Southern Spain Travel Wish List🎉
Andalucía
Andalucía is an autonomous community located in the south of Spain on the Costa del Sol, or "sunshine coast." Cities in the region include Almería, Cadíz, Córdoba, Granada, Huelva, Jaén, Málaga, and Sevilla.
Trainline is an international digital rail and coach technology platform providing free access to live train times and railway station information through its website and mobile app recommended by James Blick in his Spain Revealed video about high-speed trains.
Destination Cities
Our tentative plan is to fly from the U.S. to Madrid, then board a high-speed train for slow travel to 2 other cities. Not sure if we'll go to Alicante first, or visit Andalucía and then Alicante before returning to Madrid for the flight back to the U.S. Of course, there is the possibility of day trips to 1-2 other city locations as our schedule allows.
Here is the approximate travel time by high speed rail:
📍 Madrid to Alicante = 2.5 hours
📍 Alicante to Córdoba = 4.25 hours
📍 Madrid to Córdoba = 2 hours
📍 Córdoba to Granada = 2 hours
📍 Córdoba to Sevilla = 1 hour
📍 Córdoba to Cadiz = 2.75 hours (option for day trip from Sevilla to Cadiz = 1.75 hours)
Alicante
In Alicante, the tradition is not to prepare paella but rather what they call Arroz (it means rice). The dish is similar to paella - it is done in the same wide and short pan - but prepared slightly differently.
The main Arroz variant will remind similar to paella where you can have arroz con marisco, arroz mixto, arroz mixto (vegetables and meat), arrod de verdura (with vegetables which is vegetarian and vegan)… but you can also try things such as arroz con costra, olleta alicantina (rice in a soap), arroz a banda, Caldero (if you go to Tabarca) and others.
Other foods to try in Alicante:
~ Coca de Mollitas (pastry made of flour, white wine and EVOO)
~ Coca Antoñina (pastry filled with fish, onion, parsley, anise, and EVOO)
~ Churros con chocolate in Chocolateria Valor
~ Cocas de verduras/de atun y cebolla/sardina salada
~ Empanadillas de pisto/atun
~ Mona de Pascua (in Easter - sweet yeast bread adorned with egg and sugar)
~ Turrones (Christmas - nougat confection)
