Are you looking for a laid-back beach town with a perfect blend of history, natural beauty, and a lively atmosphere?
Lagos, Portugal is a vibrant coastal town located in the stunning Algarve region and it's an excellent destination for first-time visitors.
My husband and I had a relaxing and enjoyable two weeks in the coastal town of Lagos, located in the southern Algarve region of Portugal. The city retains its Portuguese charm but is very much an international tourist town. English is widely spoken and a variety of cuisines available.
Check out this guide and enjoy the relaxing pace, delicious local seafood, coastal trails, and beaches in Lagos!

Travelers often ask, “Should I take a day trip from Porto and visit Aveiro”? And the answer is “YES!” It is like no other city in Portugal and on my list of top underrated cities on the peninsula. Aveiro is a city known for its canals, colorful boats, and Art Nouveau architecture. It is often referred to as the "Venice of Portugal" due to its network of canals and longboats or moliceiros. The city also has a strong tradition in ceramics, salt harvesting and tasty pastries as well as being located on the Atlantic coast, making it a popular destination for beachgoers. The beaches have a blue flag rating as well, which means the waters are rated as outstanding and pure. You might even like it enough to spend the night and give it another day of your trip.

We loved Lagos! Lagos felt like the perfect mix of authentic culture and also was touristy enough to keep us very entertained! It was wonderful to be able to walk to so many beaches, and hiking along the coast was one of our favorite things we did during this trip.
We loved the food and the kindness of all of the people we met. Even the streets in Lagos were creative and decorative.
The great thing about this area is that if you have a car you can access SO MUCH within an hour of Lagos. I will not list anything in this guide that is beyond an hour.
MOST things in this guide you can do entirely without a car, but I will list some things in which a car will be required. I will split the guide into two sections.. with and without car. Believe me there is PLENTY to do here either way!
This guide will include all of the things we did while in Lagos. It will include our favorite beaches, places to eat, and things to do. It will also include things I would LOVE to do if we had more time in this beautiful town!

Portugal is a captivating destination renowned for its unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. Visitors can explore medieval castles, ancient Roman ruins, and ornate palaces in historic cities like Lisbon and Porto, as well as the fairytale-like landscapes of Sintra.
Along the Atlantic coastline, stunning beaches, dramatic cliffs, and picturesque fishing villages await exploration, while inland regions offer opportunities for wine tasting in the Douro Valley and outdoor adventures in nature reserves like Parque Nacional da Peneda-Gerês. With its vibrant culture, delicious cuisine, and warm hospitality, Portugal offers travelers unforgettable experiences in every corner of the country.

I've always loved hotels. This is why I ended up studying hospitality at Les Roches International School of Hotel Management and working for Starwood, Kempinski and Mandarin Oriental.
I've been a Portugal specialist since 2019 and have lived in Lisbon since 2022. This means that I've had the opportunity to stay in and inspect some wonderful properties over the years.
Here I'm sharing a collection of some of my favorite hotels.
