Phi Phi Islands
@kelsienaugler
Phi Phi is a beautiful archipelago made of fantastic beaches and immense cliffs over two bays you can admire from a famous viewpoint. Phi Phi is also renowned among young crowds for those legendary beach parties lasting all night long, reminding a bit of the Full Moon Parties on Koh Phangan. But this fame comes with a price, and Phi Phi may have become too popular.

Phang Nga Bay
@kelsienaugler
The incredible scenery of Phang Nga has always been at the top of our list of places to visit. There are many ways to explore it. You can take a lazy sunset cruise on a Chinese Junk or explore Phang Nga by canoe through caves and enclosed lagoons. If you can afford it, a full day on a customised private cruise around Phang Nga is the most relaxing and enjoyable experience. Day trips to Phang Nga usually include a stop at the famous James Bond Island and Koh Panyi, the village built entirely on stilts. Similar to the famous Halong Bay in Vietnam, these landscapes will leave unforgettable memories.

Koh Panyi
@kelsienaugler
Koh Panyi is a surprisingly small fishermen’s village built entirely on stilts in the middle of Phang Nga Bay. What used to be a remote place is now more of a tourist attraction, but it is still a real village with a sizeable Muslim community, a mosque and a school. You can explore the narrow ‘streets’ and see the water through the crevices of the floor, do some local shopping and enjoy a tasty seafood lunch.

Koh Khai is a group of famous tiny islands just 15 15-minute speedboat ride from Phuket’s east coast. There are three islands: Koh Khai Nai, Koh Khai Nui and Koh Khai Nok, but their names get a little confusing, especially once you know that ‘Koh’ means ‘Island’ in Thai.

Old Phuket Town
@kelsienaugler
It’s hard to resist those old Sino-Portuguese streets with beautiful shophouses and magnificent mansions. Phuket’s old town is perfect for a half-day, with many small cafes, bakeries, and eateries along the way. You can reach there by tuk-tuk or even with the local blue bus that stops at the city market, then walk to Thalang Road, the most popular of the old streets of Phuket Town. Visit the local markets near the bus station and explore the little streets here and there to discover some incredible abandoned mansions. Don’t miss the Phuket Walking Street on Sunday, a chance to try a lot of local food you cannot find easily!

@kelsienaugler
Number 3 on our list of best things to do in Phuket has always been the Big Buddha, an iconic 45-meter tall white marble statue sitting at the top of Nakkerd hill in the south of the island. The construction of this statue, entirely from donations, started in 2002. You can contribute too by sponsoring one small white marble tile and signing your name on it. MAITON BEACH
@kelsienaugler
There are a lot of islands near Phuket, but because Maiton was a very exclusive private island for a long time, it has remained a little mysterious. Even though Maiton is only 15 minutes from Phuket by speedboat, not many people visit it. To add to this surreal atmosphere, 60 of the once luxurious 70 villas are now just standing wrecks. It’s a very peaceful and beautiful island, great to relax, snorkel and take photos, and there are no loud watersports here.

Maeklong Railway Market
@kelsienaugler
Mae Klong railway market (Hoop Rom Market) is a local market in Samut Songkhram Province, commonly called Siang Tai (life-risking) Market. It is considered one of amazing-Thailand attractions in the province. Spreading over a 100-metre length, the market is located by the railway near Mae Klong Railway Station, Mueng District, Samut Songkhram Province. It is a common fresh market selling seafood, vegetable, fruits, fresh and dried food, meats and other miscellaneous goods. Mae Klong Railway Market is open from 6.00 a.m. -6.00 p.m. The market is called life-risking market because its stalls are attached to the Mae Klong-Ban Laem railway, which is a short railway line running from and to Mahachai and Mae Klong. Vendors at the market put out parasols or canvas to protect themselves against the sun. The shelters stick into the railway where visitors walk and do their shopping. When each signal of the arriving train rings, chaos happens: vendors will rush to close their parasols and canvas, along with clearing all goods that will obstruct the coming train at a great speed. Once the train passes, parasols and canvas will be reopened as goods are again put into their usual place next to the railroad. The market, accordingly, is so called Hoop Rom (umbrella/parasol-closing) Market. The practice is usual for vendors and local people, but not for tourists who will definitely find the scene exciting and enjoyable at each visit. The parasol-closing event happens eight times per day according to the time that trains leave Mahachai for Mae Klong and depart Mae Klong for Mahachai. Trains will arrive at Mae Klong Station at 8.30 a.m., 11.10 a.m., 2.30 p.m. and 5.40 p.m., and depart the station at 6.20 a.m., 9.00 a.m., 11.30 a.m. and 3.30 p.m.. To arrive by car, take Thonburi-Pak Tho route until the 63rd kilometer. Keep left and enter the paralleled elevated highway to read the centre of Samut Songkhram. Drive past the first light and the market. At the second light, turn right and cross over the railway to arrive at Mae Klong Railway Market.By train, from Wonwian Yai Railway Station, get off at Mahachai Station. Take a ferry to Tha Chalom side and catch the train from Ban Laem Station to Mae Klong, which is the last station.

