Ischia, Campania, Italy🇮🇹
Ischia (pronounced IS-KEE-A) is a small volcanic island in the Bay of Naples known for beautiful beaches and thermal spas. While the tourist crowds head to Capri, the Italians go to Ischia. This island is actually larger than Capri and only a 1 hour ferry from Naples or Pozzuoli harbor (depending on the route and type of vessel).
We spent 2 nights in Ischia, coming from Naples in both August and September. Since the island economy relies heavily on tourism the best months to go are April-October, with many spas, shops and restaurants closing for the winter months. However, even in the stormier months like October and November, this island is stunning with the low lying fog hanging on the mountain tops.
Getting Here:
The best way to get to Ischia is by ferry from either Naples, Pozzuoli, or in the summer months Bacoli or Monte di Procida. If you don't have a car, the best departure will be from Naples as the ferry picks up from the Porto, which also has a metro and a bus stop nearby.
There are several ferry companies that operate boats in the area. To see all of their pricing and schedules in one place I recommend using Ferry Hopper.com or DirectFerry.com. In the high season you will likely not be allowed to bring a car, but when we went in September they allowed us even though the website said we shouldn't be. If you're concerned call ahead.
