" Hraunfossar means "lava falls" in Icelandic as you can see - it's a long wall of water cascading over moss covered lava, falling into bright turquoise water! The falls covers about 900 meters/2950 feet, so it's quite a sight. The falling water comes from the nearby glacier Langjökull and falls into the Hvítá river (just upstream from Gullfoss! Time: 30 minutes Rating: 4/5 Crowds: few-moderate Vehicle: all accessible Parking: medium sized lot - free to park Amenities: toilets, cafe Seasonal: my favorite time to visit is autumn - the colors against the turquoise water is so beautiful! For the winter I recommend crampons because the paths get very slippery. Pro-tip: don't miss the neighboring waterfall called Barnafoss, just follow the path further back! More info: the color of the water can change depending on glacial melting."

"Hraunfossar (Lava Falls) is a series of waterfalls that flows out of Hallmundarhraun, a lava field near Langjökull (Iceland's second-largest glacier). Its crystal-clear water continues down the Hvítá river before dropping into Gullfoss. There are paths, hidden caves, and a viewing platform around the waterfalls. Another waterfall, Barnafoss, is within walking distance (just a half-mile loop) while you're here. Plus there's a café for lunch and warm beverages. "
"Hraunfossar ('Lava Falls' in English) is a cluster of beautiful waterfalls that flow into the Hallmundarhraun lava field. The glacier Langjökull is also visible from this site and this lava field is a construction from one of the volcanoes lying under the glacier. You can have a great viewpoint of the waterfalls from the parking lot, but I encourage getting out of your van and exploring the pedestrian bridges."

Active volcanoes. Dancing northern lights. Gushing geysers. Massive glaciers. Thermal hot springs. Thundering waterfalls. Iceland is the ultimate adventure destination. How have you not been here yet? It’s finally time. Start in the northernmost capital in the world. Reykjavik is a hip, modern city. Then start exploring the wild coastline, the sheep-filled countryside, the icy interior, and the peaceful islands. There are plenty of black-sand beaches, small fishing villages, turf-roofed houses, and epic hikes along the way. Just remember to pack layers. Sometimes, the Gulf Stream provides moderate temperatures. Other times, it’ll feel like you’re in the Arctic. Also don’t forget the long, dark winters and the 24-hour daylight during the short summers. If you take advantage of Icelandair’s free stopover program—a great excuse to visit Helsinki, Copenhagen, and even Paris—you can keep returning to discover which season you like best.
