It's hard to think of an Italian meal without thinking of a wine to enjoy it with, and the food and wine in Italy could arguably be two of the top reasons to travel there.
Pairing your meal with the perfect wine makes the dining experience that much more enjoyable so to take the guesswork out of what will pair best, the following is a brief guide to some of Italy's most renowned regional dishes, spanning from north to south, along with a few recommended wine pairings for each.
Whether you're dining at an Italian restaurant at home or exploring local eateries in Italy, this guide will help you avoid becoming overwhelmed by extensive wine lists if you are unsure what to look for.
In Italy, feel free to also ask the waiter or sommelier for recommendations on what to drink with your food. They are likely to suggest a wine from the region you are in, not only to help support local wine growers and producers, but also so you have the chance to experience the authentic flavors of the area through both the food and the wine.
⭐️PRO TIP - While dining out, if you plan to enjoy wine with your meal but haven't decided on what you will be eating yet, start with a glass of sparkling wine. This way, you'll have something to sip on while reviewing the food and wine menus and making your choice. Sparkling wine is an excellent palate cleanser to prep you for a savory meal, and Italy has some of the best.
Buon Apetito!

We begin in Venice before traveling to Florence, 3 Tuscany Cities and Wineries, and ending this dream getaway in Positano on the picturesque Amalfi Coast. Each day has been thoughtfully planned to give you the ultimate vacation.
Pro Tip: We travelled June/July, but you can opt for May/June or September/October for lower prices and less crowds while still enjoying nice weather. They will also harvest the grapes and olives around October. If traveling off-season, please note some recommendations may be closed for the season.

Fascinating places in Rome - a little bit of this, a little bit of that, mixing classics with some unpopular, hidden gems!
Where to eat/drink (including a bunch of beautiful rooftops), where to shop (outlets, bespoke & made in Italy - brands you rarely find outside this country) and what to visit around (gorgeous sights included, so be sure to check them out and take lots of pictures).
Highlights:
🛵 Vespa - is an Italian luxury brand of scooters and mopeds manufactured by Piaggio. The name means wasp in Italian. An Italian icon since 1946. You’ll see many of these all over the city.
🍕 Roman style Pizza - we encounter "pizza al taglio," which means "by the cut". The scizzas, which are a type of scissors, are used to cut this pizza into square-shaped slices. This helps to maintain the structure of both the toppings and the crust. There is also “pizza bassa”, with a thin base. Roman pizza is practically the opposite to Neapolitan pizza: it is crispy and they are not afraid of toppings. A classic on all menus in Rome is the Capricciosa: topped with ham, mushrooms, olives, artichoke, an egg and tomato. Oil is added to the dough and there is much less water than the Naples version.
🥯 The maritozzo - is a classic sweet pastry, traditionally packed full of whipped cream, which has satisfied Romans for centuries. The dough-based bun is typically eaten in Rome for breakfast but can also be eaten as a hefty snack, or dessert, throughout the day.
☕️ Ristretto - is Italian for "short shots", and that's exactly what this shot of espresso brings to the table. Its main difference is that it takes a shorter extraction time, and uses less water therefore the flavor is rich and bold, and very intense.
🍧 La Grattachecca Romana - a favourite icy drink with fruity flavor; for the Romans, the grattachecca is sacred - strictly prepared by hand in the historical kiosks of the Rioni Trastevere, Testaccio and Prati, in the lively Ponte Milvio area and Trieste and Trionfale districts. Grattachecca derives, in fact, from the action with which the “ghiacciata" (ice) is produced: with a special tool, the ice is scraped off a block, called the "checca" in Roman dialect.
🛍️ When it comes to shopping, Rome can be quite the haven for designer brands, but there is no other fashion house more Roman than Valentino Garavani. The brand’s design (its famous studs) has its origins in the Renaissance architecture of Rome - the “bugnato” technique of the ancient Roman buildings. The largest Valentino store (in the world) lies here, in Rome, on the famous Piazza di Spagna site.

Let's get one thing straight: Cheese is love, and while the French reign supreme in this kingdom! The Italians can hold their own pretty bloody well. Living in Italy, particularly in Bra- the proud home of Italy's ultimate cheese festival" Bra Cheese" - I have drowned myself in this cheesy paradise. This festival was founded by the slow food movement (which has its HQ right in Bra) it is a must for any cheese aficionado.
The following festivals, Pro-locos and Sarga' are generally put on by local communities and often coincide with the celebration of patron saints and similar holidays. There are plenty more than just these, but from my experience, these are worth your visit.
Now let's talk about the cream of the crop in the Italian cheese world. You cannot forget "the king" Reggiano Parmesan, a staple that deserves a permanent spot in your fridge. On the other end of the spectrum and country, there's Buffalo Mozzarella, a soft and slightly tart delight that screams summer. We cannot overlook Gorgonzola, with its range of mild and cream to bold and spicy. Crowd-pleasing favourite Ricotta and arguably the most versatile Italian cheese. A personal favourite, Taleggio, this northern Italian cheese especially when a little over ripe, is an unforgettable as a passionate date. Pecorino (the proper stuff - sheep's milk) deserves a mention - when it's good it's bloody fantastic!
Get out of the main Italian cities and experience these wonderful countryside areas and the produce and producers that make them, the next time you are in Italy.
"Blessed are the cheesemakers" indeed!

THE DAY-BY-DAY GUIDE TO A PERFECT WEEK IN ROME 🇮🇹
I've been fortunate enough to visit Rome multiple times and even more fortunate to have been guided by true Italian friends. Here I take all that I've learned from those travels and distill it into one perfect week.
This itinerary is great whether you've been to Rome before or are returning and hoping to explore some new spots. You'll visit classics like the Colosseum and the Vatican (where I still find something new to drop my jaw every time I go) as well as more underrated places that most tourists mistakenly skip in a rush to see other parts of Italy.
With that in mind, you'll notice this itinerary is a full 7 days. I see this as the minimum to truly see Rome. Many people only spend 2-3 days here, and I completely understand. Europe is expensive and you want to make the most of your trip. If that's you, this itinerary can still help - just pick your favorite days. Or, check out the 3-day itinerary I've created and linked below. But, I think you'll find that even a full 7 days barely scratches the surface of the Eternal City, and you'll be itching to come back to see (and eat) everything Rome has to offer!

Ischia (pronounced IS-KEE-A) is a small volcanic island in the Bay of Naples known for beautiful beaches and thermal spas. When tourists go to Capri, Italians go to Ischia! I recommend at least 2 nights in Naples
