Galicia

The Galician weather is really unpredictable as I´ve learned. There should be more rainy and windy weather because it is in the north and by the Atlantic ocean. I was there during the winter semester (September - January). From September until the first half of October the weather was warm and sunny but then it rained 3 weeks straight🥲. I thought that this is the end of sunny weather but from the second half of November it was again mostly sunny but colder. Since February I´ve seen my friend´s stories on ig, who stayed there, and they were playing beach volleyball just in shorts and sweatshirts so I guess the weather´s been better and better.

Maybe, some of you could be discourage to go on Erasmus to Galicia because of the weather but trust me, it´s not that bad. The landscape is really green due to the rain and the nature is sooo beautiful. Moreover, the air is always fresh thanks to the ocean and rain😊.

A Coruña 🇪🇸

I chose this city because I wanted to be by the ocean, in a place where you can surf and somewhere sunny and warm. Plus Spain was suitable for me due to the Spanish language which I wanted to start learning.

The city is located in the north-west of Galicia and has around 250 000 inhabitants. It is not big but I liked that everything is in a walking distance. There is no underground, only buses. It has a historical lighthouse which are the locals really proud of and also the football stadium. It has a small airport on the outskirts of the city and a harbour.

Things to know before arrival:

 👉🏻A Coruna has an airport ✈️ but the flights are mostly cheaper to Santiago airport and then you can book a train or bus.

👉🏻Get your ESN card. ESN is an organization which coordinates Erasmus students, organizes trips, events and parties, and offers you a lot of discounts (Ryanair, Flixbus...).

👉🏻for trains 🚅 use Renfe app and book the tickets in advance, for buses use bus.gal

👉🏻BUS CARD 🚍 - get your bus card in the ABANCA bank and ride the bus for 0,38 euros. It is valid around the whole Galicia.

👉🏻Don´t be afraid if a bus is not at the bus stop in time. It´s normal that buses have delays. This is just Spain.

👉🏻If you want to bring a car to the city, remember that Spanish drivers are crazy and parking is even worse. A lot of cars are scratched.

👉🏻It is better to find an apartment 🏠because school accommodation is far and really expensive. Prices of apartments range between 150 - 300 euros.

👉🏻To sign a contract with a Spanish company, for instance wifi provider, almost in every case you need to have a Spanish bank account. You can open the account in ABANCA bank🏦 which is free of any charges. I have one, too.

What to see in the city?

Torre de Hércules
@lucieslivkova
I think that this is the best spot of A Coruña. If you search for the city on Google, Torre de Hercules will be the first picture you will see. It is located in the north behind the centre and surrounded by the ocean with waves crashing against the rocks. There are more places worth a visit nearby like Rosa dos Ventos, Playa das Lapas, Playa de San Amaro or Petroglifos de Punta Herminia. The tower is built in Romanian style with 234 stairs to reach the top. It is considered to be the oldest functioning lighthouse. People from A Coruña are really proud of it and maybe that´s why they decided to put it on their coat of arms. The ticket to enter the tower costs 3,50€ for adults. There is a discount for students, children and seniors.

Aquarium Finisterrae
@lucieslivkova
First, I wasn´t excited about it but than my friends convinced me to go with them and it was awesome! The aquarium isn´t that big but I loved it. There is a part of it which is designed like the famous submarine Nautilus. ⚓️ At the end there is a room that is made of glass all around so you see everything and it looks pretty in the photos. If you are lucky, you can see seals playing in the water outside. During the storm or when the wind is strong the ocean looks crazy and you can watch enormous waves hitting the rocks. The entrance fee is for Erasmus students only 4€ but if you have a university card, it´s free.

Monte de San Pedro 🌅
@lucieslivkova
Few minutes by bus behind the city is this park. This place is made for picnics and romantic walks. The best time to visit it is before sunset. You can see there big historical cannons but when I was there for the first time I thought those are just big bottles of beers.

You shouldn´t miss a chance to experience true Spanish football game. Football is really popular in Spain, especially in A Coruña. The whole city goes to see the game. Even if you are not a football fan like me, you must go see it.

