What people say

"In 1737, the Hospitaller Order of Saint John of God ordered the construction of a basilica to house the mortal remains of the saint. In the middle of the century, this large baroque church with a Latin cross plan was built on San Juan de Dios Street. The interior of the temple is richly decorated with polychrome wood, sculptures of saints and a predominance of gold. The imposing main altarpiece located behind the altar, decorated in gold and with an image of Our Lady in the center, is striking. During your visit to the Basilica of Saint John of God, you can visit the different parts of the church, such as the offices and the sacristy. The most interesting part of visiting the basilica is seeing the remains of Saint John of God. In the main nave of the church is the tomb of the saint, surrounded by candles, flowers and allusions to the patron saint of the sick. In the upper part of the basilica, there is a small chapel behind the altar (camarín) that houses the saint's personal objects. In a solid silver urn you can see the wooden cross that Saint John of God always carried with him, the saint's molars and other small parts of his body recovered for his veneration. The dome and walls of the room are decorated with figures of angels and paintings about the life of the saint. A truly memorable visit."
"Known as "Granada's best kept secret", the Basilica de San Juan de Dios is an opulent marvel. The 18th-century basilica is dedicated to San Juan de Dios - a man who donated all his riches to help the less fortunate receive healthcare."
