I've been to Greece many times and I've always kind of just "passed by" Athens on my way to the islands, if you know what I mean. But after spending nearly a week in Athens, I am hooked! It's such a fun and vibing city with so much great food and ambiance that you simply can't miss!

Okay, now that I convinced you to go to Athens (I hope).... Now what?

I know, I know, there's so many things to look into, but fear not! Let this guide be an introduction to all you need for your first trip to Athens!

💙Country code: +30

💙Time zone: GMT+02:00

💙Language: Greek but in most touristic places English can be used

💙Driving side: Driver on the left, keep to right

How to get around?

From the Airport to the city center (which is Syntagma Square)

There are a couple of ways to go/come from the airport to the city center:

1.  X95 bus -  (24 HOURS)  simply buy the ticket from the kiosk and then you are good to go. Price is 5.5euros for one way (September 2024).

2. Metro - (The metro only runs from 06:10-23:34ish.) Take the Metro blue line 3, as you can see from the map below. It is 9€ for one way and you can buy the ticket at the ticket vending machine. It takes around 40 minutes but make sure to leave ample time because sometimes you need to walk the longer way to use the elevator if you have luggage with you.

Metro

Personally, I just mainly walked everywhere (within the city center) because the main touristic spots are relatively close together. But of course, metros are very affordable (compared to other major European cities), which costs only 1,20€ for a single ride, which you can use up to 90 minutes from the first entrance.

There are some packaged transport card for tourists, which are discounted and you can find all the information here: https://www.athenacard.gr/komistra.dev

Uber

It's pretty simple and I think Uber is actually affordable compared to other major cities, especially if you have a late night out

Weather

Being a Mediterranean city, it's summer weather can be really high. I would say the best time to visit would be May to early June or September to early October. However, if you want to avoid the crowds, winter would be a good time!

Which area should I stay in?

Again, there is no right answer for this. I've met travelers from all over who stayed at different places. I personally stayed at Exarcheia neighborhood and I loved it! It's right near to National Archaeological Museum, has a lot of lovely restaurants and bars. Also, within walking distance to Lycabettus Hill. I also felt pretty safe because I can see polices patrolling in some corners.

You can also see this guide to find the most suitable area for you.

Money 💰

The official currency is Euro €. The locals appreciate if you could pay in cash, but credit cards are widely accepted, especially Visa and MasterCard.

Is the water drinkable?

Yes, in Athens, water is drinkable directly from the tap. Though, not on the islands.

Plugs and Voltage

Generally, they use Type C or Type F plugs, so make sure you have an adapter at hand if you are not from Europe! Standard voltage is 220 V, with a standard frequency of 50 Hz.

Internet

You can purchase SIM card right at the airport or any of the telecommunication companies in any city. Some big companies are Cosmote, Nova and Vodafone Greece.

If you want to keep your original number, you can also use e-sim, this is the one I use: Airalo. If it's your first time using this, you can use my code "CHLOE9659" for a $3 discount!

What to do? Some ideas...

1. The Acropolis Museum

This new museum has a great free audio guide accessing from the QR code. Also, a cafeteria with a great view of the acropolis but quite expensive.

3. Viewpoints of the Acropolis

Lycabettus Hill

You can opt to go up top with the cable car or walk up there! It's a steeper climb compared to Philopappos Hill.

Philopappos Hill
@chloeeeh
I personally recommend this hill because it is a super easy climb to the top! But might want to go with somebody at night. During the day, I felt okay.

2. Railbiking in the suburbs of Athens

@chloeeeh
It's a three hour ride on the abandoned tracks, but on a good day, it's an really enjoyable ride. You can make a reservation on the website below. Would recommend going to Megara by bus or by car. Train is not recommended.
