Hike several of the most famous trails in New Zealand with this custom route that combines Great Walks of Rees-Dart and Routeburn with some lesser-known hidden gems like Cascade Saddle, Earnslaw Burn, and Greenstone/Caples. This trek showcases the diverse landscape of New Zealand's South Island, from serene valleys and ancient glaciers to rugged alpine mountain passes and through low altitude temperate rain forests. The route is split into 7 flexible stages that can be done in 7-14 days and is written for those seeking to (wild) camp and who prefer to stay in huts along the way. The route includes some off-trail sections to some of the most secluded and beautiful landscapes of New Zealand, but also provides alternatives to avoid these sections of bushwhacking. This guide includes the route as seen in my YouTube film and provides all the additional information about all the huts along the way, wild camping regulations all along the trek, how to get there, when to go, the weather, and much more. What this guide includes: - A flexible itinerary for different lengths and difficulty levels; - Distances, best camping options, and other useful waypoints; - Custom Google Maps with all the important locations, such as campsites, grocery stores, airports, trails, public transport stops, and viewpoints; - GPX tracks of all the routes; - Practical information on how to get there, how to get around, when to go, trail conditions, weather, geography, and more; - Detailed descriptions of the trekking route, including landmarks, terrain, and elevation changes. Embark on this adventure to discover New Zealand's breathtaking landscapes, from alpine passes and serene lakes to lush valleys and dense rain forests. This guide promises to lead you through the heart of the South Island's untamed beauty, offering an unforgettable journey through its most majestic and wild spaces. Get ready to be captivated by the stunning vistas and unique experiences that await on this epic trek. Get an impression of the route on youtube.com/harmenhoek.

This is one of our favourite itineraries we have ever crafted as it truly packs in so much adventure whilst also allowing time to relax. Here you'll find 12 days of adventure in the South Island covering what to do, where to eat, where to stay, and insider information from our travels to these spots. Whilst the first two days are in hotels in Queenstown, the rest of this itinerary is by camper van and does include driving. We HIGHLY recommend doing New Zealand by campervan to reach & stay in some of the most stunning places. You can expect fjords, hiking, beaching, and adventure from this itinerary. This is for those who really want to get the most of out their 12 days on the South Island and covers the following regions: -> Queenstown (with day trips) -> Milford Sound -> Mt. Cook / Aoraki National Park (& surrounding towns) -> Lake Tekapo & Lake Pukaki -> Wanaka -> Dunedin -> The Catlins -> Arthurs Pass (with a quick stop in Christchurch & an option to change the itinerary OR make it a 14 day trip). PLUS so many more ideas on how to fill your days. Note: If you're interested in doing the North & the South Island of New Zealand, check out our three week itinerary on our Thatch page to both places to get the best value (it includes everything written in this itinerary).

This itinerary outlines nine days of continuous adventure on the North Island of New Zealand. Spend a couple days exploring Auckland and the nearby islands, head out west for some black sand beaches and secret coves, hit up some insane hiking trails, and head to the east coast for some stunning beaches that draw the local crowds all summer. This itinerary is partially in hotels, but most of it is geared towards campervanning or rooftop tenting it through the North Island (that's what we did & LOVED it). It also includes a few hours of driving a day, and quite a few hiking opportunities (of course these can be substituted for other activities in the area). If you don't want to drive as much you could always spread the activities over more days, or skip your least favourite part to spend more time in the other areas ... but good luck trying to choose! Each day outlines activities to fill your day, how much driving, what to eat, where to stay, and other suggestions / information. This itinerary covers the following specific places: -> Auckland -> Waiheke Island -> Hobbiton -> Marakopa -> New Plymouth (Mt Taranaki) -> Tongariro National Park -> Lake Taupo -> Coromandel Peninsula -> Coromandel Forest Park & so much more! Note: if you're interested in doing both North and South Island in one trip, you should definitely consider purchasing our 3 week itinerary (found on our thatch home page) as it includes all of this same information & everything on the South Island!
