What people say

"The Basilica of Santa María la Mayor is one of the jewels of Galician Gothic architecture. It is an example of Elizabethan Gothic style buildings. It was built in the 16th century by order of the fishermen's Gremio de Mareantes (sailors' guild). Its authors are João Noble and Cornelius da Holanda. It has been a minor basilica since 1962, the year in which it was granted this title by Pope John XXIII. The west facade, the work of C. da Holanda, was made in imitation of an altarpiece, with three profusely decorated bodies. On the south façade, an immense cross stands out, and the portal opens under a round arch, bordered with stone jamb and baroque ornaments. The interior consists of three naves separated by columns. The altarpiece of the Main Altar, made of chestnut and walnut wood, dates from the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, and is the work of an ebonist and sculptor from Santiago. To the left of the south door is the sculpture of Cristo del Buen Viaje, to whom devotees ask for protection on their journeys."
