This is a mini guide to Sintra, Portugal. I HIGHLY recommend spending a night or even two in Sintra instead of just passing through on a day trip.
Sintra, Portugal is a magical place. It is the town where royalty spent their summers, and it shows! The fact that it is just about 45 minutes from Lisbon makes it even better, it is so easily accessible. I have been to Sintra twice and I still haven’t seen it all. The first time I went, it was just a for day trip and just wished I had more time. The second time, we stayed overnight and I still found myself wishing I had more time! I would advise spending a night or even a weekend in Sintra.
The town of Sintra itself is charming and easy to walk around and enjoy. During my first time there, I didn’t even get to explore the town because we got off the train, grabbed lunch, and immediately started walking up to the Pena Palace. It was like a tease to only be able to explore a small portion of this gorgeous city, so for my second visit to Sintra, I didn’t make that same mistake. We enjoyed spending our time walking around and checking out all of the pastry shops, little bars, cute stores, and restaurants.
In this guide you'll find all of my favorite spots, as well as where to stay, what to do, and what I STILL think I would do if I visit again!

A Very Opinionated, Bossy, No-Nonsense, Portugal Road Trip Itinerary (Lisbon & North)
It seems that everyone has an opinion on Portugal, amirite? You've seen dozens of Lisbon and Porto "must do" Instagram reels for this uber-popular (and rightly so!) country. So, what's this free guide gonna offer you? My own bossy opinions on what to do, where to eat, what not to miss, and where to stay. That's it. Covers top recommendations for 4-5 days in Lisbon and about 10 days on a road trip north to Cascais, Sintra, Aveiro, Porto, and The Duoro Wine Region. I've spent 10 weeks in Portugal on three separate trips and these are my tips.

Here's my 3-day itinerary for a long weekend spent in the unique capital of Portugal, Lisbon. In this guide, you will find the top places to stay, eat and drink in Lisbon that are perfect for sightseeing this unique city in only 3 days! If you have an extra day I highly recommend a day at one of the many golden sand beaches along the Costa da Caparica, up to 40 minutes away by Uber.
My top tip for your Lisbon city break: Uber and Bolt taxis are your best friend! If in a large group, these taxi services can be just as cheap as public transport and always arrive quickly. Bolt often offers discounts of up to 70% off your first ride if you have never used the app before, so save this for a longer and more expensive trip, say to the beach or to Sintra!

A trip to Portugal had been on my travel list since the day I graduated in 2017, but life got in the way and it kept getting pushed out further and further. I only made it there after I had moved to London in 2023. After spending 5 years hyping it up in my head I was sure I was going to disappoint myself, but Portugal has exceeded every expectation - with Lisbon taking the crown.
In this guide, you'll receive 24 hand-picked recommendations for a first trip to Lisbon, including:
🍳 5 essential places to brunch
🍴 4 best places to grab lunch
🍰 1 spot for the best chocolate cake you will ever eat
🍹 3 wine/cocktail bars
🪟 3 stunning viewpoints
🏛️ 3 architectural gems
👣 2 neighbourhoods to stroll through (not including Alfama, because it would be criminal to charge you for obvious information!)
🚘 3 ideas for day trips from Lisbon (again, not including Sintra which is an obvious choice!)

Lisboa: every relevant place by a local, split into categories and with a summary of what to expect
You know the exercise of planning what to visit in a city by searching online "what to do in XXXX" and opening 10 tabs in an attempt not to let anything escape? And then not fully understanding what were the most relevant things for your kind of traveller? Well, I've been there multiple times!!!
That's why I though that, as a local in Lisboa who has explored everything this city has to offer, I can make things easy for someone planning to visit it by creating a single source of information with all that.
86 places split into categories to make navigation and priorization easy:
1. Lisboa-exclusive places you must go to (3 tiers according to relevance)
2. Places around Lisboa you should visit (includes Sintra, Almada and Mafra)
3. Hidden gems (again 3 tiers according to relevance)
4. Old trams / Elevators / Funiculairs (you can be a fan and go around all of them or simply pick the best ones, which I refer)
5. Viewpoints (again, either go to all of them or just my top picks)
6. Things you can do around the world and here are nice as well
On top of that you've got the ultimate Portuguese food checklist with 45 things you shoult try and whithout which your trip will be incomplete (90% of them can be found in Lisboa)
My main objective with this guide is not to go into detail about each of these attractions but rather to categorize and give some hints about it so you decide whether to put it on your plan or not. If it is a monument or museum requiring a deep explanation of the hitory around it, you'll find it there.
In case you have any question while planning your trip, we can also make a quick call for free ;)
I wish you enjoy this city as much as I do and please do send me a message with feedback on this guide, as I use that to improve on it.
