We took the leap, booked a 2.5 month trip, and found ourselves enchanted by the country. From the very first time I boarded an Amtrak Long Distance (LD) train in 2016 in Oakland, CA, I was immediately overcome with excitement, which quickly morphed into a passion. I have yet to go on a trip and not catch myself in a trance staring out the window on multiple occasions, failing to read/watch all of the books/shows I thought I would need or having a deep conversation with a complete stranger in the observation car. These experiences are the reason why I write this guide, to share and hopefully inform prospective travelers. If you are not familiar with Amtrak’s LD services, fear not! I intend to offer as much information about the train options, destinations, schedules and anything else I can think of to lead your potential adventure. This is just part one of a three-part guide and will cover the intro as well as the first five long-distance trains (numerically). The Maritimes is a region of Eastern Canada that's often forgotten, but it's a huge mistake! It's in my opinion the most peaceful part of Canada, with countless quaint fishing villages living to the rhythm of the ocean, thousands of kilometers of coastline with some of the most unique sights, and of course rich in seafood. This guide covers 3 different provinces with my insights after spending over a month in the Maritimes guided by locals. Your budget has to take into consideration whether you move around the island with a driver or by renting motorbikes. Renting motorbikes allows for greater flexibility in exploring more places, which is particularly advantageous if your time on the island is limited. Cars can get stuck in traffic, wasting valuable time. If you choose to ride, ensure you wear helmets and carry your international driver's license to avoid fines. Here are three rules to ensure you enjoy your Bali trip to the fullest: 1. Always Bargain: Whether you're shopping at markets or hiring services, bargaining is a common practice in Bali. It's a fun way to engage with locals and often results in getting a better deal. 2. Looking for a perfect way to spend a long weekend in Maui, Hawai’i, check out this 3 and a half day itinerary to take the stress out of planning your ideal island vacation and leave the relaxing to you. This itinerary is made for adults ages 21+ in mind. When in Hawai’i, always remember to respect the locals, the rules, their culture and wildlife, leave places better than you found them, and practice the leave no trace principle. Remember, we are guests in their home. Out of respect and guidance, this guide does not include any stops or activities in West Maui. Our hearts go out to the grieving communities and local islanders who are still struggling to recover from the wildfires in early August 2023. Please do not go to Lahaina or take photos of the area. Whenever possible, shop, eat, and play by supporting local shops and groups.
