Essential Apps for a Seamless Trip

I recommend downloading the following apps for your trip to Korea to make it more seamless. These are also the ones I use the most:

KakaoTalk

The go-to messaging app in Korea. Download it to stay connected with locals and fellow travelers. It can also be used for logging into other Apps.

Subway Korea

A user-friendly app for navigating Korea’s subway system. This app works for all subway systems throughout Korea.

Papago

A translation app that is most used in Korea. I recommend this app for communicating with Koreans because the translation to Korean is better and it has a speech function. For the translation of Korean menus to your language, I would recommend using Google Translate with its photo translate feature.

Seoul Bike (Ttareungi)

If you are thinking about renting a bike, this is the best app to use. You can find the bikes almost everywhere throughout the city. If you purchase a pass in advance, the bikes are very easy to unlock and return. The app is compatible with most common credit cards.

Getting a SIM Card

Stay connected during your Seoul adventure with purchasing and activating a local SIM card, ensuring seamless communication and easy navigation throughout your trip. Although Wifi is widely available throughout Seoul I still recommend getting a SIM Card to not be reliable on the public Wifi.

eSIM

Use online sellers like Klook for eSIMs that are user-friendly to install without having to use a physical SIM. eSIMs are my most used option for traveling abroad.

Airport Kiosk

A convenient option to purchase a SIM card before and pick up after landing at Incheon International Airport. There are two options for this. One is the KT Roaming booth located in the quarantine inspection area of Terminal 1 (before arrival gates) and is open 24/7. Another option is SKT Roaming which has a booth in Terminal 1 (Arrival Gate 13 1st floor (24/7) and 2 (6 AM - 10PM)) and Terminal 2 (Arrival Gate 6-7 (24/7))

Convenience Stores

Major convenience stores like 7-Eleven and GS25 sell SIM cards. Just say "Shimcadeu juseyo" (SIM카드 주세요 = Please give me a SIM Card) and the Convenience Store clerk will show you the options.

Transportation Hacks

Seoul has an extensive network of public transportation and taxis. The Seoul subway system is one of the most efficient ways to travel around the city. Trains run non-stop from approximately 5:30 AM until midnight. All subway lines are color-coded and stations display signs in Korean, English, and Chinese. Transfers between subway lines are free, and Transportation Card users can transfer for free between bus and subway lines. A regular subway and bus ride for an adult costs ₩1,500 with a transportation card. I recommend using a transportation card rather than a single-use ticket because those are inconvenient and more expensive. If you enjoy your personal space, try to avoid rush hours in public transportation from 7-9 AM and 4:30 - 7 PM.

Transportation Card

Tmoney Card

Climate Card

The Climate Card is a comprehensive transportation card providing unlimited use of public transportation and Ttareungi(Seoul Bike) for 30 days after charging a one-time fare. This is best for tourists staying in Seoul for one to seven days. It can not be used outside of Seoul though. A One-Day-Pass costs ₩5,000 and Seven-Day-Pass is ₩20,000, which is worth it if you use public transportation more than 4 times a day. You can buy the Climate Card at any Seoul Metro Information Center (Lines 1 to 8) or a convenience store near a station for ₩3,000. After purchase, you need to register your Climate Card online via Tmoney Card & Pay Website. For this, you can scan the QR Code on the back of the card. Finally, you need to charge your Climate card at a charging kiosk inside all subway stations.

WowPass

WowPass is an All-in-One Pass. It provides discounts on public transportation, attractions, and shopping. You can choose from different pass durations and benefits to suit your travel needs.

Namane Card

Getting from and to Incheon Airport

Airport Limousine Bus (my favorite option):

Airport Limousine Buses have multiple routes running between Incheon International Airport and various areas throughout Seoul. You can buy the tickets at Incheon Airport Terminal 1, First Floor, Gates 4 and 9(₩17,000). The buses depart right outside the airport gates. On the way back to the Airport from Seoul Downtown you do not have to buy a ticket in advance, you can just tap in with your Transportation Card. Make sure you have enough balance on the card.