Muang Boran (Ancient City)
@kelsienaugler
"The Ancient city is a gorgeous temple complex with replicas of temples from all around Thailand located in Bangkok. 🎟️ Entrance fee The entrance fee is pretty expensive with 700 baht (€20) pp but we bought tickets through Klook and only paid €9 per person. This worked perfectly! #nospon 🚝 Transport We recommend taking the green bts line all the way down to Kheha and taking a special taxi from there as it’s convenient and cheap. The taxi is a kind of small pick up truck and is located right at the exit of Kheha station. For 10 baht pp (€0,27) they will take you to the entrance of the Ancient City. 🛺 Getting around the park The complex is huge so we highly recommend renting a golf cart. For us this was half of the fun! It’s 350 baht (€9,50) the first hour and 100 baht (€2,50) each hour after. Don’t forget to bring your (international) driver’s license! If you want to save money you can also rent a (electric) bike or go by foot.

Amphawa Floating Market
@kelsienaugler
"Samut Songkhram Province, is famous for its large and lively weekend floating market. Unlike the nearby Damnoen Saduak, Amphawa Market operates in the evenings. It is more popular with Thais, meaning foreign visitors can enjoy more of a traditional and authentic experience than at some of the larger and more well-known floating markets in Thailand. The market is especially known for its wide assortment of food, including dishes that can be difficult to find elsewhere in the country. Visitors can take a boat ride along the river, pausing to haggle with floating vendors and to admire riverside temples. During the rainy season the trees flicker and shine from the glow of fireflies and the insects create enchanting illuminations in front of your eyes to add to the charm. Amphawa is a very popular floating market in Thailand, located 90 km south-west of Bangkok. It's cute and fun and very authentic, with many little wooden houses neatly lined up along the canal, selling souvenirs, snacks and sweets. Don't miss the amazing little temple swallowed by a giant tree located across the river. On the downside, it gets incredibly crowded! Past midday, it feels like half the population of Bangkok has moved to Amphawa! To avoid that, make it a morning trip, have an early seafood lunch on the river banks and get a little longtail boat cruise when the rest of the crowd just starts eating.

The Artist's House
@kelsienaugler
10AM -6PM | 09:00 to 18:00 "Centuries-old house turned gallery, with local artwork, photography & a puppet theater. You can make your own bracelets. The Artist’s House is situated along a canal on the Thonburi side of Bangkok. A difficult attraction to find and when you do, a great sense of fulfillment will surely come after. This kind of old Thai wooden house was very typical along the klongs in earlier times but today these are becoming rare. This house also has some unusual features that always catch the eyes of tourists passing by on speeding boats: Several human-sized statues painted in white, red or black sitting by the water, endlessly staring at life passing by. If you take a klong tour, chances are you passed by the Artist’s House. Boats don’t stop and only the brave will find the way to the house through narrow streets from Wat Kuhasan. The boardwalk leading to the house now hosts several shops and tiny restaurants that lead to a temple. Did I mention that it also has a tall white chedi dating all the way back to the Ayutthaya period standing in the backyard? Yes, it has. This two hundred years old place also houses a modest cafe and a shop selling cool stationery, postcards in addition to an art gallery displaying paintings, masks and, of course, puppets. The main reason for people to come all this way despite the difficulty is the rare traditional Thai puppet show, performed with delicately crafted puppets. Traditional Thai Puppet Show These traditional puppet shows are now really hard to find. Performed at 14:00 every day except on Wednesday. On a small wooden stage in front of the white stupa, intricately-made puppets are manipulated by several artists all dressed in black. Each day a different story based on Thai folklore is narrated, involving mythological creatures, often including Hanuman the monkey god. The Artist’s House is open every day, usually from 09:00 to 18:00. To get there you probably have to get a motorbike taxi to drop you to Wat Kuhasawan, the nearby temple, like we did. Then from there walk along the canal using google maps and/or ask around. It’s hard to find but I assure you, it’s really worth it! we You can also arrange a private transport from your hotel to take you there and back!"

