Mild climate and fertile volcanic soil made the island appealing for settlers. It quickly became an export hub for in-demand sugar. A fishing industry eventually followed. Now it's tourists who are flocking to the island. They're lured by black-sand beaches, hidden hot springs, lake-filled craters, Europe's only tea plantations, quiet hiking trails, volcanic hills, and whale-watching tours. There are two major reasons to visit Pico Island: hiking and wine. Though there are trails all over the island, Ponta do Pico is the biggest (literally) draw for hikers. Mount Pico, a dormant stratovolcano, is the highest mountain in not only the Azores, but in all of Portugal. The wine is equally impressive. The vineyards are a UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to the basalt stone walls that surround them. So the two reasons to visit Pico Island are very good ones. Pico Island is in the Azores' Central Group of islands. You can see and easily visit two others, Faial and São Jorge, from here. The Black Island (the black volcanic soil says it all) was discovered in the 14th century, though it wasn't settled until the 1480s. Volcanic eruptions kept deterring people, though. It wasn't until the 18th century that the lava flow ceased, Verdelho grapes started thriving, and whale hunting became popular. Pico found its groove. Similar to São Miguel, tourists are now flocking to Pico. They're lured by the humid and mild climate, rarely exported wine, bucket-list hikes, and whale-watching trips. Madalena, the tiny main town, blends history and nature on the west coast. While Pico's east coast feels like it's still waiting to be discovered. Home to arguably the best food and wine on earth. We loved Florence and the beautiful Tuscan vineyards and can't wait to return one day. You'll find our favorite restaurants, activities, and a few day trips included in this guide. Here are some travel tips: 1. The trains STOP at around 7PM; so make sure you plan your dinner reservations accordingly. The app you want is called "Trenitalia" - I've included a link to the app under "Day Trips" below. 2. Take all of your normal public safety precautions; pickpocketing and side scams are common. 3. If the gelato is mounded so high it's reaching towards the heavens, it's not for you. 4. If there are waiters outside waving you in with bold English menus, say "no, grazi". 5. Always ask if the establishment accepts credit cards before you order. 6. Prepare to tip your tour guides well, especially if your tour was "Free". 7. Do not pass up on a wine window!! This city's beautiful and unique, hidden gems.

Explore one of the smallest but prettiest regions of Colombia! The Quindío region, known for being the coffee birthplace of Colombia, is safe, touristic, colourful, culturally rich and filled with the most attentionate people. It is definitely a must when visiting the country. Being Colombian myself, I have visited this corner of the world about five or six times already, and it is my favourite place in the whole world (for real). This was exactly my itinerary for my last trip there, when I got to bring my boyfriend to this magical place for the first time and he absolutely fell in love with it as well. Here are some of the activities we enjoyed: - Guided coffee tasting tour - Folkloric dance show - Coffee culture museum - Guided tour around a botanical garden - Visit to the special butterfly nest - Horseback riding through the mountains - Hiking to the source of thermal waters - Spa day and relaxation ... and so much more. Everywhere you turn your head you have the most amazing view, surrounded by nature and its infinite shades of green, with hummingbirds and butterflies filling the space. You will taste some of the best coffee in the world, learn how that became the backbone of the agriculture of the region, appreciate the local cuisine and, the best part, is that most of my recommendations are sustainable tourism! In this itinerary I will not only give you activities and hotels, I will also explain to you how things really work there, what documents are normal to provide hotels with for example, or the best way to contact places and people. The reason I don't give restaurant recommendations in this itinerary is because you can find good food everywhere, in every corner, for every budget, and everyone has different tastes and/or restrictions, which I cannot possibly account for by providing options and alternatives.
