I KNOW this is a hot take, and I swear I love Germany with all my heart, but Belgium has the best beer hands down. Not to mention the frites (fries), the chocolate, and the waffles. I have been to many a European city and my tastebuds were happiest in Belgium by far. As an ode to the country (and hopefully as a way to convince you to add Belgium to your next trip), I've created this guide of some of my favorite bars & restaurants I tried throughout the country!
For my plant-based besties out there: Many of these places offer vegan options. Some of them are 100% vegetarian or vegan, or have a separate menu catering to those diets. I always struggle when traveling to places with very meat-heavy traditional cuisine because I want to participate in the culture while honoring my diet. Belgium was one of the BEST countries when it came to catering to my needs. Not only did they offer plant-based food, I was able to find plant-based versions of the traditional food (this is really hard sometimes!). You can enjoy the local flavor guilt-free!
This guide includes places in Brussels, Ghent, & Antwerp.

Brussels: A city of contrasts, where the old and new harmonize, and the vibrant energy of its streets paints a kaleidoscope of experiences waiting to be explored!
Do explore day trips to Ghent & Brugge.
When it comes to cuisine, Belgium is famous for: cheese, mussels, rabbit stew, chocolate, waffles, fries, and boterhammen or tartines.
Btw - Brussels has more chocolate shops per square foot than any other city!!!

It includes an interactive map, over 60 city stops and things to do, 25 places to eat and drink, and more in the form of 5-6 days itinerary! Interested in visiting Brussels but eager to get away from overly touristy places? Antwerp's the place for you, baby. Flemish people love this authentic gem and often go for day trips to shop and get inspired by its rich history and culinary hotspots. In this itinerary I've bundled when to go, where to go, and how to go. Carefully curated for you by a local. This city trip skips overrated tourist traps and lays out a step-by-step weekend like the locals.
🚉✈️ How long is this trip?
This itinerary is based on a three-day weekend, assuming you'll arrive on Friday evening and depart on Sunday. You can absolutely adapt this plan to a two-day stay, just make sure to read the advice I provide with my recommendations. This way you're in on best times for different activities.
🅰️ Why Antwerp?
- historic port city with rich history
- hotspot for gastronomic delights and lavish art
- like Brussels, but without the tourist traps
- home to one of the world's leading fashion academies and the internationally renowned Fashion Museum
- authentic Flemish (European) experience
- safe city (check out advice for female solo travelers below)

In this guide, I'll share with you all the budget hostels I stayed at around the world and my honest opinion about them.
Most of my travels I did as a solo female traveller. And hostels were often the best option - cheap, safe, great places to meet another traveller.
