California Gold Country holds an incredible amount of history, beautiful outdoor activities, alpine lakes, hiking, food, wine, & more. In my opinion, this section of Highway 49 is the best road trip in the West. The entire 49 is amazing, but in case you're short on time, this guide focuses on my favorite section of it. This guide holds everything you need for a 3-5 day trip in this region. It includes information on hikes, swimming spots, small towns, wine, food, history, accommodation, camping, and more. That amount of time will leave you space to have at least one full outdoors day, one full wine & food day, and some other activities in between. It's a great trip for someone like me who likes getting dirty & spending time outside and in the backcountry, but also likes really good food and some of the best wine California has to offer. There's something for everyone on this trip. You can walk on a dirt trail for an hour and a half, see wildflowers, swim, go wine tasting, learn about history, and more. This trip can be done any time of year. If you visit in the winter, you may want to sub out some skiing for swimming & some of the hikes might be inaccessible without snowshoes or XC skis. If you go in the middle of summer, it will be hot at lower elevations, but still amazing. Spring will give you some incredible wildflowers. ‌This area is less frequented & should be appreciated. It's a great trip if you're looking to escape the crowds. This trip can easily be done as an add-on to Lake Tahoe or Sacramento. Use this guide as a set itinerary, or draw from it to create your own trip!

My guide to backpacking Central America is finally here! This guide is based on hundreds of hours of research, my own 4 month long trip, and some extras that I wasn't able to get to but would still highly recommend based on reviews from trusted friends! This guide serves as an essential list of the best attractions in each country and what not to miss! The route in the guide is laid out North to South, starting in Belize and ending in Panama, but it can also be used in reverse. The guide includes information for how to get between locations; however not in great detail as the schedules and prices change frequently and let's be honest, the busses are never on time in Central America! The best way to get between places depends on your timeline and budget of your trip: if you have months to explore, take the local "chicken busses" for a more affordable and immersive experience; if you only have weeks, take the more direct shuttles; and if you're tight on time, take the more direct and upscale coaches. Whichever option you choose, the locals are always willing to help with chicken busses, and shuttle busses and coaches are very easy to book throughout Central America at your hostel, any tour operator, or online. Where possible, I included accommodation recommendations for places that I personally stayed at and can vouch for, or know someone who did. In addition, there are links for booking hostels in each region! I hope this guide provides some help and inspiration to backpack Central America, it's one of my absolute favourite places on Earth! Explore Iceland Ring Road in 5 days. More than 1800 km in less than a week might sound like a challenge when you are traveling with kids but with multiple exciting stops on the way and a good night sleep in between the complaints will be limited. Kids will especially enjoy the drive during the summer when you can see a lot of animals (mostly 🐑) during the whole drive.
