Eat your way through Copenhagen cafés

Eat your way through Copenhagen cafés

Copenhagen café culture is incredible, and I recently spent 2 weeks visiting at least one bakery or café each day. This guide includes 20+ locations across the city, and it will steer you in the direction of the the very best coffee, cardamom buns, and brunch boards all across the city.

Bakeries

Juno the bakery
@julia
Juno the Bakery is my personal favorite for pastries and bread. It happened to be in the neighborhood we stayed in, so we visited a few times. They offer a simple menu of bread, pastries, cookies, and filter coffee. (Note: Closed Mon/Tues.) Simple outdoor seating on their patio is available. You should expect a line, particularly on weekends, though it moves fast and is worth the wait. What to order: - Cardamom bun is a must - Every bakery offers a roll with butter and cheese, but Juno's is the very best. - Cookies for later

Hart Bageri
@julia
Hart Bageri is many people's Copenhagen favorite, with a head baker who's resume includes Copenhagen's Noma and San Francisco's Tartine. They offer a full pastry and coffee menu, with a couple of sandwiches on offer as well. While it wasn't my favorite bakery (I found both Juno and Andersen & Maillard pastries to be superior), it is certainly worth a stop on your Copenhagen bakery tour. Their Fredericksburg location is quite small, so it's best to grab-and-go. What to order: Sausage roll, chocolate chip cookie

I didn't visit this location, but it's quite close to one of my favorite Copenhagen shops (Ferm Living) and a walk along the canals and across the footbridge to Nyhavn.

This location is their newest, quite close to Copenhagen Contemporary Museum. It's a bigger footprint than their Fredericksburg location, and includes outdoor seating.

Bageriet Benji
@julia
Open Weds-Sun, this bakery is a convenient stop in Nørrebro. It's a simple storefront with a few seats outside. I didn't have a chance to taste their pastries, but it comes recommended by many.

Located in Islands Brygge, this bakery is a bit off the beaten path. It comes recommended by an expat friend who lives in the neighborhood, and says it's her favorite Copenhagen's bakery.

Cafés

Atelier September
@julia
Atelier September is one of those cafés that I wish I could export to my hometown. Whether it's pastries, coffee, or hot dishes like their omelette or pancake, you can't go wrong with anything on the menu. I visited several times, and nothing I sampled hit a wrong note. Both locations offer indoor and outdoor seating and a full menu. What to order: Green omelette, Kyoto-style fruit, Pancake with cream & jam

What to order: French omelette, Kyoto-style fruit, Yogurt & granola

studio x kitchen
@julia
I was scrolling around Google Maps, and discovered Studio X Kitchen as a "top rated" location. I cross-checked with Instagram, then decided to give it a try. Add this to the top of your must-visit café list after Atelier September. They offer a full café and coffee menu, with both indoor and outdoor seating. It's location close to Kongens Have and Strøget make it a perfect jumping off point to explore more of Copenhagen. What to order: Scrambled eggs, Apple cinnamon muffin (the porridge also looked like a work of art)

Wulff & Konstali Food Shop
@julia
Wulff & Konstali has multiple locations around the city, and they're known for their brunch boards. It's a meal where the sum is greater than any of the individual parts—in other words, the experience of their brunch board in full is better than any of the individual dishes. When compiling your board, avoid the pastries—rather, focus on eggs, salads, cheeses, and fruits. This location in Nørrebro offers both indoor and outdoor seating on a small plaza.

Lille Bakery
@julia
Open Weds-Sun, Lille Bakery is a lovely stop after visiting Copenhagen Contemporary. While they offer pastries, we opted for a sandwich and focaccia, both of which were excellent. Lille's outdoor patio is a *a vibe*—a real community gathering place, and was particularly lovely on a sunny afternoon. Located just a 5-minute walk from the ferry, it's a great stop to add to your Refshaleøen itinerary,

La Banchina
@julia
Many people told me that La Banchina is a must-visit, and I couldn't agree more. The menu here isn't necessarily the draw—rather, the environment is. On the face, it's a 14-seat waterfront restaurant and wine bar with an on-site sauna. Beyond that, they have an outdoor area with picnic tables and open seating on their dock, where on a warm day, guests are able to take a dip. I visited on a relaxed, cloudy morning, but dreamed of returning on a warm afternoon to enjoy a bottle of wine on the dock. Located in Refshaleøen, it's a stones throw from Copenhagen Contemporary, and is easy to access on the ferry.

Sonny
@julia
Sonny is a charming café in central Copenhagen that's bustling any day of the week. While it wasn't the best café meal we had, it was fun to people watch over brunch. They offer generous indoor and outdoor seating, and its central location makes it an easy stop as part of your Copenhagen itinerary. What to order: Simple breakfast, Banana bread
