM. "

Gardens by the Bay light show takes place daily, at 7:45 PM and 8:45 PM. Each light show runs for 15 minutes. Remember to grab a seat to enjoy the dazzling lights 🤩

Here you can visit 2 domes: Cloud Forest and Dlower Dome. Both Re just amazing and I can assure you that you will like it.

It will be crowded so make sure you come earlier. (before the light show starts at 7:45 PM and 8:45 PM)

Massive green space and vertical gardens housing all kinds of flora and fauna. A must-see.

Visit the Supertree grove and catch the light show that happens every night. 

Be sure to plan your trip in advance and book your tickets online!
