Wes Anderson vibes in Malmö, Sweden
Welcome!
If you're a cinema enthusiast, you probably know Wes Anderson: a renowned filmmaker celebrated for his vibrant and meticulously coordinated color palettes, creating nostalgic or "vintage" atmospheres.
Plan your trip
If this is your first time in Malmö or Sweden, you might be interested in the following facts:
- Sweden is on its way to becoming a cashless country, so instead of withdrawing money, I suggest ensuring your bank card allows you to make transactions without fees.
- The currency used is the Swedish Crown (also known as the Swedish Krona or SEK).
- Malmö ranks as the third largest city in Sweden and sits very close to Denmark; Copenhagen is just a 20 to 30-minute train ride away (across the Öresund bridge). This proximity makes Malmö an ideal day trip from Copenhagen, or vice versa.
- If you are coming by train, these places are all located between the Malmö C (Central Station) and Triangeln stops.
- Copenhagen Airport is the nearest international airport, making it convenient for travelers to reach Malmö. You can even catch the train directly from CPH airport.
- Located at the southern tip of Sweden, Malmö is situated in a region called as Scania (or Skåne in Swedish). It tends to be milder and less chilly compared to Stockholm ;-)
- All the places mentioned in this guide are centrally located, making them easily accessible on foot if you're up for it. Alternatively, you could consider purchasing a city bike pass for 24 or 72 hours from Malmö By Bike, or bus tickets through the Skånetrafiken app or terminals at train stations.
Now, let's dive into it!
Malmö's old town
Exploring Malmö's old town is like stepping into a picturesque setting straight out of a Wes Anderson film. Here, you'll encounter a plethora of absolute treasures that contribute to a highly graphical environment. While I've handpicked some of my favorite spots, don't hesitate to wander around and embark on your own exploration adventure.
St Knut District
St. Knut Square (Sankt Knuts Torg in Swedish) serves as the central hub of this district. From here, you can explore charming cafes, restaurants, and beautifully colored streets.
Davidshall
Davidshall is a truly unique neighborhood. Despite its central location, it exudes the charm of a small town, with slightly smaller and older buildings dotting its streets. Once again, vibrant and pastel colors dominate the scenery, adorning buildings housing shops, restaurants, and numerous flea markets.
Kungsgatan
Kungsgatan is a blend of a street and a park, stretching as a long avenue flanked by old buildings and abundant beautiful trees. Enjoy its tranquil ambiance, as people mostly bike or walk through it, and take the time to appreciate all the unique facades along your way.
