Welcome to the Atlantic side ! Portugal is located in the south of France, next to Spain, and on the contrary is open to the Atlantic ocean and not the Mediterranean sea! The beaches are still beautiful, and cities like Porto or Lisbon have the advantage of being "inside" the country. They both have an inside sea, for city trips, but also a part located at the ocean for more "beachy" holidays. Then again, the most beautiful beaches would be in the south, in the Algarve region :)

1. Jeronimos Monastery
Cost: €12 for adults, free for children under 12, €6 for seniors (65+), and €6 for students; or free with the Lisboa Card.
Highlights:
Jeronimos Monastery, also known as Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, is a stunning example of Manueline architecture, a Portuguese style that combines Gothic and Renaissance elements with maritime motifs. Commissioned by King Manuel I in the early 16th century, the monastery was built to commemorate Vasco da Gama's successful voyage to India and to give thanks to the Virgin Mary for his safe return.
The monastery's architecture is simply spectacular. The intricate stone carvings adorning the façade showcase the wealth and artistry of Portugal's Age of Discovery. Detailed motifs, such as twisted ropes, sea creatures, and botanical elements, reflect the country's seafaring history and the natural world. And inside, visitors can marvel at the beautiful cloisters, considered some of the most magnificent in the world.
Tips:
- With so much to see, make sure to plan to spend at least a couple of hours exploring the monastery and its grounds.
- After your visit, take some time to check out from Pastéis de Belém, which has been serving their famous custard tarts since 1837. It's just a short walk from the monastery and is a must-try treat while in Lisbon.
Best Time to Go: The lines can get very long, so make sure to get there right when they open at 9:30 am.
2. Miradouro de Santa Luzia
Cost: Free
Highlights: This miradouro (viewpoint) offers one of the best views in Lisbon, as it provides a panoramic look at the Alfama district and the Tagus River. The tiled mosaics and beautiful gardens add to its charm, making it the perfect spot to catch a sunset.
Best Time to Go: We recommend going at sunset. The views at sunset are especially breathtaking at that time and the lighting is perfect for photos.
3. Carmo Convent
Cost: €7 for adults, €5 for children, students, & seniors.
Highlights: The Carmo Convent, a stunning example of Gothic architecture, stands as a significant reminder of Lisbon's past. Partially destroyed by the devastating earthquake of 1755, the convent's roofless nave creates a beautiful open-air space. Today, it houses the Carmo Archaeological Museum, where visitors can explore a fascinating collection of artifacts, including prehistoric relics, medieval tombs, and ancient sculptures.
Best Time to Go: The Carmo Convent tends to get crowded in the afternoon, so we recommend getting there when it opens at 10 am.
4. Praça do Comércio
Cost: Free
Highlights: One of the largest squares in Europe, Praça do Comércio is bordered by impressive yellow buildings and the Tagus River. It's a vibrant hub of activity with restaurants, cafes, and the iconic Rua Augusta Arch.
Best Times to Go: We recommend going in the early evening to catch the sunset. The square is also beautifully lit at night, perfect for a leisurely stroll after dinner.
5. Lisbon Cathedral
Cost: €5 for adults, €3 for children
Highlights: The oldest church in Lisbon, the Lisbon Cathedral features a mix of Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque architectural styles. Highlights include the impressive rose window, the Gothic cloister, and the treasury with its collection of sacred art.
Best Time to Go: To avoid the crowds, we recommend going in the early morning or late afternoon.

The magnificent tile!
It’s hard to resist falling in love with the azulejos (tiles) adorning the buildings of Lisbon. It seems cliché and obvious, but those tiles are ubiquitous and will overwhelm you with the sheer number of façades. Only a cold heart is impervious to their charm. And, most can be easily viewed from street level -- even while pushing a stroller.
You will see tiles everywhere you go. So, it almost seems silly to suggest a tile walking route because any walking route automatically becomes a de facto tile walking route just by virtue of being in Lisbon! It would be like suggesting a blue sky walk, or a bacalhau restaurant walk – it will automatically happen! Instead, EFTF has highlighted a few areas in which to pay extra attention to the tiles. These areas can be folded into a day’s itinerary or be the target of a special trip by an especially smitten family member.
These are presented in descending order of appropriateness for children. It’s not that tiles aren’t appropriate for children; it’s more that kids aren’t doing cartwheels in excitement for them. And as we move down this list, the tiles can be within a child’s reach – breakable!

The elevation changes in Lisbon provide drama. On foot, you can see streets intersecting at all sorts of odd angles. Get to the top of one of the city's seven hills and you will find sweeping views. The problem is that everybody else is trying to take-in those same vistas.
The Portuguese have a word, Miradouro, which means viewpoint. I have no doubt you will find Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara or Miradouro da Graça and all the other famous viewpoints. This list is for some out-of-the-way, less obvious locations that provide great views with fewer people around.
I hesitate to call these undiscovered or unknown views in Lisbon. They exist ergo they are known. Let's call them unconventional. These spots are rarely in the guide books and aren't part of the Instagram algorithm yet. I want to share these spots, most of which I found by accident, because they are slyly spectacular.

São Miguel Island is the largest--in both size and population--of the Azores. The Green Island was discovered and claimed by the Portuguese in the early 15th century. Mild climate and fertile volcanic soil made the island appealing for settlers. It quickly became an export hub for in-demand sugar. A fishing industry eventually followed. Now it's tourists who are flocking to the island. They're lured by black-sand beaches, hidden hot springs, lake-filled craters, Europe's only tea plantations, quiet hiking trails, volcanic hills, and whale-watching tours. Be sure to spend some time in Ponta Delgada, the easy-to-navigate capital, as well.
This detailed guide includes:

Ponta Delgada is the capital of the Azores. "Thin Cape" sits on the southwest shore of São Miguel Island, the largest island in the autonomous archipelago. The city was a small fishing village until a 1522 earthquake destroyed Vila Franca do Campo, the island's original capital. Ponta Delgada quickly got an upgrade. Its economy and size grew with the citrus-exporting business. Black-and-white basalt buildings--a bell tower, churches, squares--still fill the city's historic core. New gourmet restaurants and waterfront bars do, too. It's easy to get to know Ponta Delgada by walking, as the narrow streets all eventually lead down to the large marina. Let your Azorean adventure begin!
