London - big city, big choices

London - big city, big choices

Laura Dehelean
An extra-full guide on where to wine&dine in central London and beyond (no matter the 💷: from low budgets to gold/platinum card holders 😄). And the list is big because…this is the most exhilarating city I have ever visited! I bet you will find your favorites among mine! London is heaven for foodies simply because it has something for everyone…you just have to know where to go and what to look after! Going further than the traditional British meals or beverages, one could taste various cuisines from all over the world: India, China, Japan, Italy, Spain, etc. I have included several places with such different menus. 💡Tip! Be advised that many restaurants offer tasting menus or happy hours so you have to check their websites or FB/IG accounts to find out how you could easily afford a great culinary experience. Highlights: 🫖 English breakfast tea - it is actually a blend of various kinds of black tea; is meant to be had with milk and sugar although it can be served without either. 🥓 Full English Breakfast - this usually includes: bacon, sausages, eggs, baked beans, toast, mushrooms, tomatoes, hash browns and black puddings. 🥧 British Pies - from fish to cheese and onion to minced beef or steak, savory pies are a British tradition that’s been around for centuries. By far, some of the most popular pies are the Shepherd’s Pie/Cottage Pie and the British Mushroom and Chicken Pie. 🐟 Fish & chips - this dish is a must try whilst you are in the UK; no matter where you are, you’ll be able to find a delicious plate of fish and chips (look out for anything called Chippy - they are the best).

DINING & DRINKING

If you're on a budget, you'll be happy to hear that London is where you'll encounter many street food festivals or markets, no matter the weather, with enough stalls to appease one's hunger at acceptable prices. Another option - which is my favourite - is the concept of a food hall, such as Mercato Mayfair, Seven Dials, etc. which offers not only food & drinks but also music & entertainment and a good vibe to enjoy by yourself or with whomever.

Mercato Mayfair
@lauradehel
This is a beautiful food hall inside a Cathedral - dinning and drinking here makes for a great experience. Which one are you going for? @mercatometropolitano Mayfair is a stunning indoor food hall with multiple vendors

Coffee, breakfast/brunch and desserts ☕️🍳🧁

Booking a table or taking something to go, you'll always have various options here:

- you could go for a speciality coffee shop, whether you're a connaisseur or not;

- you could go to one of the many high end places like The Wolseley or Prada Cafe;

- you could also try the small and cute venues, very Instagrammable, that mainly sell desserts/cakes but also serve tea and decent coffee;

- and of course, you could opt for a traditional English breakfast or an abundant brunch in any pub or terrace around the city.

Small place in China Town - tried out the Strawberry Pistachio Souffle at £7 (a fluffy pancake which was absolutely delicious) and a Mango Grapefruit Sago in Coconut Juice at £3.90 (which was an odd drink - fruit juice&fruit chunks combined with vegetable milk - a bit too sweet and not refreshing enough in my opinion).

Sun Street Hotel
@lauradehel
Inside @sunstreetlondon, there's a beautiful dining area called the Orangery where you can have brunch. It's so pretty and feels a bit like a greenhouse because of the plants and the glass ceiling. They do two courses for £25 or 3 for £35! Try out: - Popcorn shrimp - Sweetcorn fritters - Chicken rendang burger - Fluffy pancakes The food is really tasty here and flavoursome - even though the portions are definitely on the smaller side, they're quite filling. A highlight for me was the fluffy pancakes which are quite thick and cakey! You can also add on bottomless champagne! This brunch runs on weekends and you can book through Design My Night through the website!

Blakes Restaurant
@lauradehel
Blakes London. A sumptuous and romantic flight of fancy, the imagined world of designer Anouska Hempel, Blakes Restaurant is set in the subterranean depths of the boutique hotel that bears the same name. The décor is rich and decadent, part Chinese teahouse, part Oriental parlour, and the pan-Asian menu continues to delight with tantalising dishes like scallops with wasabi mash and tuna tartare. The guest list can be seriously A-list at times, so play it cool.

Noble Palace opened in early Summer 2022. The 70-cover restaurant in St James's Park and close to London Victoria serves a menu that draws on flavours and recipes from China's eight culinary regions - Anhui, Guangdong, Fujian, Hunan, Jiangsu, Shandong, Sichuan, and Zhejiang. Dishes will include braised Scottish lobster with udon and three Peking duck dishes: flambé roasted served with black truffle pancakes; with Beluga caviar or stuffed with abalone.

Bar Lina
@lauradehel
This bar is tucked away inside @linastores deli in Soho - one of London's newest and sexiest speakeasy. You need to try their signature drink BASILICO and FIGLET if you're a fan of figs (they use a homemade fig liquor which tasted like the liquid fruit).

The Cockpit
@lauradehel
Snapping up the taproom trophy for the City of London is The Cockpit. Aptly named after the age-old pastime that used to take place there, this Grade II listed spot serves up history and charm by the pint-load. Just a hop, skip and a jump away from the iconic St Paul’s Cathedral, this backstreet boozer stands on the site of a house once owned by none other than William Shakespeare – and dates all the way back to the 16th century. Serving up an array of different ales and some decent pub grub, and decorated with memorabilia from the pub’s past; a trip to The Cockpit is a real historic gem, slap-bang in the middle of the city.

Must do’s 🥇

Bacchanalia
@lauradehel
The interiors are truly breathtaking, with hand-painted murals, statues, mosaics, ancient Greek and Roman artwork but the food and the attentive staff is the real surprise. Everything is top notch and it feels like an incredible feast for the senses. The menu is Greco- Roman inspired and it is designed to be shared like an indulgent banqueting experience. A must visit!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Laura Dehelean
Hi! 🤗 I’m Laura - born and grown nearby the Romanian coasts of the Black Sea, in Constanta (a city with great history which I invite you all to visit and enjoy). This city and its surroundings, with beautiful, wide beaches have always drawn lots of tourists, thus… I have been working in the hospitality industry for quite a while now. Of course, I enjoy more being a tourist myself 😁(or perhaps…should I say “a traveler”?). In the past few years I have travelled across Europe (and most of its capitals and big cities) and found out many special places which I longed to share with others (it would have been a pity not being able to do so nowadays). So, thanks to Thatch I can provide some lists to help me and my friends out along our journeys - and, hopefully, other Thatchers as well. P.S.1 I am always open to suggestions or feedback on how to improve the info that I’m sharing. P.S.2 I am passionate about my shopping, therefore all my guides shall always include shopping venues that mainly sell authentic brands - bespoke souvenirs are what we want to take home with us, right? P.S.3 My guides shall always include many venues/places because I like options. Personally, I wouldn’t cross half a city just to get to a specific restaurant…after a long day, in particular, I would rather find a good spot close to the hotel that I’m staying at (or somewhere in that area). Moreover, different trips in the same city could target a totally different area and wouldn’t it be nice to explore its best by knowing all the variety of services/products available around?
