Self-guided Brussels Tour
The 1-st Day Plan in Brussels
Let's kick off your Brussels adventure by diving into the heart of the city's historic center, where centuries-old architecture meets vibrant street life.
Here are some top picks for your first day in Brussels, prioritized based on the experiences you won't want to miss! Since our plan for the day is to explore outdoors, it's a good idea to glance at the weather forecast beforehand.
Our first destination is the Porte de Hal - located just a few minutes on foot from Brussels South/Midi Train Station and near the Charleroi Airport Shuttle.
This impressive structure was built between 1357 and 1383. By the 17th century, the Halle Gate had taken on multiple roles beyond its original defensive and customs purposes. It served as a military prison and later as a civil prison for the city.
In 1782, Austrian Emperor Joseph II decreed the removal of city walls. This process was completed during Napoleon's reign, as he transformed the former wall area into a ring of boulevards. Interestingly, the Halle Gate was spared from demolition due to its role as a prison, allowing us to appreciate this historical gem today.
