Vienna in 5 days (spring - fall edition)

Vienna in 5 days (spring - fall edition)

Clara Herdics
Vienna is one of the most beautiful and historical cities in Europe. I absolutely love visiting Vienna so I'd like to share my must-go places with you! We're going to talk about: ________________________________________ ° Places you could stay at ° How to travel to Europe ° Day 1 - Day 5 in Vienna ________________________________________ I'm going to add all the links for the hotels you could possibly stay at, restaurants and the tickets you can buy for museums and other attractions I've mentioned in this 5 day itinerary. I've visited Vienna 4 times. Once a year since I could travel by myself. I'd recommend visiting Vienna in September or May I feel like those are the best months to visit since it's not too hot and not too cold! I'd also recommend to travel with public transport since it is the easiest, fastest and cheapest way to travel in Vienna!

Where to stay

Grand Ferdinand Vienna

The Grand Ferdinand hotel is in the center of Vienna so most of the places i'm going to show you in this city guide are very close to the hotel.

Hotel Grand Ferdinand Vienna
@claraherdics
This was one of the most beautiful hotels I've ever been to. It is definitely on the more expensive site but besides the hotel being absolutely modern and gorgeous it is also in the city center. It's about 5 minutes away from the famous "Stefans Dom" and the next subway station. It's also close (about 10 min walking) to the "Mariahilfer-Straße" and the "Naschmarkt" which we're going to talk about a little later.

Hotel Urania:

I absolutely loved this Hotel. It is a Theme-Hotel so you can pick a room with a specific theme. What I really loved about this hotel was that you can book a room with a whirlpool which is just great and romantic for couples traveling to Vienna.

Hotel Urania Vienna
@claraherdics
The Urania Hotel is not as close to the center as the Grand Ferdinand but is cheaper. It's close to the Prater which we're going to talk about as well and since the subway system is great and cheap it's very easy to get everywhere even if you're not staying at the city center.

How to travel to Vienna:

ÖBB European Train System

If you're from Europe I would recommend to travel by train. I feel like it is the easiest and most convenient way of travelling especially in Europe. I would recommend to buy the tickets on the ÖBB web page and to reserve a seat. Also I'd recommend buying a 5 day pass for the subway. I added the ticket down below.

Day one in Vienna

Depending where you're visiting from you're probably going to be tired on the first day.  So what I would do is to go to the hotel check in and rest for a little bit. Afterwards, I'd look for a restaurant close to the hotel to get some dinner there. Depending, on what you're in the mood for there are all kinds of restaurants close to both hotels.

Day two in Vienna

Morning

My boyfriend and I never added breakfast to our hotel reservations instead we always got our breakfast and coffee from the bakery called "Der Mann der verwöhnt". I'm going to tell you that this was the best bakery I ever went to. My parents are both bakers so I'm not going to tell them but this bakery has the best cinnamon rolls ever. They are a must-try when you're visiting Vienna and they do have many locations in Vienna so no matter where you're staying you'll probably find one close by!

DerMann, der verwöhnt
@claraherdics
So this one is close to the Grand Ferdinand Hotel. It's about 10 minutes (walking) away.

Afternoon

Since you're already at the "Naschmarkt" I'd recommend you to just go look around at the market. I love the Naschmarkt because they have a lot of local things and it's also great for souvenirs. If you are ready for lunch you could also look for a place to eat there since they have many great restaurants.

Naschmarkt
@claraherdics
My boyfriend and I used to go there to get breakfast and depending on where we spent the afternoon we also ate dinner there. The Naschmarkt has many restaurants and all kinds of fresh groceries or souvenirs.

Afterwards I would recommend to visit the Mariahilfer-Straße. It's the most famous street in Vienna. There are tons of shops for all the people who love shopping this is the street for you. It's a very long street so I'd recommend planning the whole afternoon for this.

Mariahilfer Straße
@claraherdics
No matter what you're looking for you're going to find it on the Mariahilfer - street. Clothes, shoes, coffee, restaurants and much more. So for all the shopping lovers out there this is a must-visit place.

Evening

For tonight's dinner I'd recommend to stop at the Naschmarkt on the way back and try out the Asian restaurant called Yumi Dim Sum Teppanyaki. I would recommend "the crispy duck noodles" menu. They are absolutely delicious and come with a soup and some sushi and maki.

Yumi Dim Sum Teppanyaki
@claraherdics
In my opinion this is the best Asian restaurant in Vienna and is a must-try while visiting.

Day three in Vienna

Morning

Starting the day at the bakery of the Naschmarkt again I'd recommend to stop at the "Stephansdom" on your way back to the hotel. You can go inside and look at the stores that are close.