Everything you need is right here. One of the biggest shopping centers in Spain. If you moving in you will probably need some furniture or kitchen equipment with you can find here in Ikea. If you are looking for neopren or other sport equipment - visit decathlon. If you wanna go shopping there are all stores, fast-foods and restaurants which you can remember. Also, there is a gym.

📍Santiago de Compostela
@lucieslivkova
Beautiful historical city in Galicia. You must visit the cathedral and the city centre. You can get there by train or you can walk the famous Camino de Santiago. I think the easiest way is to start from A Coruna which is only 75 km far from Santiago but if you are an exstremist you can choose even 3000 km option. Also, good think to know how to get there from A Coruna. It is either by bus (cca 75 minutes) or by train (cca 30 minutes). TIP: If you want to get to the airport, because most of the flights are way cheaper than flights to A Coruna, remember that by the airport bus it is a one-hour ride. It is better to take a taxi for 20 euros if you travel in a group.

Trips:

We, as Erasmus students, had some trips from ESN organization. Some of them were in Portugal or around the whole Spain and some of them were just in Galicia, which I mention here. The ESN trips were a great way to travel around Galicia for less money.

@lucieslivkova
I´ve never expected something like this will be in the north of Spain. It was absolutely amazing!🤩 The beach near the harbour was stunning but if you take a tour over the island you will find more beautiful smaller beaches. Also the nature is worth to see. On the top there is a lighthouse and the most beautiful view. ❗️However, watch for your food! The seagulls are really rude and they will try to steal your sandwich right from your hands.❗️

COSTA DA MORTE TRIP

Laxe
@lucieslivkova
The first stop on our trip was Laxe. It´s a town by the Costa da Morte. We visited its church Igrexa de Santa María da Atalaia. There is a legend about a ghost. Than we went to the Laxe beach next to the harbour. The ocean is calm so it is made right for a nice walk along the beach as you can see from the pictures.

This beach is a good spot for intermediete surfers. It is wide and long with some nice views on small hills around. There is a parking lot with benches and tables for people to have some place to stay with their van.

Muxía
@lucieslivkova
Muxía is a very pretty city. I would say that it looks exactly how I imagine the city by the coast of the north Spain. When we were there, it was raining but the rain gave it even better vibe. We visited Santuario da Virxe da Barca which is a church located on the north peak of Muxía. Near the church you can find Miradoiro Jesus Quintanal. A huge rock with a crack. The crack represents a ship that had a crack in the middle and than sank.

When you go behind down the stairs you will get to "The End of the World." It was really hard to get to the end of the cliff because of the strong wind but it was totally worth it. There is a pillar covered with various sticker so don´t forget to bring your own! On the west side of the lighthouse there is a beautiful sunset spot which was the best from the whole trip we went, in my opinion.

Cafés for studying

I couldn´t study at my apartment because when I saw my bed I just went for a nap so I started going to internet cafés. It really helped me with studying for my exams because I could focus and also grab a coffee or snack but it is important to buy something because nobody lets you sit there for 3 hours for free.

VAZVAR ❤️
@lucieslivkova
My favourite place to study. This cafeteria is located on Orzan beach right next to a surfshop. I would say the coffee and cakes are affordable but I mainly liked its style. The whole place is in a surf-beach style which I completely love and also they focus on ecology and protection of environment.

This place is really popular among the locals and from 8pm it is always full. You sure have to make a reservation. They have really good tapas and they are also really cheap. Clubs

Pelícano
@lucieslivkova
Well, what can I say about this place. Pelícano is the biggest and most popular club in the city. The parties there are crazyyy🤪. When you go to a club and later it closes - that means a direct way to Pelícano. Normal time we went there was around 3-4 am because we always went on after party but if you plan only Pelícano club that night you can come between midnight and 1 am to have cheaper entrance fee. The fee is around 15€ with two drinks included, depends on the event or time because there are so many people that you have to buy tickets in advance. If it´s too late, you can go to other clubs which are in the same building.
