"Lupiae, this was the name of the Roman city of Lecce, between the 1st and 2nd centuries AD.This is why in Lecce we can admire the famous Roman Amphitheater and today it is the most important testimony of the Roman era.
In the past it could accommodate up to thirty thousand people who could spend their time attending the gladiatorial games and the city's theatrical activities.
Here you can also visit a small museum which houses many of the artefacts found during the excavations.

"The Amphitheater, unearthed in the early 20th century, reveals approximately one-third of the original structure, showcasing segments of the arena and cavea. The rest lies concealed, partly beneath the current square and partly beneath the structures housing the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, the Sedile (the Seat), and Renaissance-style buildings."
