What people say

"The project for the Central Market of Cadiz was the work of Torcuato Bejumeda, who proposed a neoclassical square enclosed by a Doric portico, located on the grounds of the Descalzos convent, today Plaza de la Libertad, expropriated in the 1830s. The historic market located in Plaza de la Libertad was inaugurated in 1838 and renovations began in just over a century. In 1928, the complex was restructured, promoted by Mayor Ramón de Carranza, thanks to which the pavilion that occupied the central space was built. In October 2009, the Central Market reopened its doors after three years of extensive renovation. The market, after the renovation, which has preserved the original design of the complex, has 57 fruit and vegetable stalls, 54 fish, crustaceans and molluscs, 44 meat stalls, 7 frozen food stalls, 4 bread and pastries stalls, 1 olive stall, 1 bag and paper stall, 1 fishing stall and a cafeteria on the first floor. In addition, every day of the week there is a Gastronomic Corner, a place where you can taste typical products from the Gaditana, national and international cuisine. The rehabilitation of the Lonja gaditana offers luminosity and functionality to a building rich in history, from which you can admire the houses and the viewing towers, for a better integration into the city."