St. Stephen's Cathedral
@claraherdics
The St. Stephens Cathedral is the highest church in Austria. You can visit most parts for free but if you want to see the whole church and go all the way up to the tower you can book a tour.

Afternoon

Today I would recommend to go to the subway station and get a ticket for the days you're staying. I think they have day, week or month passes. There's a map in every subway and it is very easy to read. For all the people who've been to New York this i A LOT easier! :) So today we're visiting the castle of Schönbrunn.

Besides, the castle being beautiful on the outside it also has a very interesting history on the inside. You can visit the garden for free but you have to pay a ticket to visit the inside of the castle. If you're not really interested in history or traveling with kids I'd recommend the Schönbrunn Zoo. It is the biggest Zoo in Austria and it is a must see while visiting Vienna. If you have time you could even do both.

Schönbrunn Palace
@claraherdics
The historical castle Schönbrunn, the home of emperor Franz and Sissi with a very interesting history.

Schönbrunner Tiergarten
@claraherdics
Tiergarten Schönbrunn is the biggest zoo in Austria. It's a lot of fun to go there especially with kids but also as a couple or by yourself

Evening

I'm sure there are many good restaurants close to the castle of Schönbrunn and if you're very hungry I'd recommend to look for a restaurant close by and eat a Wiener Schnitzel. If not I'd recommend going back to the Naschmarkt and try out the "zur eisernen Zeit" and eat a real Wiener Schnitzel.

Zur eisernen Zeit
@claraherdics
If you'd like to try out some Austrian food I'd recommend this place. Being honest I've never been there but every time I went to my favorite Asian place at the Naschmarkt this place was crowded and it also has a very good google review.

Day four in Vienna

Morning

Starting the day at a bakery of your choice I'd recommend to go see the Donauinsel today. After breakfast I'd check out the subway map and figure out how to get there. If you're staying at the Urania you can also walk there or rent a scooter. If you want to be a little lazy today you can make a picknick there and just enjoy the view or walk around and check out all the different sights. If you're there I'd also check out the Donauturm where you have the best sight over Vienna.

Donauinsel
@claraherdics
The "Donauinsel" is the place where some of the most famous Austrian events are happening every year. It's really nice to just sit there and enjoy the water but if you want to be more active there are some water sports you could do down there or just rent a bike and ride around

Afternoon/Evening

This afternoon we're going to visit the "Wiener Prater". It is an amusement park that is a lot of fun. For all the people that want to try something crazy go on a ride on the "Black Mamba". I did it once and I'm not going to do it again but for all the people that need an adrenaline kick this is the right roller coaster for you! The ferris wheel is for all the people that want to enjoy the beautiful view over Vienna. My boyfriend and I did it once while watching the sunset and this was one of the most beautiful experiences I've ever had.

Prater
@claraherdics
It's so much fun for people all ages. I think it has something special when you are going in the evening and it's dark. It's also for free. You only have to pay for the roller coasters you want to ride and they are about 5-10 Euro

Day five in Vienna

Since, today is the last day in Vienna I'd recommend to eat breakfast or brunch wherever you'd like to. There are a lot of interesting places depending on where you're staying. Check out is at 10 or 11:00 o'clock most of the time so I'd recommend buying a train ticket around that time so you don't have to carry you're heavy luggage around. I'm going to add some brunch and breakfast places down below!!

Spazio Cafe
@claraherdics
A nice little coffee shop with great reviews for you're last morning!

If you'd like to see some more of Vienna I'd recommend to do an early breakfast and check out. I'd ask the people from the hotel if you could leave your luggage there and get it a little later. For today I'd recommend to go see the morning practice of the Spanish horse riding school. It does have a very interesting history and the horses are gorgeous.

Spanish Riding School
@claraherdics
This is a very nice experience if you're visiting Vienna. The horses are gorgeous and it is very interesting to see how they are training them. I added the tickets down below! :)

@claraherdics
For all the people that love art and history this is the right castle for you! It was built in 1724-1723. You can visit the museum and the garden of the castle.

Evening

If you still have time to go eat some dinner before returning back home either by train, plain, or car I'd recommend to spend one last evening at the Naschmarkt and try out the restaurant called "NENI". Everybody I know would absolutely recommend this restaurant and you could try some Austrian summer drinks like "Lillet Berry", "Aperol Spritz" or "Hugo before going back to the hotel to get your luggage and head back home or maybe to the next place you want to go visit!

NENI am Naschmarkt
@claraherdics
For everybody that likes to eat Vegan, Vegetarian or food with meat or fish. This is the right place and you're going to love it!!
