With temperatures rising for the summer season, we put together a List of some of our favorite coastal campgrounds in California for you to check out and stay cool.
A lot of these get booked up pretty far in advance on the weekends, so be sure to check their website before you head out to one of them. If you can’t find a spot for this season, mark a time on your calendar to sag reservation for next season! And remember, you can always check out some of these areas as day trips and spend the night inland or at a nearby site.
As always, midweek camping is always the easiest for First Come, First Served or even reservable spots. So take a few days of work and get to the coast!!

The Southwest United States generally refers to Utah, Arizona, Nevada, and the surrounding areas of the states surrounding those states. Due to the vast amount of untouched land in each of these states, there is ample opportunity for camping and exploring. This list has our favorite free campsites in the area, for those of you who just want to hit the road and relax in the desert. Many of these camps are owned and operated by the Bureau of Land Management. Be sure to always practice Leave No Trace when camping in a free campground, as they often don’t have the level of maintenance supplied by paid campsites.

This guide includes all the campgrounds in the park and their information. If you need more info or a custom guide, please contact me for a consultation.
~ Campsites:
The majority of the campsites in the park are available by reservation. Reservations can be made the same day or up to 6 months in advance and can be booked on recreation.gov.
Book your site before entering the park.
All other sites are first come first serve.
~ Cell service:
Very unreliable and nonexistent in Joshua Tree National Park. For a reliable option use Gaia GPS's cell coverage map, it's more of an investment for this premium layer but it's well worth it. For a cheaper option with more work use the (Free cell coverage link) below.
~ Reservations:
It is highly recommended if you plan to camp on a holiday, a weekend, or any day of the week in the spring.
The busy spring season runs from November to May. October is the slowest and best time. For first come first serve campsite.
(Reservation Link) below.
~ Summer Status/open date:
All reservation campgrounds are open year-round. Some sections of Indian Cove Campground, Black Rock Campground, and Cottonwood Campground close in the summer.
