The Dead Sea (The Salt Sea and the lowest point on planet Earth)

A spectacular natural wonder the Dead Sea is perfect for religious tourism and fun in the sun with the family. With its mix of beach living and religious history you can soak up the sun while Biblical scholars can get their daily dose of religious history.

The leading attraction at the Dead Sea is the warm, soothing, super salty water itself – some ten times saltier than sea water, and rich in chloride salts of magnesium, sodium, potassium, bromine and several others. The unusually warm, incredibly buoyant and mineral-rich waters have attracted visitors since ancient times, including King Herod the Great and the beautiful Egyptian Queen, Cleopatra. All of whom have luxuriated in the Dead Sea’s rich, black, stimulating mud and floated effortlessly on their backs while soaking up the water’s healthy minerals along with the gently diffused rays of the Jordanian sun.

Dead Sea
@yolo
It is the lowest point on Earth at about 430 meters below sea level and continues to sink. The lake has no outlet, so water only leaves through evaporation, leading to a high concentration of salt and minerals, making it one of the saltiest bodies of water on Earth (over 30% salinity). Biblical & Historical Significance: The Dead Sea is mentioned in the Bible, most famously in the story of Sodom and Gomorrah. According to Genesis, these ancient cities were destroyed by fire and brimstone because of their wickedness. Many believe they were located near the Dead Sea. Some traditions associate the formation of the sea’s salt pillars (like the famous "Lot’s Wife" rock formation) with the story of Lot’s wife turning into a pillar of salt. It was a refuge for King David, a site for Herod the Great’s fortresses, and a key location for the Essenes, the Jewish sect that wrote the Dead Sea Scrolls, discovered in nearby Qumran.
