Best Skyline Views & Night Hikes

Korea’s cityscapes are mesmerizing at night, and there are plenty of spots where you can enjoy panoramic views.

Namsan Seoul Tower (N서울타워)

A classic must-visit. Take the cable car up or hike through Namsan Park for a breathtaking view of the entire city lit up at night.

N Seoul Tower
@melissaschwedhelm
Spring: Combine blossoms with breathtaking views of the city at Namsan Park. Whether you hike up or take the cable car, the journey is filled with cherry trees. The view from N Seoul Tower is even more spectacular with pink blossoms in the foreground. Why I Love It: The mix of nature and cityscapes makes every visit special, especially at sunset. If you enjoy hiking, I recommend hiking up to the N Seoul Tower either from Myeongdong Station Exit 3 towards the left of 7-11 convenience store, going straight and walking towards the right of Pacific Hotel, and walking uphill past the Cable Car Station, which takes about an hour and is a moderate walk. Another option is the Cable Car, which is ₩15,000 for a round-trip or there are some shuttle bus options (No 01A and No 01B) up to the tower. If you are budget travelling, there is already a great view on top of the mountain but if you want to up to the Observatory it will be ₩21,000. Best time to go up is shortly before sunset, so you can watch the lights slowly turning on throughout the city.

Jinju Lantern Festival 진주남강유등축제

This festival transforms the city into a vibrant tapestry of lights, history, and culture, making it a must-visit for anyone looking to experience the heart of Korean traditions. Historical Significance The origins of the Jinju Lantern Festival date back to 1592 during the Japanese invasion of Korea. Lanterns, or yudeung, were illuminated to prevent enemy troops from crossing the Namgang River and to communicate with families outside the fortress. Today, this tradition continues, symbolizing hope and remembrance. Festival Dates and Opening Times While the festival traditionally takes place in October, specific dates for 2025 have yet to be announced. For reference, the 2024 festival was held from October 5 to October 20. The festival grounds typically open from 1:00 PM to 11:00 PM, with lanterns illuminating the night sky after sunset. Admission Admission fees can vary, but as a reference, previous festivals have charged around 10,000 KRW per person, granting access to various festival areas, including the historic Jinjuseong Fortress. This fee often includes a hand stamp, allowing multiple entries throughout the day. Insider Tips - Accommodation: Given the festival's popularity, it's wise to book accommodations well in advance. Opt for lodgings near the Namgang River to immerse yourself fully in the festivities and to navigate the city with ease. - Transportation: From Busan, Jinju is approximately a 1.5-hour bus ride. Buses are frequent and offer a comfortable journey. - Culinary Delights: Indulge in local delicacies at the riverside food tents. Dishes like Korean pancakes (pajeon) paired with traditional rice wine (makgeolli) are festival favorites. Remember to carry cash, as some vendors may not accept cards. - Crowd Navigation: Evenings can get crowded, especially on weekends. Plan to explore the lantern displays later in the evening, post-10:00 PM, when the crowds thin out, allowing for a more intimate experience. - Floating Bridge Experience: For a unique perspective, cross the floating bridge over the Namgang River. There's a nominal fee (around 1,000 KRW), but the views of the illuminated lanterns reflecting on the water are well worth it. - Personal Lanterns: Participate actively by crafting your own lantern. Many festival areas offer stations where you can personalize a lantern and set it afloat, adding your wishes to the collective glow on the river.

Insider Tips - Hahoe Village Fireworks: On weekends during the festival, Hahoe Village hosts a unique fireworks display. While it's free if you catch it in the village, it tends to get crowded. For a more comfortable experience, consider attending the more private show at the festival grounds, even if it comes with a small fee. - Accommodation: Given the festival's popularity, accommodations in Andong fill up quickly. It's wise to book your stay well in advance. Staying in a traditional Korean house (hanok) can enhance your cultural experience. - Transportation: Andong is accessible by train and bus. During the festival, additional buses run between the city center and Hahoe Village, especially on weekends. Be sure to check the latest schedules to plan your trips accordingly. - Culinary Delights: Don't miss out on Andong's local specialties. Treat yourself to Andong Jjimdak, a savory braised chicken dish, and sip on Andong Soju, a traditional Korean distilled beverage. - Engage with the Locals: The festival offers various hands-on experiences, from mask-making workshops to learning traditional dances. Participating in these activities provides a deeper connection to Korean culture and creates lasting memories.

Tips for Experiencing Korea’s Nightlife Safely

Public Transport Ends Around Midnight

Subways and most buses stop running between midnight and 1 AM, so plan accordingly or use Kakao Taxi.

Stay in Well-Lit Areas

Korea is generally very safe, but it’s always best to stick to busy and well-lit streets at night.

Respect Local Customs

While nightlife is vibrant, be mindful of noise levels in residential areas.

Use Cash & Cards

Most places accept cards, but having some cash for street vendors and small shops is always a good idea.