Jim Thompson House Museum
@kelsienaugler
"You are now in the Thai home of Jim Thompson, an American who was born in Greenville, Delaware, in 1906. A practicing architect prior to World War II, he volunteered for service in the U.S. Army, campaigned in Europe and was later sent to Asia. however, the war ended before he saw action. He was sent to Bangkok a short time later as a military officer and fell in love with Thailand. After leaving the service, he decided to return and live here permanetly. The hand weaving of silk, a long-neglected cottage industry, captured Jim Thompson’s attention, and he devoted himself to reviving the craft. Highly gifted as a designer and textile colorist, he contributed substantially to the industy’s growth and to the worldwide recognition accorded to Thai silk. He gained further renown through the construction of this house combining six teak buildings, which represented the best in traditional Thai architecture. Most of the houses were at least two centuries old and were easily dismantled and brought to the present site, some from as far away as the old capital of Ayudhya. In his quest for authenticity, Jim Thompson adhered to the customs of the early builder in most respects. The houses were elevated a full story above the grounds, a practical Thai precaution to avoid flooding during the rainy season. The roof tiles were fired in Ayudhya employing a design common centuries ago but rarely used today. The red paint of the outside walls is a preservative often found on many old Thai buildings. The chandeliers were a concession to modern convenience, but even they belong to a past era, having come from 18th and 19th century Bangkok palaces. All the traditional religious rituals were followed during construction of the house, and on a spring day in 1959, decreed as being auspicious by astrologers, Jim Thompson moved in. The house and the art collection soon became such a point of interest that he decided to pen his home to the public with proceeds donated to Thai charities and to projects directed at the preservation of Thailand’s rich cultural heritage. On March 26th 1967, Jim Thompson disappeared while on a visit to the Cameron Highlands in Malaysia. Not a single valid clue has turned up in the ensuing years as to what might have happened to him. His famouse Thai house, however, remains as a lasting reminder of his creative ability and his deep love of Thailand."

Taling Chan Floating Market
@kelsienaugler
"Taling Chan is one of our favorite floating markets near Bangkok as it has just the right amount of everything you could ask for from an iconic Bangkok attraction. Located only 12 km from downtown Bangkok, Taling Chan is open all day and has just enough boats to be called a floating market, plus a large local market attached to it. There are small longtail boat cruises to take you around the nearby khlongs (canals) and get a relaxing glimpse of the surrounding area. It perhaps lacks the old-world charm of other markets, but it has the more genuine feel to it."

Khlong Lat Mayom Floating Market
@kelsienaugler
"Khlong Lat Mayom is a medium-sized floating market located really close to Bangkok. It's a really local market and you might be one of the very few foreigners around. The main market itself is on solid ground but it's very interesting with the chance to sample all kinds of fun sweets and fruits. As it's located just near Taling Chan Floating Market, it is better to combine both markets on the same morning. On the downside, not being a major tourist attraction, the Khlong Lat Mayom Floating Market lacks the size of the more famous ones. You might only see 10 floating vendors at the most, with no option for a longtail boat cruise to explore the area."

Tha Kha Floating Market
@kelsienaugler
"Tha Kha Floating Market is the smaller sibling of the nearby Damneon Saduak market. It attracts a much smaller amount of tourists and, with a canopy of natural surroundings, it's protected from overdevelopment, so its modest size and local atmosphere are likely to remain. The market has a number of elderly Thais in their rowboats selling fruit, vegetables, local food, and delicious sweets. The main buyers here are the Tha Kha natives (also in rowboats). People here seem to know each other very well and there are often very few tourists around."
