Destinations:
San Salvador, El Zonte/El Tunca, Santa Ana
I've included tips and recommendations for transportation around El Salvador, places to eat & drink, places to shop, and places to explore. There are 30 recommendations included with an interactive map to help you plan your adventure.
These are mostly personal recommendations from my 10-day stay.
Updated June 2024
I was in El Salvador in July, and the weather was mostly warm. There was a mix of rainy days and sunny days.
"El Salvador, a small country of Central America located at 13-14 degrees north latitude and overlooking the Pacific Ocean, has a tropical climate, hot all year round along the coast and below 1,000 meters (3,300 feet), which are called tierras calientes, with little difference in the temperature (only a few degrees) over the seasons.
The real difference is found in rainfall and humidity: there is a rainy season from late April to October which is also definitely muggy."
I did not work while I was in San Salvador, so I'm not sure if the internet in most places is strong enough for remote working. However, there is wifi in most places. The wifi in our Airbnb was good enough for social media and streaming videos.
Transportation
Uber is available in San Salvador. We used Uber while in San Salvador and then rented a car to take road trips outside of San Salvador.
There are local buses, known as chicken buses, that you can use to get around El Salvador. These are the colorful old American school buses. They are cheap but less convenient than renting a car.
This is the large local market where you can buy a variety of groceries and goods. There are many stalls outside and inside selling all sorts of things.
This restaurant is where the iconic Rainbow Slide is. There was a long line for the slide, but it was worth it. I'm not sure how the food is since we only got drinks here.
This is a beautiful recreational area with large natural spring pools. One of the pools was closed for construction when we went. The water is cold but refreshing.

El Zonte/El Tunca Recommendations
Internet
Our Airbnb in El Zonte did not have the best internet connection for video calls. I'm not sure if this is normal for this area or not.
Transportation
We had a rental car while traveling along the coast. I don't think Uber is readily available in this area, but there are taxis.
This is a decent beach club to spend the day at. There's not a lot of comfortable seating, but there is a nice infinity pool to chill in. They offer horseback riding as a free activity included in the day pass, which is $20/pp. Service for food and drinks was kind of slow.
This is a cool dark-sand beach to chill at and watch surfers.

Santa Ana Recommendations
Internet
I did not work while I was in Santa Ana, so I'm not sure if the internet in most places is strong enough for remote working. However, there is wifi in most places. The wifi in our Airbnb was good enough for social media and streaming videos.
Transportation
We had a rental car, but Uber should be available in Santa Ana
This is an adventure park where you can do a wide range of affordable activities. We did some ziplining and bicycle ziplining. There's also a rainbow slide here.