Time: Approx. 60–80 min (varies by route, region, traffic)

Fare: ₩5,500–18,000 (varies by bus)

Pros: Direct service to major hotels and city centers, comfortable seating, luggage storage.

Cons: Can be more expensive than other options, especially for longer distances.

Trains

AREX Express is a premium train that runs non-stop between Incheon International Airport and Seoul Station. You can purchase your ticket online or buy it at the AREX Express train information desk, where both cash and card payments are accepted. In my opinion, it is cheaper and just about 15 minutes longer to take the All-Stop Train to Seoul Station. You can just tap in with your Transportation Card ( ₩4,150 - 4,750). Both are located in B1 of Terminals 1 and 2.

Time: Express Train 43-51 min/ All-Stop-Train 59-66 min

Fare: Express Train ₩11,000 (adult; one-way)/ All-Stop Train ₩4,150 - 4,750

Pros: Fast and efficient, connects directly to Seoul Station and Gimpo Airport.

Cons: Requires transfers for some destinations, less convenient for those staying in remote areas.

Taxi

Taxis are divided into standard yellow taxis (easy to grap with cheapest fare), premium deluxe black taxis (Bigger and 40 to 50% more expensive than regular taxis), international taxis with foreign language services (20% more expensive than regular taxis; drivers can speak English, Japanese, or Chinese), and large deluxe taxis (limousine taxis, jumbo taxis) that are 7-11-seater minivans (same fare as deluxe taxis). Standard Taxis can be found at the taxi platform outside the Arrival Hall in Incheon Airport Terminals 1 and 2. To take an international taxi you have to make a reservation in advance. You can pay with cash, credit cards, and transportation cards. Taxi fares depend on the time, traffic situation, and distance.

Time: Approx. 60–100 min (varies by route, region, traffic)

Fare: Approx. ₩50,000 ₩70,000 for standard taxis

Pros: Door-to-door service, convenient for late-night arrivals or specific destinations.

Cons: Can be more expensive, especially during peak hours or for long distances.

Rental Cars

If you prefer to be completely independent or also want to visit places outside of Seoul you can rent a car at Incheon Airport. This always requires you to have a valid international driver's permit. Driving in Seoul is not for beginner drivers. I had my driver's license for over 10 years while driving regularly and I still get stressed in the Seoul traffic. Coming from a country that to this day widely uses manual cars, it makes it a bit easier to drive through Seoul with automatic cars that are more commonly used in Korea.

Pros: Flexibility and convenience for independent travelers.

Cons: Requires a valid international driving permit, traffic congestion in Seoul can be challenging.

How to use City Buses

Payment Methods

You can use either prepaid transportation cards, a local deferred transportation card or cash (be aware that Seoul is promoting more and more cashless buses, as indicated by a sign outside of the bus door).

Free Ride Passengers

This includes up to three infants and toddlers (under age 6) accompanied by their adult guardian.

Transfer Tips (available for bus to subway, subway to bus, bus to bus, subway to subway)

- Tap your card on the card reader when getting off

- Transfer within 30 mins of tapping after getting off

- You can transfer up to 4 times for free

Multi-passenger Boarding/ Transferring

- Only applied when the number of passengers boarding or transferring is the same

- Subway transfer discount is not applied to multi-passenger boarding

- When boarding, tell the driver the number of passengers in advance

- When transferring, tell the initial number of passengers to get the transfer discount

Cultural Ettique: A Quick Guide

Bowing: A common gesture of respect, especially in formal settings.

Shoes Off: Remove your shoes before entering homes, temples, and traditional restaurants.

Chopstick Etiquette: Avoid sticking chopsticks upright in rice, as it’s considered disrespectful.

Modesty: Dress modestly when visiting temples.

Queueing: Koreans value order and queuing, it could be perceived as rude if you skip a line.

Language Phrases

A lot of people in Seoul do speak a bit of English but especially elderly don't. Of course there is no need to learn these phrases but it makes your travel more fun and will enhance your travel experience. The following phrases are the ones that I survived with in my first year in Korea. Even if you only know one phrase Koreans will compliment you on your good Korean :):

"Gam-sa-ham-ni-da" - Thank you! (감사합니다!)

