"Climbing Pacaya Volcano was a great day trip from Antigua. It was about an hour drive from the city. We took a tour which handled the transportation and then included a guide once we got there, though not the entry fee.
It’s a fairly intense hike up. It’s just like an hour of trekking uphill. I thought it was great exercise but lots of our group opted to ride horses up to the top. There’s many available there to take you up if you don’t want to hike.
Once you reach the top, you’ll see some steam coming from the rocks and can roast marshmallows in the hot spots. I’ve also heard they can cook pizzas in there, but for whatever reason they weren’t doing it when we visited.
We climbed the volcano in May, which is right at the beginning of the rainy season. So it was really cloudy the whole time and we didn’t get much of a view. It was still really cool though"

"Pacaya is another volcano, close to Guatemala City, besite Lago Amatitlan, but if you don't want to stay in the capital it is easy to find tours going direct from Antigua.
This hike is less challenging that the Acatenango hike."
