Lesser Known (But Equally Stunning) Waterfalls in Iceland
Deleted User
Iceland is known for its many waterfalls, in fact, there are over 10.000 on the island. Most people head for Gullfoss, Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss, this map helps you to escape the crowds and includes 10 of the lesser known but equally beautiful waterfalls Iceland has to offer.

Brúarfoss
@deleteduser4294966424
Brú is the Icelandic word for bridge. Legend has it that there was once a natural stone arch over the river, after which the waterfall was named. There's a well-marked trail (about 3km long) that leads directly from the car park to the waterfall.

Urriðafoss

Right on the Ring Road, but often overlooked. Be sure to stop here on your way to Selfoss. Urriðafoss has the highest average flow of any waterfall in Iceland and the second highest in Europe.

Gluggafoss (Merkjárfoss)
@deleteduser4294966424
Gluggafoss is a lesser known gem in the south of Iceland, it's easy to reach by car and with a bit of luck you'll have it all to yourself.

The 'Canyon Dweller' is just a few metres from the famous Seljalandsfoss. It's hidden in a gorge and is about 40m high - you'll get a bit wet so make sure you bring your waterproofs.

Systrafoss
@deleteduser4294966424
Systrafoss is unique in its shape, consisting of two parallel cascading streams of similar height. You can walk all the way to the top to see the lake that feeds the waterfall (Systravatn) and enjoy a breathtaking view over the whole valley, or you can admire it from below and walk through the small forest at the foot of the mountain.

Nykurhylsfoss (Sveinsstekksfoss)
@deleteduser4294966424
If you're travelling through the Eastfjords, be sure to stop here - Sveinstekksfoss is only about 15km north of Djúpivogur. The waterfall is surrounded by mountains with layered basalt formations covered with moss, the black and green contrast with the water makes it a perfect photo spot.

Folaldafoss
@deleteduser4294966424
It drops about 20m against the most beautiful scenery. Chances are you'll be the only one here, as Folaldafoss is located on the infamous Öxi Pass, a dirt shortcut through the Eastfjords that is much less frequented than the Ring Road.

Hengifoss
@deleteduser4294966424
It takes some effort to get here, but you'll be rewarded with one of the most breathtaking waterfalls in Iceland. The trail is well marked and it takes about an hour to get there (about 4.5km one way). At 118m, it's the third highest waterfall in Iceland and stands out from all the others with a stunning pattern of alternating red clay and black basalt.

Aldeyjarfoss
@deleteduser4294966424
If I had to choose my favourite waterfall in Iceland, this would be it. Aldeyjarfoss falls into a narrow canyon framed by twisted basalt columns and surrounded by desolate landscapes at the end of Bárðardalur in northern Iceland. A prime photo location that will take your breath away.

Hraunfossar
@deleteduser4294966424
Hraunfossar, the lava falls, are a series of waterfalls in western Iceland near Reykholt. The area around the falls was once the site of constant eruptions, creating many caves hidden in the lava fields, the most famous being Víðgelmir.
