I’m going to cover all of my favorite places to eat and drink in San Sebastian, Spain!
About me and my travel style: I lived in San Sebastian from February-April, 2023. I restaurant and bar hopped my way through each neighborhood and am here to tell you my recommendations! If you’re the type of foodie that values atmosphere, presentation, and all-around vibes, then this is the guide for you! I’m all about budget with a side of splurge! What does that mean? Well, sometimes I spend more on a cocktail than the amount of food I’ve ordered. But other times, I order multiple pintxos (pronounced pinchos) and wait to buy a bottle of wine at the supermarket afterwards! Don’t let the colorful salad photo fool you, the majority of this guide focuses on pastries, meat, and cheese! I like to be out and about, and as a solo traveler, bars and restaurants provide a great place to people watch! I’ll include the places I frequented on my own, the spots me and my newfound friends hit, and where I took my guests who visited me for a more high-end experience! I’ll give you my perspective as a 27-year-old American from Atlanta, and I’ll share tid bits I heard along the way from others!
About San Sebastian: You will not be disappointed with the amount of cafes, restaurants, and bars available at your fingertips! This town thrives on their cuisine and nightlife, so there’s something for everyone! Since the amount of options can be overwhelming, I’m here to share the highlights from my experience after some hits and some misses! I really tried to narrow down this list, so I capped it at 45 places.
This guide includes where to go, for what meal, and in which neighborhood:

If you're looking for a city escape to live your European Summer dream, you've come to the right place! This is my 100% honest opinion of my 10 favorite European cities to visit in Summer.
I see lots and lots of guides out there suggesting Paris (hello, has someone heard of the Olympic Games taking place?), Madrid (if you love 45° weather I guess) or Lisbon (great choice if you want to be 1 or 100 000 tourists). While these are all great destinations year-round, I don't think Summer is the right season to visit them. Personally, I'd go there in Spring or Autumn, not during the high season.
Full disclosure, this is a no Greece, no Italy guide. You'll only find cities that I love, and I think are worth going to discover if you're looking for a short city-escape this Summer.
What will you find in this guide?

Only the best spots to shop, wine, dine and get hyped up in the Spanish capital - a modern city that honors its historical heritage.
Passionate people from Madrid are all about getting together, enjoying life and art in all its forms. Regardless of the season, Madrid abounds in art venues, cultural manifestations and night life. However, a little bit of shopping won’t hurt either. 😉
Highlights:
🐻 El Oso y el Madroño (the Bear and the Strawberry Tree) - the symbol of the city, is a sculpture from the 2nd half of the 20th century, that represents the coat of arms of Madrid and is found on the east side of the Puerta del Sol, between Calle de Alcalá and Carrera de San Jerónimo, in the historical centre of the capital.
🐂 Corrida de toros - Spanish-style bullfighting, involves a physical contest with humans (and other animals) attempting to publicly subdue, immobilize, or kill a bull. The most common bull used is the Spanish Fighting Bull (Toro Bravo), a type of cattle native to the Iberian Peninsula. This style of bullfighting is seen to be both a sport and performance art. In a traditional corrida, three toreros (or matadores) each "fight" against two out of a total of six "fighting" bulls to death.
💃🏻Flamenco - is an art form (incorporating poetry, singing, guitar playing, dance, polyrhythmic hand-clapping and finger snapping) strongly influenced by the Gitanos, but which has its deeper roots in Moorish musical traditions. Flamenco culture originated in Andalusia, but has since become one of the icons of Spanish music and even Spanish culture in general.
🍖Jamón - is a kind of dry-cured ham that’s at the heart of Spanish culture and cuisine. There exist two great traditions of artisanal cured hams in Spain, both of which are a source of enjoyment and great pride among Spaniards:
1. Jamón Serrano - a cured country ham made from conventional pork.
2. Jamón Ibérico - produced from non-acorn fed pigs (Cerdo Ibérico) or acorn-fed variety which results in Jamón Ibérico de Bellota (considered the world's finest ham).
🥨 Churros - is a type of fried dough, made with choux pastry dough piped into hot oil with a piping bag and large closed star tip or similar shape. They can either be thin (and sometimes knotted) or long and thick, where they are known as porras or jeringos in some regions. Normally eaten for breakfast dipped in champurrado, hot chocolate, dulce de leche or café con leche.
🏟️ Football fans should be very excited about Madrid, as it hosts one of the best teams ever - Real Madrid. Visit Real Madrid’s home by taking a tour on their stadium, Santiago Bernabéu.

While this is still a largely undiscovered part of the world by most foreigners, it's widely known as a culinary mecca for everyone with an interest in food and food culture. Basque cuisine is renowned worldwide for being some of the most visionary and avant-garde in the industry, and food as a whole is an extremely important part of Basque culture.
There's so much more to do in the Basque Country than just enjoying the food though! The entire region is truly a gift to the planet in terms of natural beauty, being nestled between mountains and the sea. Basques have been fishers and mountain climbers, sailing the seas and scaling mountains, while also developing some of the strongest industry in Southern Europe.
Here's a guide to some of the absolutely crucial visits you *must* make while you're in the area, whether you're based in Bilbao or San Sebastián (referred to as "Donosti" by Basques, a shortened form of its Basque name Donostia), though I prefer Bilbao because I'm biased. 😜
This guide encompasses everything from landmarks to towns and even a few restaurants, perfect for when you're considering whether to check out this beautiful and charming region.
I focus on the Spanish Basque Country as it's what I'm most familiar with, but recommendations for the French Basque Country (known as the "Iparralde" or "north country" in Basque) will come soon!

I've always loved hotels. This is why I ended up studying hospitality at Les Roches International School of Hotel Management in Marbella, Spain and working for Starwood, Kempinski and Mandarin Oriental.
I've been a Spain specialist since 2019, which means that I've had the opportunity to stay in and inspect some wonderful properties over the years.
Here, I'm sharing a collection of my favorite hotels.
