Puglia Guide: Salento

Puglia Guide: Salento

Simona Mammoliti
Salento is the southernmost part of Puglia. It is the heel of the boot, and is situated between two seas: the Adriatic to the east and the Ionian to the west. You might have heard of places such as Lecce, Gallipoli, and Otranto, which are all cute towns found here! I’ve grown up spending all my summers with my family in Puglia, as half of my them are from here. Although we spend most of our time in Centrale Puglia we always make sure to enjoy at least a week in the Salento area. It has some of my favourite beaches, and I can't wait for you to discover them! From sandy shores with beach clubs to rocky coves perfect for cliff jumping and exploring, there's something for everyone. Over the years, I've fallen in love with the local foods and ingredients, and I'm super excited to share them with you in this guide. Think of this as your starter pack for all things you should experience when traveling in Salento. I'll share the hidden gems I've found, from tiny towns to stunning beaches, and of course, the best spots to eat and drink. Whether you're visiting for the first time or you're a seasoned traveler, this guide will help you make the most of your Salento adventure.

Lecce

Lecce is the largest city you will find in Salento and is best known for its baroque architecture. Some of its top attractions are the Basilica di Santa Croce, Piazza del Duomo, the Roman Amphitheatre and much more. If you are here in August, Lecce hosts a large music festival celebrating traditional Salento folk music and dance known as "la pizzica," this is an amazing cultural experience which I highly recommend. Lecce, and its surrounding area, has a delicious local cuisine with many must-try dishes. The ingredients they use are super fresh and locally grown. Below you will find suggestions of what to see and do, where to eat and foods to try!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Simona Mammoliti
Hiii! My name is Simona, and I am Canadian/Italian...I was born and raised in Toronto but half of my my family is from Puglia, so I have been lucky enough to spend every summer of my life in Puglia. I currently live in Milan and have spent the past few years exploring the nooks and crannies of Italy and other European destinations. I grew up with family restaurants in Toronto and Los Angeles and studied hospitality and tourism management...so you could say I have a bit of a passion for food and beverage. When I travel I am always looking for the best and most authentic spots to eat and drink at. Besides this, I love all things health and wellness related, cooking, meeting new people and experiencing high-end but authentic vacations!
