Montreux is not a huge city and very walkable (but steep). The center of Montreux is pretty much next to the train station and going down to the Lake. The Old Town is situated in Les Planches, a little bit higher (yet you will probably need less than 10 minutes to reach the Lake).

I'd recommend visiting Vienna in September or May I feel like those are the best months to visit since it's not too hot and not too cold! I'd also recommend to travel with public transport since it is the easiest, fastest and cheapest way to travel in Vienna!
