Dog-Friendly, Christmas Guide to Prague
Dog-Friendly, Christmas Guide to Prague
The Points Plan
Prague is a beautiful city, full of rich history, beautiful architecture, and some of the best brews around. If you're heading this way around Christmas time, then we have a stocked guide for you! Prague is a very dog-friendly city. In fact it's more rare that our good boy was not allowed inside a pub or restaurant; and they are allowed on most public transit here as well!
During the Christmas season, things (very predictably) get a bit crowded, so it's always a good idea to make a reservation for the more popular attractions and restaurants. In fact, I would avoid the Christmas Markets altogether on weekends as it's a bit much, especially if you're bringing your dog with you.

Christmas Markets
Old Town Square
@thepointsplan
Full on touristy Christmas market. We found that there was definitely more food stands serving ham, sausage, mulled wine, hot chocolate, and chimney cakes than anything else. So arrive hungry and make sure you ask for exactly how much food you want in weight.
It was extremely crowded during the weekend, so I would recommend steering clear and coming back on a weekday.

Wenceslas Square
@thepointsplan
Dec 2, 2023 – Jan 6, 2024
Crowded, but pretty
"Wenceslas Square or "Václavák" (Vatz-la-vak), as the Czechs call it, is the main plaza of New Town.
In 1348, Bohemian King Charles IV founded the New Town of Prague. The plan included several open areas for markets, of which the second largest was the Koňský Trh -- or Horse Market.
It's more of a boulevard than a square, though in recent years the city planners keep pushing the cars further up the street and opening the bottom half for pedestrians. At the top of the square, you'll find the National Museum and good King Wenceslas on his horse. At the bottom, New Town's high street Na Přikopě.

The cutest, most idealic, little gingerbread shop I've ever seen. Were the cookies a bit overpriced, probably, but I don't even care. It was magical and there were very tasty.

Dog-friendly, hot chocolate connoisseurs. The menu was FULL of different and delicious varieties of hot chocolate. The staff was super friendly and gave our good boy a quick scratch behind the ears every time they passed. A welcome respite from the chilly and crowded Christmas Markets outside.

St. Vitus Cathedral
@thepointsplan
After visiting, I must admit that the Castle/ palace wasn't nearly as impressive as the Cathedral which was unbelievable. One of the most ornate cathedrals I've ever visited.
Maybe if we had taken a guided tour to hear some of the history and stories it would have been more interesting.

U Zlatého tygra
@thepointsplan
This bar is somewhat of an icon of Prague’s drinking culture, and it’s said to have housed tons of famous and influential figures from Prague’s history, from presidents to poets and actors to authors. You’ll feel like you’re part of something special, tucked away in Prague’s old town, sipping on a pilsner on a wooden bench under arches ceilings. U Zlatého Tygra means At the Golden Tiger, by the way.

U Sadu
@thepointsplan
This pub might not look like much at first glance, but trust us when we say it’s one of the city’s most characterful drinking establishments. Pivnice U Sadu, built in the 1920s, is located on a picturesque square, in a quiet part of Zizkov, and is a haven for beer lovers who like a bit of atmosphere with their pints. The place is deceptively massive inside, with a spacious area downstairs, as well as an old-fashioned bar upstairs (along with a Shrek pinball machine).

VELTLIN
@thepointsplan
This intimate Karlín wine bar isn’t limited to local wines, but you won’t find any bottles that have crossed an ocean here. The daily selection of natural vino poured each night comes exclusively from countries within the former Austro-Hungarian Empire. The friendly, multilingual staff are happy to chat about personal preferences and price points.

Kasárna Karlín
@thepointsplan
Kasarna Karlín isn’t just a bar, oh no. Formerly the barracks of the Czech Republic, this is now the centre of Prague’s social scene, showing outdoor film screenings in the summer and putting up a pop-up ice rink in the winter. A cafe, gallery, playground and cinema, this is a spot where there’s always something going on, from shows to DJ sets to live music (and more).

Dog Friendly AirBnB
@thepointsplan
This spot was a little outside of the main square, but easily accessible via dog-friendly tram and bus.
The airbnb itself was very spacious, warm and comfortable. There were plenty local restaurants nearby to choose from serving up local dishes at very reasonable prices. Three very good coffee shops within easy walking distance (one right next door) and a park about a block away that's perfect for taking your dog for a walk or a quick off-leash run if you trust them and they have good recall!

About $5 Day pass with plenty of equipment and weights to choose from. They even have a sauna and tanning bed. Bring an extra pair of shoes (you must change out of your street shoes upon entering).
