To get the most out of your travel time I suggest flying into Osaka and out of Tokyo. You can also of course flip this itinerary around and start in Tokyo and end in Osaka.
This trip only has you riding the Shinkansen (the bullet train) one time, between Kyoto and Tokyo, and thus does not require you to purchase a JR Rail pass.

A hotel room with an epilepsy warning? An omakase course of tea-based cocktails? I can't say for sure these are hidden gems, but after months of seeing everyone and their moms go to Japan since COVID reopening, I can say these were some of my favorite spots that I seldom saw people visit.
Hi! I'm a Brooklyn-based tech journalist-turned-corporate comms editor. Early in my career I spent a stint as a luxury travel planner and writer specializing in Asia, and if I can toot my own horn, I'm often the friend everyone says "wth Natt, how do you find all these cool spots, drop that itin." (Fine, they don't say it like that, but you get the point).
Travel planning is a great hobby for me, and I am writing this as both a journal to remember my trip by and to share with friends, hence the overly familiar tone you might find below. If you discovered this on the Thatch platform, consider giving my guide a shot and hopefully you'll find it useful for an adventuresome visit to Japan!
This guide includes:
✈️ Pre and post-arrival pro-tips
🛌 Hotel, restaurant, and activity suggestions with some personal anecdotes (we vetted any Instagram vs realities!)
📍 Resources, databases, and things to make your journey more efficient and economical
It is not:
📆 A list of daily itineraries
❓ "Beginner's guide to Japan" i.e. how to book JR trains, basic etiquettes, how to transfer from airport to city
🔝 The absolute best of the bests - opinions here totally my own

Himukai Daijingu is a Kyoto location which includes nature, history, and folklore. In this guide we'll find one of the most interesting, and scenic shrines in Kyoto, but also one that doesn't suffer from the over-crowding that occurs at some of the more city central shrines and temples.
This walking guide route takes you into nature, delves in to folklore, and also into the time of major modernization and industrialization of Japan, the Meiji Era. We'll also see the site of a bloody samurai battle!
It is conveniently accessible from Kyoto centre, but also connects to the scenic hiking route, The Kyoto Trail, should the more adventurous visitor wish to extend their route in that direction. It's the Kyoto that most visitors don't see.

I’ve designed this itinerary to offer a realistic and enjoyable experience of Kyoto. Many itineraries I’ve seen online are often overly packed, pushing you to rush through numerous sights and activities. This can lead to a vacation where you miss out on unique experiences because you were too focused on seeing everything.
I believe a vacation should be enjoyable and immersive, not a race to tick off as many sights as possible. This itinerary gives you ample time to explore at your own pace, allowing you to fully appreciate each destination and discover hidden gems along the way. It’s not just about seeing everything; it’s about creating meaningful memories.
To help you make the most of your time, I’ve included a free link to a resource with additional activity suggestions. Simply add these to your Google Maps to find more things to do, from local restaurants (include vegetarian and vegan options) to beautiful temples and shrines, based on where you are and what interests you. If you find yourself with extra time or looking for something new to explore, you’ll have convenient options right at your fingertips.
Enjoy your vacation, take your time, and embrace those unexpected moments that make travel truly special.

Over the years, our social media feeds became filled of must-visit spots and mouthwatering culinary delights, shaping our anticipation for the journey ahead. Drawing from the collective wisdom of friends who've called Japan home and our own wanderings, we meticulously crafted a comprehensive guide to this captivating country.
The process was no small feat, spanning the better part of a year, with our guide taking shape alongside the anticipation of booked flights. Aware of the finite nature of our adventure, we set out to squeeze every drop of experience from our time in Japan.
Yet, with the thought in mind of luggage to lug and trains to catch, it prompted us to narrow our focus to the three bustling hubs of Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto. While this guide shines a spotlight on Tokyo's wonders, be sure to peruse our other guides for a taste of what awaits in Osaka and Kyoto.
This guide is an ever-changing list of hidden gems and culinary delights scattered throughout the cityscape. First time visiting Japan, but looking for an itinerary beyond the Golden Triangle [Tokyo, Kyoto, & Osaka]? This itinerary efficiently combines these cities with smaller traditional villages, serene gardens, the magical nature of the Nagano and Wakayama Prefectures, and small islands. The itinerary is designed for a time span of two weeks onwards. Covering all places in two weeks, like we did, results in a packed planning. By stretching the time span, one can personalize the itinerary; while one person might decide to spend some additional time on Naoshima, others will prefer to book an additional night in the city of Osaka.
Next to the diverse palette of places, this itinerary includes plenty of recommendations for tearooms, restaurants, and hotels.
All pictures are taken by myself.
