Divided by Baghdad Street, Bussorah Street has two distinct segments that reflect Kampong Glam’s rich cultural past. The stretch in front of Masjid Sultan was once called Kampong Kaji, or "pilgrim village," as it was where Southeast Asian pilgrims would meet to receive guidance from Sheikh Hajis before embarking on the Haj pilgrimage. The section extending from Beach Road to Baghdad Street, known as Kampong Tembaga, or "copper village," was once a thriving area for Javanese coppersmiths. As the day winds down, Bussorah Street truly comes to life with a variety of Middle Eastern restaurants, cafes, and shops spilling out onto the pedestrian street, creating a welcoming and festive atmosphere. For a peaceful retreat, the nearby Sultan Gate park offers a quiet, well-maintained green space with benches where visitors can rest amidst beautifully preserved architecture, perfect for a serene stroll or a relaxing break.