"An-nyeong-ha-se-yo" - Hello/ Bye (안녕하세요?)

"I-geo ju-se-yo" (Point on the item you would like) - Give me this please. (이거 주세요.)

"Eol-ma-ye-yo" - How much is this? (얼마예요?)

"(place you are looking for) eu-di-e-yo?" - Where is ... (... 어디에요?)

N Seoul Tower

If you enjoy hiking, I recommend hiking up to the N Seoul Tower either from Myeongdong Station Exit 3 towards the left of 7-11 convenience store, going straight and walking towards the right of Pacific Hotel, and walking uphill past the Cable Car Station, which takes about an hour and is a moderate walk. Another option is the Cable Car, which is ₩15,000 for a round-trip or there are some shuttle bus options (No 01A and No 01B) up to the tower. If you are budget travelling, there is already a great view on top of the mountain but if you want to up to the Observatory it will be ₩21,000. From spicy kimchi to savory grilled meats, there’s something to tantalize every palate. Get ready to savor the rich flavors of Korea’s diverse and delicious food scene.

Bibimbap

Mokmyeoksanbang
@melissaschwedhelm
This restaurant is located in Myeongdong and it's Michelin recognized. I recommend coming here shortly before it opens at 11 am because it is popular and the waiting can get long. It is easy to order for tourists because you can order from a machine located by the entrance and an English menu is available.

Tteokbokki

Spicy rice cakes. You can find these in most street food stands or on local markets. Be aware that these can be very spicy. I don't recommend having Tteokbokki if you can't handle spice well.

Kimchi Jjigae

Kimchi stew. (My ultimate favorite :D) This is best for days when it's colder or rainy to heat you up from the inside. One of the best places is Seoulgogiship (서울고기집). Here you can have some Kimchi Jjigae with rice. I wouldn't recommend going around lunchtime because waiting can get long (11:30ish). It's located close to the Namdaemun market, so you can roam around the market after the meal or get some Korean pancake (heotteok)

It's located close to the Namdaemun market, so you can roam around the market after the meal or get some Korean pancake (heotteok).

Geumdwaeji Sikdang
@melissaschwedhelm
One of the most popular restaurants for this is Geumdwaeji Sikdang (금돼지 식당) located in Dongdaemun. A lot of stars like BTS Jongkook or David Beckham went here. Don't miss the Basil wrap.

Fried Chicken

My favorite franchise for this is bbq Chicken(bbq치킨)! I recommend getting the crispy fried one and the yangnyeom chicken (fried chicken covered in red spicy and sweet sauce) It is common to have beer with chicken in Korea called Chimaek (Chicken + Maekju (Beer)) So order some Terra or Cass with your chicken :D

Below you can find the logo of bbq Chicken. They have tons of stores throughout Korea and should be easy to find.

Must-Try Experiences

A Hanbok Experience

Embark on a journey through time by donning a traditional Korean Hanbok. Strike a pose in front of iconic backdrops and capture unforgettable memories.

A Korean Spa Ritual

Relax and rejuvenate your body and mind at a traditional Korean spa. Immerse yourself in a world of tranquility as you experience various spa treatments, including saunas, steam rooms, and body scrubs. (Be aware that some spas don't let people with tattoos enter) If you are on a girl's trip I can recommend the following which is an all-women sauna that I have visited before. It was very clean and easy to navigate:

A K-Pop Adventure

Dive into the world of K-Pop by visiting SMTOWN and YG PLACE, where you can explore interactive exhibits, purchase merchandise, and even catch a glimpse of your favorite idols (if you're lucky!).

A Seoul FC Match

Experience the electrifying atmosphere of a Seoul FC soccer match. Cheer on the home team and feel the energy of the crowd.

A Korean Skincare Experience

Pamper yourself with a luxurious Korean skincare treatment. From facial masks to serums, discover the secrets to achieving flawless skin.
