Here is a great 5-day guide for adding on Machu Picchu and the highights of Cusco. You can design a trip to the Cusco area OR consider this an add-on to a larger trip in South America. We did this trip as a pre-cruise back in 2019.
Included in this guide is a detailed day-by-day itinerary with tours as well as hotel and restaurant recommendations based on budget.
Hotel options and restaurant recommendations are listed at the end of the itinerary.

🏯 Japan's Machu Picchu, or "the castle in the sky" is located just north of the big cities of Kobe city and Himeji city in Hyogo Prefecture. A great detour to explore the countrysides of Kansai!
This trip may need some time and some advance planning, so let me be your guide (with tons of tips & advice) through this process!

Planning a trip on your own can be overwhelming, right?
That's where I come in. We'll hop on a call together, and you can pick my brain about anything and everything travel related. Want to know my favorite wine regions? Best time to go? How long to visit? Best countries for kids? I am here it's your time, so we can cover whatever you like.
Having visited 55 countries, people always ask me what place is my favorite? Well, it depends. A better question, I think is where would I like to visit for the first time again? Probably, Ankgor Wat or Machu Picchu or the Whitsundays. But, I loved living in Italy, Portugal and Thailand. Being in one places for months or a year allows you to really get to be a traveler and not a visitor.
What places would I revisit - all of them!
Earth is a big place, there’s so much to see. And I would certainly do things differently now with a family and a 4 year old than I did when I was nomading.
What traps for the unwary have I learned?
- Visa, scrambling to find WiFi that works at the airport because I didn’t pay a fee to enter Argentina
- Visa, having a typo on my birthdate and almost being denied enter
- 6 month experiation period for passports - literally had an airline agent in a lounge tear up my boarding pass in front of me

How good do I really know Peru and why does that make this a great product? I spent 6 months in Peru for an internship. After 2 months my parents flew over to travel around Peru with me. This way we could spend Christmas and New Year’s together and my parents had their first unforgettable trip outside of Europe. Here is a complete Peru itinerary that includes all the amazing stops that the country is famous for!

💪This is a travel guide to the ecotourism scene in the Cusco province in Peru. It's a great place for ecotourism, with several options, some affordable and others not so much. I did most of the activities myself, so I added all my experience and what I have learned about each place in this guide.
🏞️ This guide shows an active but cultural side of Peru, where your adventurous spirit will flourish as you explore the best Cusco has to offer. It will help you quickly identify the main activities and adventures available in the province.
✅ You will use this guide well if you are in Cusco and want to dive into the ecotourism scene in the province and be active while traveling. This guide is useful for those who enjoy doing activities by themselves. While most of the activities can be done with a tour agency, I did most of them by myself, so you will find recommendations for agencies only for the few activities where it is hard to do without an agency.
❌ You will not use this guide well if you are looking for recommendations for restaurants or hotel accommodations in Cusco. One section in this guide only provides recommendations for places where I ate and stayed in Cusco. However, it is not the focus of this guide; it only includes places where I had good experiences and want to recommend them to you.
💡You will find tips on arranging transportation, which tour agencies to contact if you prefer to tour with a group, and general tips about the activities. This guide will save you hours of research for activities in Cusco and give you a clear insight into what's available. After that, you need to book the tour with the recommended agency or do it yourself if you prefer.
💰 This travel guide is a once-in-a-lifetime purchase; I am continuously on the road, traveling and exploring new places. Whenever I uncover a new gem or get more information about a place I explored, I will add it here, and you will receive the updates automatically at no extra cost.
🍲 Most of the time, I brought food with me on my adventures, but in some, I found great restaurants in Cusco. One section of the guide covers all my recommendations to you.
📕I run a travel blog (https://helpmezuka.com/) where I write about ecotourism and tips for travelers about the destinations I uncovered in my journey. If I covered one adventure in this guide, you will find a link to the blog post where you can find complementary information about it.
🛄 Are you ready to be the next Cusqueño/a EcoTourist? Embark on this journey and let this guide help you uncover the best of the ecotourism scene in Cusco.
