" About: Hengifoss is Iceland‘s third highest waterfall, 128 meters high. Hengifoss is particularly beautiful because there are layers of red and brown rock surrounding the waterfall in a horseshoe shape. Time: 30 minutes drive from Egilsstadir/main road + 2-3 hours round trip hike Rating: 4/5 Crowds: few-moderate Vehicle: The road to is accessible all year, but could be more challenging in the winter. Parking: medium sized lot - free to park Seasonal: Hike could be challenging in the winter. Would have to check trail conditions at the time. Amenities: toilets on site Pro-tip: from the middle of the hike gives you beautiful views over Lagarfljot More info: halfway up the hike you pass Litlanessfoss - a smaller but equally impressive waterfall."

"Hengifoss is an absolutely gorgeous, tall waterfall at the midpoint of the Litlanesfoss/Hengifoss loop trail. When you reach the waterfall you will walk about 150 yards over a rocky path which will take you up directly to the waterfall. You will have incredible views of the pool, and the waterfall above, and can even walk behind it. The Hengifoss food truck that the bottom of the loop has some delicious traditional Icelandic lamb soup and bread, along with rhubarb soda and goat milk ice cream! It's pricey (this is Iceland) but hit the spot after the hike. Cost: Free unless you order something from the Hengifoss food truck! Parking: Free parking + bathrooms "

"This was a really cool hike. Both Hengifoss & Litlanesfoss are on this trail. One of them has really cool basalt columns around it. The second one has this crazy red tint to the rocks around it. It was bigger than we anticipated, and the hike was a bit steeper than we anticipated also. We recommend allocating about 1.5-2 hours for this hike. Depending on how far you go, it’s around 3 miles round trip. We highly recommend wearing hiking shoes with good traction for this hike or using poles if you need them since it is slippery rock. Photo Tip: Fly your drone here! It's an awesome way to get a cool perpsective of all the striations in the rock on camera."
